I thought this one would open up my stuffy nose a little with the spices and lovely aromatic scent.

It did not.

Instead the spices irritated my throat.

Made up a round of Stash bagged teas on, uhh, I think Wednesday? Wednesday and Thursday are kinda blurring together for me right now.

I wanted tea, but I didn’t have the strength to put in the effort to make nice, loose tea so lots and lots of bagged stuff. This one wasn’t really agreeing with me, though I normally adore it. It just sat funny on my tongue and left a weird sour taste in my mouth. During the sip it was nice creamy caramel, though…

Bleh.

So I had Wednesday/Thursday off but spent both days curled up in bed (my couch) highly drugged up, coughing up phlegm and finishing season two of GOT in between long, extended naps. I drank a lot of this; my “justification” being that it was great for staying hydrated. That was probably true…

Tre also got back from Regina on Wednesday (well technically late Tuesday night), sadly with no tea! Wah wah wah. I don’t blame him though; Regina was super flooded while he was down there, and I don’t think Cuppa’T was easily accessible to him, especially with the flooding. Definitely disappointing though.

What did he bring back? Three huge Plexiglas light sabers that he forgot to bring up when we initially moved over half a year ago. What has he been doing with those light sabers? Having light saber duels late at night in the living room, with just himself. Yeah, he’s fighting imaginary opponents…

My roommate is a dork.

I am sad about the no tea but happy you must be coming up to the really awesome scene in GoT season 3 :)

Still need to start season three, may do that tomorrow since I get off work early…

Sipdown (153/160)!

So I cold brewed the last little bit because I’d enjoyed it more cold brewed than hot but I had a lot of problems with this particular cold brewed batch; it tasted sorta medicinal (maybe just because I’m sick – but I think not) and was very thin flavour wise.

But really, my biggest problem with this particular cold brew was that I was drinking it alongside a hot thermos of Cherry NeoCitron at work and the NeoCitron tasted significantly better/more flavourful. That’s just not right…

So I’m done with this one. I played around, but overall I just don’t like it so there’s no need to pick up anymore. It’s not what the name promises and that’s a sugary sweet, flavourful candy cherry flavour. Nope.

Cold shaken in icy water to help with breathing when I was at my stuffiest. It did the trick a little bit, but not nearly as well as I was hoping. I’m going to blame that on myself though; I’m quite sure I improperly measured out the matcha I wanted to use.

So like I pretty much just noted with this one, I drank it a lot this weak because it’s an awesome sick tea; but I’m making special note of this particular timolino full because it tasted quite significantly different than the other cups I enjoyed this week.

I made it in a timolino and I’m not sure if it was because of how it was prepared or just because I was at my “peak sickness” but it tasted thin, watery, weak a little metallic. Definitely the worst cup I’ve had of this one in a long time; but definitely an outlier to the other cups I’ve had recently.

Cold Brew!

Here are my jotted down notes for this one:

- Smooth, thick mouthfeel
- Refreshing on my stressed/swollen throat
- This particular batch was more coconut than pineapple
- A little candy sweet

Finally feel like I’m making a bit of a dent in my tin of this one. Thankfully I’m still loving it though! It too makes a good sick tea; mostly ‘cause of the licorice root. It’s sweet and indulgent and definitely something nice to cradle and feel the heat from.

This cup in particular was lots of chocolate and not so much “nut”. Still good though.

Flavors: Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Licorice

This is always one of those teas that I think “Man, I should just sip it all down and move on” about, but then I get sick and it becomes a major tea crutch for me. Seriously, it’s one hell of a great sick tea.

It just really relaxes and soothes the throat, and it makes you get all sleepy and stuff. Just lots of good stuff jumbled all together in it like chamomile, licorice root, peppermint, and goji berries. And on top of everything it’s sweet enough to still be flavourful when you’re sick and hopped up on medication and can’t taste shit all.

So I don’t know. I’ve made a pretty good dent in the tin this week; still not close to a sipdown though. I think it’s one of those things I just kinda need to have around though in at least a small quantity because it’s a really affordable sick tea.

Hot brewed cup Sunday evening. It looked like very crystal clear blood. Smelled slightly better than blood…

These are the notes I jotted down (because fuck writing long things when you’re sick):

- Very tart blood/beet like flavour initially with more mellow “cherry koolaid” type middle flavour
- Lemon grass very present
- A few odd sips were medicinal
- CB is better

I’m really feeling like this is something I could only enjoy with sweetener and I just don’t want to have to rely on that to make my tea good! Bumping the rating down.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
