Sipdown (112)!

Still a pretty average straight black tea in my humble opinion. Fruits notes were consistent, but there was a lot more maltiness in this timolino worth of tea. I prepared it the same way though, so who knows.

The day I drank this I was incredibly stressed out at work though. Just one of the most stressful shifts I have ever had. Not just at Dollarama – but at any place I’ve worked in general. I felt like my head was gonna blow up at the end of my shift. Ughhhh….

So, Tre and I went out for supper afterwards to kinda relax and “wind down”. We eat out/order in too much. Food was tasty though. I “snuck” this into the restaurant and drank it with my meal. And by snuck, I asked really nicely if they’d mind if I drank my own tea. The staff is very nice (and maybe could tell how much of a mess I was) and said it was totally fine…

I gave ’em a really big tip because they were so awesome.

The last Hobbit Tea to try cold brewed!

I’m remembering when I was at Robyn’s place and we watched both the Hobbit movies and her roommates severely judged me when I found sick, on his last limb, dying Kili to be the sexiest thing ever. Hot damn; take me now Kili, if you have the strength to do so. I mean, even though you’re looking fine you’re not really looking so fine, you know?

But anyway; that’s definitely not really super relevant to the tea so…

WHY IS THIS SO GINGER HEAVY? It makes me really, really sad because the ginger was basically all I could taste overtop a mediocre black base with maybe a tiny faint presence of vanilla. I mean, actually it was ok but definitely not anything more than that. And I am fearful of the hot cup. I don’t see the hot cup being any kind of improvement on this one.

So basically, nope.

I recommended Kili, but not Kili inspired tea.

Cameron B.

Sounds like all of the Hobbit teas are spice-themed… :(

Cameron B.

P.S. – I find Fili way more attractive than Kili!

Basically all of them but Party King…

drank Nestea by Nestle

I ordered pizza; it came with this. I drank this. It was ok. So that.

Side Topic: Anyone on Steepster watching Utopia? Tre and I have added it into the growing list of TV shows we’re watching together and we’re really liking it! Although, we’re strongly opinionated and watching it definitely means lots and lots of yelling at the computer screen. Bella makes me so angry/pisses me off so much.

Anyone watching Gotham? Should I be watching it? Tre is and he likes it a lot, but I’m not a huge DC fan. Still, if it’s well done…

Kaylee

I just finished the newest episode of Gotham! It’s a really great show. I confess bias because I love me some classic DC superheroes, but I genuinely believe it’s an independently good drama. And for what it’s worth, Gotham is more of an origin stories show so there’s not really any capes or gadgets.

Sipdown impending (may finish it off tonight).

Made in my timolino; very juicy orange and sweet pistachio heavy complimented by lighter notes of almond and a very faint “spice” present in the end of the sip in the back of your throat. Like a little “tickle”. Mmm!

Mental note to myself: I should eat more pistachio stuff!

Also, dropping this link here for future reference so I can pull it up again for Starfevre when she’s not on her work computer. I totally recommend watching this music video if gore/sex stuff doesn’t make you really uncomfortable! It’s a really interesting, albeit mildly mentally scaring, video.

Yum, pistachio orange!

Starfevre

oh good, linked here forever for posterity.

Dude someone from work showed me this video weeks ago and when it starts he looks at me and goes “I swear I am not a perv” and then it continues and he is like “no really, I swear I am not a perv…this is a well known video” and it just kept getting worse and he just kept protesting he wasn’t a perv. I am glad to know his is actually a thing.

Roswell Strange

You can rest easy; your coworker probably isn’t a perv. Probably.

Starfevre

hahaha. Now I really want to watch it and I’m at work again. I need to not be exhausted and fall right into bed when I get home.

Cold Brew!

Even though this is definitely a Chai, I was excited when I opened up the tin because there are lots and lots of visible cloves in the dry leaf. I love cloves! And thankfully, the taste was also very clove heavy. Enough to mask any other unwanted spice flavour! It was also kinda neat experiencing cloves cold – I typically only have them in hot tea. Holla!

I also got a bit of fruity sweetness – the apple I suppose. I’m interested to see how this fares hot. Not a half bad blend.

Also; Steepster chat has entered a very dark place friends. I pulled up the page for 52Tea’s Dreamscile Pu’Erh to do a comparison and that opened a scary can of worms since everyone was reminded of The Hot Pocket Vine.

This has now led into a probably really bad direction and Starfevre is now attempting to find internet content to traumatize me. So far I’ve explored “Goatse” (meh) – but that has led to me typing out the phrase “Obama is gazing into the butthole”. That’s something I can honestly say I never expected to say ever.

So, umm, caution? Steepster chat may be going to a very dark place tonight.

I promise to make my next note for this one more normal.

Flavors: Cloves

Starfevre

you missed it earlier when we were discussing dead Russian Sex Geckos.

Roswell Strange

I am sad I missed that conversation.

Went out this morning/early afternoon which is why my queue continuation is coming a little later in the day – but not a lot to get through!

I think this was from VariaTEA but honestly I don’t remember. Woops. Anyway this was nice but not really in an especially remarkable way; I think in the long run it’s gonna be a forgettable blend. But anyway; in my timolino. Most note worthy thing for this one was the strong fruity notes and light nuttiness. Reminded me a little of the fruity/marzipan aspect of almonds.

Cameron B.

Yum. I want to try all of the TTC teas! :P

I sent this to you but it originated from Sil

Cold Brew!

This one was pretty popular on Steepster for a while back when it used the old formulation (with Sweet Potato instead of Pumpkin Spice). Or at least it feels that way to me; I remember seeing a lot of notes on this in very close proximity a while ago. I’d have loved to have tried the Sweet Potato pie version back when it was making rounds – still, this one smells really good dry. Better than I thought it would, so I was still pumped to get to try it how it is now.

It actually was surprisingly good! Maybe actually the best Hobbit tea so far? It was a little tough breaking things down individually but as a whole this gave off a very “Pumpkin Pie” sort of vibe, complete with the pie crust! I look forward to seeing how it turns out hot, but if all fails I can just finish it off cold brewed! Tis the season for Pumpkin Tea, right?

Relating to the character though; not sure how I feel about the flavour choices. I get why they were picked out, but I just feel like better choices maybe could have been made? I think this should maybe have been sweeter? I don’t know though. I’m no expert.

Terri HarpLady

It’s been awhile since I had this one, but I really loved it :)

Mixed 50/50 with Tiramisu matcha. Was a pretty tasty, although more Tiramisu dominant, cup. You can read more on that here:

Cheri

That sounds like a good combination

Wow, shocker. Tre just introduced me to a new song, and I actually like it. That pretty well never happens. Ever.

But yeah; I made a large mug of this mixed 50/50 with Cheesecake Matcha. I like both of them straight, but some part of me has felt like that each one on its own is a little bit lacking so maybe together they’ll bring out the best in one another?

I’m doing the majority of the writing in this note because of the two matcha flavours this was by far the dominant one; the coffee and cake-yness of it was undeniable and then enhanced with a 50/50 split of cheesecake creaminess and chocolate.

I drank this nice mix up while eating a huge stack of fluffy pancakes covered in Saskatoon Berry syrup. Tasty as fuck! Perfect midnight supper. Tre was very jealous, which means I did something right.

Fjellrev

I love having breakfast for supper. Do you think Cheesecake matcha is worth trying?

Roswell Strange

I do think it’s worth giving a shot! If you want I could send you a sample? I have lots :)

drank Bravissimo by DAVIDsTEA

Tre was really sick so I made him some tea; this tea! It’s a good sick tea.

He asked me to put two sugars in it, and I totally forgot (because I never add sugar to tea for anyone but him) but when I gave it to him he ended up being way too sick to even taste the tea itself at all so he couldn’t tell the difference at all. He’s feeling much better now though.

I only have one more cup worth left though so I moved it out of the tin so I can fill it with Mulberry Magic. I’ve gone through so much of this one. Sipdown impending.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
