drank Boston by Harney & Sons

- Strong cranberry and vanilla flavour with lighter almond notes
- Sweet and silky
- I think a soda is the next direction for this one

I couldn’t pull this one up with the search bar; had to look in my cuboard for it. Boo.

Ew.

Tre brought his FWB home, again (like the sixth day in a row) – and how he’s showering while she sits in his room and eats my Halloween candy. Why.

But yeah; this was a cold brew and it too, just like my most recent hot cup, was all raspberries and cream. Gonna have to try adding milk next time to see if that makes it richer. I think it would…

drank Pumpkin Patch by DAVIDsTEA

Cold Brew. The last one from my “sample spree” to try.

- Strong molasses/pumpkin notes
- Black base pretty present
- Not much fruit; tastes familiar though?
- “Cakey”?

I wish I could taste the fruit more strongly; I really love both currants and pineapple but neither were distinct to me at all. For something with subtle molasses in it, I sure did pick it up quite a bit…

Sipdown (110)!

Firstly, I’m dying right now. I opened up Tumblr and this was the first thing on my dashboard. http://kraftworkorange.tumblr.com/post/100112444150

I spat out my cold brew I was laughing so hard. But this tea…

This one I spat out for a far different reason. After really hating the cold brew, I decided to try it hot – but still didn’t have high expectations at all. Cold just seemed like a naturally good route and since that was a fail, hot being good was a bleak outcome.

When I took my first sip, the two words that came immediately to mind were rancid and vomit. To me, this is just nasty, unsweetened and extremely tart hibiscus/orange and then mud. And not good mud. Like, filthy smelly mud.

I got down a few sips but then had to give up and really thoroughly clean out my timolino to purge the smell/scent. And I feel guilty, because I definitely passed on the rest of my sample to some poor unfortunate tea drinker instead of throwing it out like my gut told me to.

However, the fact I have read a few good reviews on this makes me feel a little less terrible for passing my sample along to someone else.

Very weird. Mine was actually quite pleasant, and as I mentioned, it tasted like black tea, not pu’erh (which I did see are the first two ingredients, in that order, so it makes sense). Bad batch of pu’erh, maybe? Or too much hibby.

Roswell Strange

Perhaps too much hobby; lots of visible hibby and orange in the sample I had.

drank Pear Tea by Fauchon
15662 tasting notes

Made in my timolino for work, but I drank it at home because I didn’t have the chance at work.

When I got home I discovered that my internet was inexplicably down and despite all my trouble shooting I couldn’t get it to work (and it was like eleven at night so calling our provider wasn’t an option – sometimes a nocturnal schedule has downfalls). So instead I made a nice, cooked meal instead of eating cereal for supper, and I watched the Degrassi movie (all those nostalgic feels) since I bought the DVD from work a few days ago.

We got a whole bunch of Degrassi stuff in; but from the older seasons with JT, Paige, Marco, Spinner, Ellie, you know – the old gang. From before Drake was Drake. I don’t think Dollarama realizes it’s 2014.

The tea was good, though the spices from my Hamburger Helper contributed to some of the subtle nuances of this delicately scented tea being lost/buried. It wasn’t a well thought out food pairing.

I am the master of poor food-tea planning. “Why not have some SUPER garlicky salad for supper? And some tea… which I can’t taste at all because my mouth tastes like GARLIC.” (First world problems…)

Cold Brew.

This was my zen during a terribly work day. We had two of our main employees quit within the same wee; Ruby (one of our main stockers) and Billi (our main cashier) because they were being treated disrespectfully by our manager Carole. That left us cripplingly understaffed (and led to my 50 hour work week). I had stress headaches every day, for hours at a time. We’ve now hired like seven more people though; so we’re well staffed now. All is good.

This cold brew was very coconut/banana/pineapple strong. Actually, this is the first time I personally tasted the pineapple, which others have described experiencing. And I really appreciated the flavour contribution. I do love me some pineapple.

Sipdown (111)!

I sure am glad I’m making good sipdown progress, ’cause I still have a swap with Marzipan and my Secret Pumpkin on the way still, as well as a probably huge package from VariaTEA and I think TeaAve Oolong samples (anyone heard whether these have shipped?)…

So to finish off my 20g sample of this one, I turned it into tea syrup using a Simple Syrup recipe, and then I floated it in club soda to make a tea soda – which I enjoyed sipping on while getting ready for work in the morning.

- Decided to try this one because the CB reminded me of gingerale
- Very sweet; actually relatively gingerale like
- Pear very supple, fresh and “breezy”
- I definitely want to restock this one

So next time I free up a tin this is what’s going to be filling it.

Tealizzy

I was wondering about the TeaAve samples too. Haven’t heard anything. Hopefully it’s not like the Par Avion incident.

Raspberries and Cream; perfect thing for satisfying a sweet tooth. Working towards a sipdown on this one, now – and I think if I did finish it off I’ll officially not have anymore 52Teas in my cupboard? Might have the change that.

EDIT: I’m a liar – I’ll still have Marshmallow Treat.

Sipdown (112)!

- Oversteeped
- I am shocked, but I’m actually picking up the cinnamon notes in this!
- I also get a weird vegetal note; my gut says Squash but my head says no
- Cream/Hay
- Thick mouthfeel
- Weird, but ultimately really good

Thanks again 221Tea and Brian!

Cold Brew.

Strong Acai/Juniper flavour followed by very vivid pine notes. Base mostly covered by the fruit. Super refreshing.

One Night In Bangkok just started playing on the radio; I’ve had it stuck in my head ALL week and this doesn’t help.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
