Cold Brew!

This is very, very nearly a sipdown and that makes me incredibly sad. I still can’t believe DT discontinued this one; it was a very unique blend! I have to wonder what the reason was, because based on conversations with friends who work at DAVIDsTEA it was pretty popular. Maybe the mulberries became too expensive to source? Or complaints about the weight? Though DT still carries quite a few very heavy blends…

The cold brew was all smooth, sweet and rich coconut and mulberry though. In a way, the flavour does remind me of drinking liquid gold. It’s so unique; only one other tea has ever come close to touching on it, in my opinion. And that’s be RiverTea’s Mulberry White which you can no longer buy because RiverTea has shut down…

Tea friends help; I’m in desperate need of a replacement for this tea! What other companies carry mulberry teas!?

Evol Ving Ness

Hmm. Why not buy mulberries by weight at a Persian shop and make your own?

rosebudmelissa

I have some dried mulberries from Nuts.com, I should try them as a tea…

Kristal

I think they discontinued this one because of the hard to source mulberry. They got rid of Mulberry Magic as well :( luckily my local tea shop sells mulberry leaves straight up so I’m not too sad. I hope you can find a substitute!

VariaTEA

I still have like 50g but its very old. Nonetheless, I can always share.

DenverTeaHound

I snagged a package of this discontinued blend as well; excited to cold brew it after your review!

Delicious, delicous summer cold brew!

That said I may need to start hoarding ‘cause I was browsing Camellia Sinensis’ website and making super expensive dream carts and I was shocked to see that it wasn’t listed on the site anymore! WHAT!?

In other news, I almost wound up not getting to drink this! Typically, I drink my cold brews out of a carry mug at work because it’s nice having something cold and refreshing at work during the day. My carry mug is one of the orange/mango ones from DAVIDsTEA and turns out that a coworker just bought the exact same one. We found out because we both brought ours to work this week, and accidentally switched mugs at some point during the day.

We figured it out, though. I foresee this being a bit annoying in the future, though.

EDIT: Just went to check out the CS site again, and this is back up on the site. I can breath a big sigh of relief.

VariaTEA

Any chance Des Roses et Des Bonbons has made a surprise appearance as well? My guess is no, it hasn’t but luckily mine has held up with age

VariaTEA

Also, what was in your coworkers mug? This could benefit you if you play it right. Just put the meh teas you don’t really care for in yours and hope they have something better :P

Roswell Strange

Didn’t actually drink hers, but cracked it open by mistake – some kind of tart hibiscusy thing? Also no Des Roses et Des Bonbons, which is sad.

VariaTEA

Oh, that’s no good then. So much for my plan.

Sipdown (137)!

Commute tea!

Even though it’s summer now, this amalgamation of typically Autumn flavours was amazing. You have pumpkin, cinnamon, clove, ginger, molasses, brown sugar, and sweet potato notes that together just create the most decadent pumpkin pie flavour.

It’s definitely not the right season for this right now, but I’m going to have to remember this tea for the fall and winter – especially ‘cause DAVIDsTEA’s super popular Pumpkin Chai just never quite did it for me. This is DEFINITELY better.

Thank you Scheherazade!

Cold Brew!

Lots of gooseberries in this one, like three or four? I think pretty well all of the ones from this latest sample bag wound up in this specific brew. The result was a brew where the citrus notes just dominated the spearmint.

It was pretty good; and eating the gooseberries afterwards was the best.

Fjellrev

Drool, gooseberries. I wish they’d make a blend without all kinds of other distracting notes.

Cold Brew Sipdown (138)!

Thank you Scheherazade! I was really excited when I saw this one in your swap package because I’ve had it before (I think from you, actually?) and I quite enjoyed it so revisiting was very nice. I wont go in depth; this tasted exactly like I remembered it from last time. So, suffice to say, I was not disappointed.

Another from Scheherazade! I remember reading one of her tasting notes and thinking that since sounded like it should be quite good even though she’d expressed disappoint towards it.

Personally, I started by cold brewing this because LiberTEAS talks about icing it. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t what I was wanting either. While I would have enjoyed something more plummy or with cherry notes to it, I found that this was more of a peach/nectarine sort of flavour without any other stonefruit notes coming through other than those ones. And I think I see what Scheherazade meant when she described this as “dusty”. It’s a shame I don’t taste the plum or cherry because, skimming through other reviews, a lot of people did get those flavours. I’m just not one of them.

Still have enough leaf left for a hot cup, so I’m hoping I’ll get a better range of stonefruit flavours from that one.

drank Cherry Bakewell by Twinings

Sipdown (139)!

Thank you for the sample Scheherazade!

Not entirely sure what a “bakewell” is? Based on the flavour, I’m definitely thinking some sort of pastry? Anywho, I drank this one as a commute tea on the way to work; from the moment I opened up the teabag wrapper this smelled really surprisingly amazing! Cherry pie filling, essentially…

Tasting Notes:
- "Cherry Filling/7-11 Cherry Pastry flavour
- Also a bit of a pudding/custard taste?
- Oddly makes me think of Banana Cream Pie
- Vegetal finish
- Weirdly satisfying?

The banana notes perplexed me quite a lot; not so sure where that was coming from at all. But overall I was delightfully surprised by this one. I’d totally drink it again.

Flavors: Cherry, Overripe Cherries, Pastries

Well, this was better than that cup that made me feel super nauseous when I was feeling sick: however something about it still didn’t taste quite right to me either and I can’t exactly place what it is. The taste wasn’t bad: cinnamon and bright peach with a playful tartness from the rosehips. It should have been good but peach is one of those flavours that is so hit and miss for me. Some of my worst tea drinking experiences have involved peach flavoured teas; and when I think back on them I instantly just don’t feel quite right. Stomach gurglies, and all that jazz…

So I think that because I now have that strong mental connection to when I drank this while feeling sick and it making me feel so gross afterwards that I may have dug that slippery slope of peach flavour an even deeper hole. I may be in a place now where, regardless of the cuppa itself, I just associate this tea and it’s flavour with the feeling of sickness…

Well, it’s pretty well summer time and what does that mean? Barbecues and beverages! Sometimes the bevvies are tea, sometimes they’re alcohol, and sometimes they’re both! We had a “roommate” BBQ last week and I made iced tea “cocktails” for everyone using Brisk as the base.

1 oz of vodka
1 oz of Peach Schnapps
And then the rest of the glass filled with Brisk…

They were quite good! Better than Brisk on its own, actually. The peach schnapps really made it quite delicious. It was like some sort of iced tea peach candy? Fuzzy Peaches with out the tartness, perhaps? Perfectly appropriate for the first BBQ of the summer though!

Also, Happy Mother’s Day Steepster Mommies!

This is a queued tasting note.

Picked this one out as my commute tea on Monday ’cause I was craving something sweet as well as a black tea and I thought that this would be bright enough to jump start my day/afternoon. The grenadine was delicious and really hit the spot, but the black tea came off as brisk and very tannic. It actually had enough astringency that while the taste was there the mouthfeel was very unpleasant and distracting.

Hmmm…

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
