1719 Tasting Notes
So all week the TV weather people have been preparing us for a major winter storm. Last night they cancelled church so no one would get hurt. I got up this morning and its in the low 30’s and raining. Raining? Apparently north of us will still get pounded but the bulk of the white stuff skirted around us. However, that is only part of the story.
Tonight the temperature is supposed to plummet and the wind pick up resulting in some of the coldest weather in 30 years: -50 F windchills. I remember last time. Our power went out and with the ice we had to stay put. We (me, wife, 2 kids, dog, couple cats, and a bird) all huddled in our bedroom and stayed safe. I am quietly hoping the weather folk miss the mark on the plus side on this as well… and the power stays on.
In acceptance, defiance, or whatever, I am having a toasted English muffin with blackberry jam, and mug of Earl Grey hot while I watch the rain. Kudos to Twinings for a string long enough to wrap around the cup handle. I hate it when the tag gets sucked under. For those who are in the storms path – stay safe.
Yesterday I had a mind blowing Yunnan black. So today I am having this equally amazing Fujian black. I scrolled through my older reviews of this and they seem to bounce all over the place. So continuing the trend… I could swear I smelled grape as I took my first sip. Then I was hit with a brief moment of pepper on the sides of the tongue. The cup then settled into grain, honey, and malt. So very good. Must re-steep.
I have three main decaf bagged ‘teas’ in my nightly rotation along with 6 or 8 other less frequent. This may well be my favorite. Last night I could almost feel the cookie crumbs dissolve on my lips. The orange rind is subtle but gives a nice depth. Needs sweetened for full affect.
Remember RiverTea’s contest “What would you do for the last 100 g of your favorite tea on earth?” Well, this is the last of my prize winning samples to try and Yunnan blacks are one of my three most favorite teas. The other two being Fujian black, and Earl Grey.
With Golden Tips and Golden Monkey being two of my highest rated teas, I wasn’t sure how this would stack up against the competition. When I inhaled the aroma of the first cup I literally went, “Whoa!” Then I sipped it and was just as impressed. This has more than a casual amount of sweet smoke. Not LS level smoke. More of a Keemun level but unmistakably smoky none-the-less. It is accompanied by honey and light malt. Beneath it lies woodsy/nutty tinged cocoa.
This is seriously good. I haven’t given a rating to a new tea in a while but I will this one. Bravo!
Preparation
My first experience with Shou Mei. The leaf looks like the picture and is interesting to look at and festive in aroma. I am not a particular fan of chai – which strangely is exactly why I chose this one. This is not any of the things I dislike in chai. It is not overwhelmingly spiced. The pepper is held down to a very mild level. Though the list of ingredients is long, they all make sense. (Are you listening Yogi and Stash?) In the taste it is clove and cardamom. Originally I thought ginger and cinnamon, which are also present. I don’t taste lemongrass or vanilla but assume they are filling in the flavors of the cup.
This reminds me of Mystic Chai, which is a powdered chai mix I used to buy at Sam’s Club. I liked it but it was pre-sweetened, which meant three times too sweet for human consumption. This is not sweetened so I get to control how sweet I want it. What a novel idea!
For chai, I like this one.
Feeling super lazy today. This is the only tea I have steeped. Trying to decide if I have the ambition to refill the pot. Did I mention I’m feeling lazy?
Yes, yes, that’s all good and well, but how is Captain Jebediah’s successor coming along? We must consider his legacy.
Ha ha, well I guess the good news is everyone survived. The bad news is the next generation prototype craft exploded on the launch pad. The credentials of our engineers are currently under review.
I’m not English and it is not breakfast. I’m a mad man! Even so, I was pleasantly surprised by this. I always (and apparently wrongly) associate EB with extremely strong, brisk, bitter, and often harsh. Generally I consider EB near the bottom of my tea preferences. This is the bagged version so it is a little less flavorful than it might otherwise be but I enjoyed it. Smooth, malty, and fruity. The only negative, if it offends you, is it is a tad drying. I used sweetener. I seldom use milk – that might cover the dryness. Anyway, way better than I remember.
This is very tasty. The almond and coconut just seem made for each other. This is a year old and I was a little concerned as someone here on Steepster said coconut can turn rancid after a while. I guess my storage was sufficient as this is still very fresh. I do notice the sencha base today which is something I missed previously. All in all a good cup of summer… I can dream.
In other news, sadly I marooned three Kerbal astronauts in orbit around Mun (Kerbal’s moon) yesterday. I ran out of fuel before escape velocity was reached. They will be missed but another launch is scheduled for minutes from now. Jebediah, Captain of the Orbitor 2 would want it that way. If only we had installed a docking port we might have been able to launch a rescue mission.
Meeka I am obviously not good at it yet (ask Jebediah) but it’s great fun. I do wish there were better instructions.
Yeah, the tutorials are pretty lacking – I found some YouTube tutorials that helped but I still haven’t gotten into orbit yet (although that might be user error at this point :P).
Today I over leafed a little (for me), used water at about 175 F and steeped was about 2 minutes. Prepared this was I have to agree with Tea Sipper – creamed corn. I was trying to find the words when I read his review and yes, creamed corn.
Cooler water temp made for a more green vegetal aroma. While the color was green until it cooled slightly then it turned amber. That always seems weird.
I always enjoy white monkey and this is a good one.
I hope your power stays on! Stay warm and safe!
Praying for all connections to stay connected.
Fingers crossed! I spent one of the worst Swedish winters of the past decade in my house in the country. Power failures at least once a week, the water froze almost daily… ugh. I remember being all alone (this is in the middle of the forest) in the pitch black night, -30 C, or something, and then having to crawl in under the house to thaw the water pipes with my blowdryer because the hot air gun had been misplaced.
(I still have that blowdryer, by the way, and it still saves me on a daily basis, albeit in other ways.)
I promise this is not one of those cheery, ‘Oh, it could be worse!’ comments, but I’m just so thrilled to be in Rome at the moment. I actually got a mosquito bite last night, that’s how balmy it is.
Thanks all. Steepster is giving me fits today. Just got my notices for the last 6 hours.
Anna, -30 C, that is a night on the ice planet Hoth. Protect that hairdryer, or I guess you could find a Tauntaun.
I had to google tauntaun!
(And planet Hoth.)
Oops, my nerd is showing. I watched a Mythbusters special last night and they were doing Star Wars.
No, I’m faulty – I’ve never seen any SW. It’s part of a basic movie education, after all!
You must be almost the last remaining person to not see any of them. (one in a million lol) If you are ever so inclined start with the original – Episode IV A New Hope. Avoid The Phantom Menace unless or until you are a fan or you will likely not watch another.
No, thank you for your kind guidance, but they seriously bore me to death. If I want to fall asleep instantly, it’s either SW or The English Patient. I can’t explain it.
