Thanks SO much to Raritea and Indigobloom for picking up 50g of this for me in Toronto! In retrospect I perhaps should have requested 100g, but at least 50 will hold me for a bit :D

Put this in the travel mug this morning (which was the reason for purchasing it), and oh man, so yummy. Caramelly and orangey. Drank the whole thing during my morning meeting, as I was up early enough to make teas and let them cool enough on the counter to drink prior to putting them in my mugs. Delish.

Yum. Had this in lieu of coffee with a friend today, and no regrets at all. Part of me wanted a sinfully delicious coffee drink, but my stomach started hurting at the mere thought, so I went with a matcha latte as I had planned. I don’t really remember how it was, except that I enjoyed it :D

And now for the saddest sipdown in the history of sipdowns :( :( :(

Finished this one off today, and possibly the saddest part is that… I actually didn’t even drink any! It’s still in the mug, so I’ll get to it tomorrow (just had a bit now), but yeah. I’ll probably get one small re-steep out of the leaves, and that will be it. Time to sort through my stash and find more tasty flavoured blacks to take in travel mugs. Luckily many of my Della Terra samples qualify, but they’re mostly pretty small so I can only get 1-2 cup’s worth out of them… rambles

I liked this one too, and never did spring for another pouch of it. I hope it is able to be reblended at some point – I would love to revisit it again!

I want more…. :(

Sipdown :( This was a pretty tasty sample, though! I’m quickly working my way through all my milk oolongs in preparation for buying more. Who cares if they are expensive; milk oolong seems to be an absolute travel mug staple for me. I think I’m down to a single serving of DT’s Quangzhou Milk Oolong, a single serving of Bon The Place’s version, one packet from Teavivre of the unflavoured version, and a couple random cups’ worth of stuff from Mercuryhime and… whoever sent me a bagged version to try. You know you have an addiction to spending money when the prospect of it is so very, very appealing…

i probably have more of that one you had a sample of….

Kittenna

This one??

Kittenna

Oh, the Pekko one? Right – I have a serving of that left too :D If you are trying to get rid of milk oolong, I am a willing recipient.

Sil

it’s in my “trade” box. I feel like i should add another user to the steepster database with the name Sils Trade and then that cupobard could be me swap cupboard lol

Kittenna

I think you should list the contents of your trade box on our spreadsheet :D That’s kind of what I’m trying to do on the “up for grabs” page.

Sil

Lol I will eventually. You guys cleaned out most of it though, thankfully, until I get a chance to go through more of my tea

drank Peach Oolong by Butiki Teas

So I remembered that I had this tea…. and hadn’t the faintest idea what it even tasted like. In fact, I wasn’t even sure that I had ever tried it! I see that yes, I did, and I also see why it didn’t ring a bell – there just wasn’t a whole ton of flavour, sadly. Even with an accidental extra minute of infusion, I’m tasting what’s almost coming off as a milk oolong, with perhaps the barest hint of peach. Certainly not bad, but not as tasty as I wanted when I purchased it.

Oh well – it looks like there’s not a ton left in my bag anyhow, so perhaps I sent off a serving or two to someone at some point.

drank Pistachio Ice Cream by Butiki Teas

Managed to oversteep this one this morning (just by 30 seconds), but thankfully it doesn’t appear to be ruined. I’m having the same lack-of-creaminess problem as with the Eggnog, which I’m positive is again related to the creamy, sweetened tea I just drank. I’m also getting a slight note of anise, which is throwing me a bit. Blehhh!! (It’s still good though.)

Felt like a treat this morning, so brewed this one up. Since I’ve just had a tea with strong vanilla flavouring, it’s not as tasty as usual, but I’m getting the flavour of the green base, which is still quite nice. This is really a tea to enjoy by itself to maximize flavour.

drank Cafe Vanilla by Della Terra Teas

Sadly, this tea didn’t taste as good as it smelled :( It’s all delicious vanilla, but the flavour was flat to me, and just didn’t work. I threw in some brown sugar and that improved it, but there was still a bit of a strange flat flavour to the cup that I wasn’t fond of. Perhaps I’ll like it better the next time I try it!

Good to know. I almost ordered some of that, but it wasn’t available in the 1oz size.

Not bad! Got this in my box from LiberTeas, and figured that I had enough of it to give it a shot in the travel mug and still have enough left over to try normally.

Although unlike some other chocolate orange teas, this one doesn’t really smell like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange, it really wasn’t bad! A bit astringent even with a short infusion (I think I’d drop it another 30s next time), but I can taste the orange, and a kind of chocolate creaminess. One bonus is the total lack of fishy pu’erh flavour, though!!

Thanks, LiberTeas!

Have you tried Davidstea Chocolate Orange? Just curious :)

Kittenna

Yep! That was where the fish pu’erh comment came from, haha. Loved the flavouring, but not so keen on the base.

ohfancythat

Yeah, if not for the fact that the chocolate and orange kind of hides the pu’erh taste I probably wouldn’t be a fan! I found their Creme de Menthe worse because it wasn’t hidden at all. I will have to seek out a good pu’erh sometime! Any recommendations? I’ve only ever had Davidstea’s!

Kittenna

I found Creme de Menthe to be better, hahaha. I think it depends highly on the batches, sometimes. In terms of pu’erhs, Verdant is usually a good source for them, and I’ve heard good things about Mandala. I’d recommend a sheng over a shu pu’erh to start, but I’m really just a newbie myself too :)

Brewed this up for a travel mug, and so it’s been sitting in there for about 2 days (yeah, I have bad tea hygiene… but I haven’t been sick yet, so whatevs). Anyhow, I think this one only improved with sitting! I’m actually enjoying it now. Still way prefer the non-upgraded version though.

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
