Backlog. I went to a cute cafe to yesterday to meet up with a friend and get some work done. While they are known for coffee, they had a nice selection of Mighty Leaf teas. I’ve been wanting to try some more Mighty Leaf because I love White Orchard, so I bought a cup of this one. Houjichas are one of my favorite types of teas, so I’ve become a bit picky about them. Compared to my favorite houjicha, this one was weaker and slightly more dried anchovy tasting, but for a bagged tea, it was actually really smooth and nice. If I needed a houjicha on the go, I’d be happy with this one.

Even though it’s still pretty cold (California cold) out, I suddenly had a craving for a fruity cold brew. So of course I turned to my favorite cold brew tea, Momo Oolong. I accidentally forgot about it and left it steeping for about 20 hours, but it didn’t turn out bitter. Instead, it was nice and juicy peach as usual with the smooth oolong base helping it along. I just love the way that Lupicia flavors their teas. There are so many other teas from there that I really want to try, but I’m trying to cut down my cupboard, not build it up! Eek.

I’ve been liking flavored teas less lately, but I still love the ones from Lupicia. Especially the fruity oolongs! :)

Sipdown (88). I overleafed a bit more than usual because it was the end of my stash of this particular tea. It didn’t turn out as great as I would have hoped for the sipdown of one of my favorite teas. It was a bit bitter and surprisingly a bit smoky as well. I don’t recall this tea ever being smoky. The strong malty flavor was familiar, though. Anyway, I am sad that I’m out of this one, and I hope to be able to sip down enough other teas soon to make another Verdant order!

Thankfully, my sense of taste and smell have been coming back to me today, so I thought I’d celebrate with a cup of this wonderfully smelling and tasting tea. It seems a little extra malty today to help me celebrate. I’m on my second steep, and the flavor is still strong, so of course I’m going to resteep until the leaves basically disintegrate.

I’ve really been wanting clean tasting teas (more than usual) while being sick because my head can’t comprehend anything complex very well. This bancha did a nice job of warming me up and providing a clean, veggie broth-like flavor tonight. I have to admit, that this tea can be a little TOO veggie for me sometimes, but it really fit the bill tonight!

Backlog from this morning. I’ve been a little extra clumsy today due to being sick, so I made this waay too strong. Even through my stuffy nose and dulled taste buds, I could taste the bitterness. However, upon resteeping, the boldness became manageable and actually enjoyable. My coffee-loving mother especially loved this one. I have a feeling she will be the one to finish off most of my 3+ oz of this tea.

I woke up with a stuffy nose, which quickly deteriorated into a full blown cold. Drats. So I picked this tea because I like the flavor and it is comforting to me, yet I don’t feel bad about wasting this tea on my dulled taste buds because I have a ton of these little tea bags and they’re pretty inexpensive. Win win for me today! (You know, other than being sick)

Yuck…feel better soon!

I needed a quick cuppa before heading out for lunch, so I grabbed this tea. To it’s credit, this tea seems to be pretty hard to mess up. And by mess up I mean get overly bitter and astringent or, on the other side of the spectrum, completely flavorless. It did seem a tad weak today, but I wasn’t being too careful about steeping parameters. I was getting mostly baked bread/honey notes with some weaker malt flavor. All in all, a pretty good tea.

I hope that everyone has had a good start to the new year! My first tea of 2015 was actually some bagged genmaicha at a friend’s house, but for a bagged tea, it was pretty good. Anyway, my first loose leaf tea after I got back to my own place was this tea! I know I probably sound like a broken record, but I just can’t get over how malty it tastes for a white tea. I was also getting a lot of baked bread flavor today (moreso than usual, but who’s complaining?). I love love love this tea and probably will continue to until the very last leaf! I’m going to have to hunt for a replacement when I’m done because it’s all out now :( But I won’t have to worry about that for a while, phew!

Sipdown (89)! And also a backlog from yesterday. This is actually the last tea I had in 2014. I have to say, that when 2014 started, I had just fallen in love (and hard) with green oolongs. Throughout the year, however, I started noticing this other flavor common among most green oolongs that I didn’t like as much. So I have unfortunately fallen out of love. I still like them, but that weirdly damp, almost moldy taste is just not going away for me. I will say, however, that this particular oolong did not have as strong of that taste as others, so it was still a very pleasant cup. If I were to buy a green oolong again, it would probably be this one or one from Verdant. Anyway, it was a nice end to my first full year of “serious” tea drinking!

Bio

I’m a California girl temporarily located in Boston for school (brrr). I only recently got into teas because I’ve never really liked coffee (too bitter), but I have been a daily barley tea drinker since I was little.

Through some timid tastings and exploring, I so far like:
-Japanese green teas (genmaicha, hojicha, sencha, etc)
-Oolongs! (Most kinds except formosa and dan cong so far)
-Straight black teas
-English Breakfast teas
-Fruity teas (peach, apple, strawberry, other berries)

NOT a huge fan of rooibos, matcha, heavily artificial tasting teas, or anything gingery or peppery, but I’m trying to keep an open mind and taste everything that I can!

I’m trying to sample more straight teas and have been having pretty awesome discoveries so far. Thank goodness for sample sizes!

My tentative rating system:
90-100: Woohoo! I’m loving it, and I’m definitely restocking when I get the chance and/or crying when I’m out.

80-90: Yum! I’ll try to restock if it fits in my budget when I run out.

70-80: Probably would not buy again, but it was nice enough to finish the cup.

50-70: Would not choose this tea for myself if given the situation, but would not reject it if someone offered it to me and would gulp down politely.

50 or less: Nope. Don’t care to taste that tea again, sorry!

I’m always down to swap, so send me a message if anything in my cupboard is calling your name!
