This was gross, and another Yogi Tea product I ended up just throwing out. The combination of the dry ginger taste and the licorice makes a peppery, herbal flavour that doesn’t resemble what the tea should. It’s not lemon and ginger, it just tastes musty and poor quality like other Yogi Products. Definitely not recommended. For something better than this (but admittedly still not perfect [sorry!]), give the Twinings lemon and ginger tea a try. It definitely blows this crap out of the water.

Rarely has a tea description missed the mark so thoroughly. This was almost the worst tea I’ve ever had. Maybe it was the combination of licorice with orange or something, but it wasn’t “tantalising” in the least—it was just bitter, spicy, herbal, and gross. This isn’t the first Yogi Tea product I’ve thought was complete shite, either. I won’t buy Yogi Tea stuff anymore, because this was the brand’s last chance for me and it failed miserably.

drank Lemon and Ginger by Twinings

This is a fairly nice tea. I drank it way too much (several times a day) and got over it, but it’s good. It’s pretty strong on the ginger, I feel, and then the next note is really lemongrass (rather than lemon). Needs more lemon, but otherwise, I think it’s good. I drank it sweetened or else it just tasted really wrong.

drank Sweet Temptation by Teekanne

This is a nice tea. It’s got hibiscus, apple, blueberry and vanilla flavours, orange peel, blackberry leaves, and elderberries. It tastes like blueberry with a bit of vanilla, mostly, I don’t taste any orange, and I only taste apple in that it gives that sense of sweet, non-specific fruitiness. This tea goes well with a bit of sweetener and a bowl of cashews and berries.

drank Mint with lemon by Teekanne

I may not be the best judge, really—I don’t like mint tea. I gave this a try because the combination of fresh mint and fresh lemon really appeals to me and so I thought this tea would, too. Not really! You can’t taste much lemon and it’s pretty much just that boring, bitter leaf mint tea taste as per usual. I still drink it sometimes because it helps when I have indigestion, but I wouldn’t buy it for enjoyment purposes.

drank Spice Mix by Rainbow Chai

For me, this tea is simply the best. I’m sad that I had to add it, because it means that other people probably don’t know about how good it is. I tried this before trying any chai mixed with tea leaves, and it’s so flavourful that when I’ve had chai with black tea in it, it’s just seemed so diluted. This is a delicious mixture of whole, dried spices, and thankfully, it doesn’t have any of the ones I consider questionable additions to chai (pepper is one, but fennel is probably the worst). The spices are strong enough that you can re-boil them at least two or three times more. It’s a very aromatic blend as you can probably imagine, and will fill your house with a strong, warm, sinus-clearing kind of smell. If you haven’t tried cardamom in tea before, this could be very interesting indeed for you. Also, I don’t find that cinnamon is the strongest favour here as it is with some other chais (here it’d probably be ginger), so you may be in for a pleasant surprise if you try this.

I simmer a large amount of the spice in a pot of water until the water’s very dark and then strain it and add sweetener and soy milk (theoretically, you could drink it without either, but I’d not recommend drinking it without at least some sweetener since the spices have that sharpness to them). It’s perfect! The strong, spicy taste is comfort in a cup to me. It’s like the culinary equivalent of a fleecy blanket. This tea has it all: incomparable flavour, no caffeine to keep you up in inconvenient times, it’s affordable, it’s hand blended by a family company. Honestly, I can’t speak highly enough of this tea. It’s the best chai I’ve ever had, for sure.

drank Heiße Liebe by Teekanne

I drank this for the first time in a while today, and it makes me feel I may end up rethinking my opinions on some of the sweeter supermarket teas I’ve got. I thought they were the bomb, but after tasting the complexity and the dimension of other teas, such as the Kusmi teas I’ve been drinking for a while now, I have kind of a different take. I like this tea for the fact that it’s simple, inoffensive, and with a bit of sweetener (there’s a really fine line in this case between a bit and too much, though—enough to slightly reduce the sourness and bring out the flavour, but not enough to make the resemblance to raspberry candy, cordial, or drink syrup unavoidable) is a nice fruity companion to a snack. I like to drink this simple, pleasing tea with a plate of cashews and fresh berries. Sometimes simplicity can also be a drawback, though. I think that’s the case here. The simpleness of the tea wouldn’t be a problem were the flavour not so cloying at times, though.

Like real berries, it has a little tartness and has a tiny bit of its own sweetness, but upon reconsidering it, I think the fruity flavour (just fruity—the vanilla element of the tea is wholly imperceptible to me) is actually too assertive for its lack of dimension. It’s a bit like the raspberry tea equivalent of Ribena drink (I always loved that, but you can’t deny that it’s pretty full-on, and without enough dilution can be cloying). Its flavour doesn’t have the flavour nuances of real fruit, and every sip and part thereof pretty much gives you a one-note flavour. Maybe I’ve just tired of it now that I’m on to my second box (in eight months, though), but I just can’t feel the enthusiasm I had for it before, so I’m going to put the rating down a bit.

I think this tea could improve by either being mixed with a plain black tea and used as an iced tea, or served with some fresh mint and lime juice and zest. I’m on my last bag of it, though, and now that I’ve reconsidered my perspective on it, instead of rebuying it, I’m going to go for something new and unrelated.

I feel a bit crap now that I’ve started getting into caffeinated teas and walked away from my herbal tea habit, because now that I’ve had these more expensive Kusmi teas and other teas with the tea leaf in them, I’ve found no herbal tea really has that body to it. This is annoying, because I really can’t drink much caffeine and I’d like to be able to enjoy tea at any time of the day. I might try to give rooibos more attention in future or something.

Also, just so that you know: I read a little while ago that apparently some herbal teas can be as bad for your teeth as acidic drinks like juice and soda. In case you hadn’t noticed, some of them have citric acid in them (including this one, and it’s obvious), so if you don’t drink water after drinking your herbal tea, it might be something you should consider doing in future.

drank Limette by Teekanne

This is one of my favourites of the herbal teas I’ve gotten in Germany. I can’t think of much to say on it at the moment. If you like lime, you’ll like this! I drink it hot with sweetener.

drank Oriental Spice Tea by Teekanne

I added this tea just so I could express my disappointment in it. Even though I found it unpleasant the first time, I tried it again to make sure, because I didn’t want to throw out a whole packet of tea unnecessarily. It went in the bin after the second try.

I don’t know what went wrong with this tea. The ingredients make it seem so good, but it just has a grating, boozy flavour that tastes like spiced rum gone wrong or something. The flavour was something I’d have to choke down. It was without a doubt the worst tea I’ve ever had, which really surprised me, because I own something like 15 other boxes of Teekanne tea, and not one of them ever disappointed me before this. I had it with sweetener and no milk. There’s a chance milk could improve the flavour, but it’s just so bad that I don’t even think so. I think the problem is that they tried to do too many things at once—orange, every Christmas-sy spice at once, vanilla, chicory. The chicory could well be the problem, since I don’t really know what it tastes like. They should reformulate this, perhaps with fewer spices, no chicory, and a rooibos base. Not recommended!

drank Orange Blossom by Tazo

I’m undecided about my thoughts on this tea in a way. The combination of the green, the orange, and the jasmine makes for a truly divine brew that’s floral and full, without delving into being perfume-y. But the second time I tried this, I really noticed the chamomile in it. Chamomile is not something I appreciate in my tea at all. I think if this tea didn’t have chamomile, it could be perfect, but the chamomile gives it a discordant note that interrupts the otherwise stellar flavour. I had it with sweetener and definitely wouldn’t recommend it without that. The orangey, floral flavour may seem milk-friendly, but I’d try it without it first if I were you.

I said it isn’t perfume-y, but in one way it is: there’s so many ingredients that come together to create the flavour, but like a well-blended perfume, it can be hard to single these out from the overarching sense of rich flavour. I got mostly orange and jasmine, which may be good, because I don’t want fennel or chamomile or tarragon in my tea. The fragrance of this tea is just wonderful.
