This tea has made me so deliriously happy that I hesitate to part with this old empty packet, sipped down eons ago. But away it goes.

And it’s another sipdown!

Another good one from 52teas. Generally, I like what Anne does with berries.

And it’s another sipdown!

This tea has a lovely juicy quality to it that makes it really easy to drink every day, which I have been doing. And now, it’s gone.

I had squirrelled away the last bit of this from eons ago. Added a dash of Keemun Classic. This one, really, is a very nice cup. All flavours here shine just enough. Raising my rating.

And it’s a sipdown!

Ancient for a green tea. Still, though the intensity has faded, the pleasant previous flavours are still there.

This one I like. I has a nice honeyed fruit sweetness to it, in addition to a firm tea kick in the pants. As luck would have it, I ordered just a tagalong of this one, and a tin of the one I am having a questionable relationship with. And so it goes.

The Canadian distributor of H & S threw in a small box of handmade pumpkin spice shortbread cookies. I am having a few now with my cup of this tea. Both are delicious. So much so that I almost forgive both the distributor and H & S for yesterday’s all day tea fiasco. Almost.

This is a special tea to me because when I first read about it, it was only available as sachets in the Historic Royal Palaces tin, but it was sold out everywhere. Ashman googled like mad and found it at some little gift shop and ordered it for our anniversary.

Shortly after that, I pestered the Harney FB page for loose leaf and Mike himself finally replied in a public comment to me that he was about to blend some and would make a pound loose just for me if I would DM my info. Several people immediately commented that they wanted a pound, too, and he commented, “We hear you, here is a link.” They made it available loose leaf ever since!

Evol Ving Ness

Hurray, ashmanra, for being the reason that this is now available in the form we like! Well done! Thank you!

ashmanra

You’re welcome! But not just me, ha ha! I was glad his comment was public so other folks jumped on the bandwagon. One woman even requested one pound for herself and a pound for her mother to be delivered at intervals. Ha ha! I think it was the eagerness of all of us combined that swayed him.

Evol Ving Ness

Still, you are a large part of the story. I’ll just stay with that.

Evol Ving Ness

Also, throwing a box of free delicious shortbread cookies into a tea order is brilliant.

Oh that’s great to know, ashmanra – Tower of London is one of the RARE teas I actually have a tin of.

Lexie Aleah

Tower Of London is delicious and similar to Paris which I love as well. I have a tin of Boston I’m still working on finishing but wish it was Tower Of London. (: Also free shortbread cookies? yum

Evol Ving Ness

Yeah, those cookies are long gone, but I may need to order some more.

Ok, drinking and thinking. Chocolate and almond, maybe. A bit of bitterness. Cranberry, kind of, in the background. Wondering if this is an older batch, or it needs milk, or it just needs to grow on me some.

Also, this is my 1234th post :)

This is one of those teas from Harney that I so want to love because it sounds amazing, but I just don’t get it. A lot of others love it though!

ashmanra

I loved it, and about a year or two ago my newest batch had the smell Ashman hates – he thought it was artificial chocolate but I think ti is artificial vanilla, and he smells it in Florence and Chocolate Mint, too. As much as I love Boston, I gave it away.

Evol Ving Ness

To me, it tastes like artificial chocolate, or a chocolate flavour I just don’t like. This batch is from the Canadian distributor, so I am wondering whether it’s been hanging around for a while and that’s the flavour. Maybe it’s artificial vanilla, as you say.

Or maybe, I just don’t love it.

And that sucks. It sucks even more because I got Florence too.

Evol Ving Ness

Do you think they changed the formula?

ashmanra

I have wondered if they had to switch to artificial vanilla because of the huge price increase for vanilla beans. They came out with Vieux Paris around the same time saying it was a return of their original Paris formula, and Vieux Paris, like the original Paris long long ago, has artificial vanilla. I did not find it hugely different from Paris and now that my Vieux Paris is gone I will order regular Paris again.

Ashman has always hated the smell of Florence and most chocolate teas from most companies. He says it smells like mildew to him and I can see it. He liked Cuppageek and other companies who use real cocao nibs and such.

Personally, I like Florence pretty well but I have not had it in years, so I don’t know if they have changed it. When the smell bothered him so much that he could walk in the house hours after I drank it and ask if I had “that tea” today, I just gave it away! Ha ha! He was distraught that I did, but I didn’t mind, since there are plenty of chocolate teas we both like.

Evol Ving Ness

Thank you, ashmanra, for your help and musings as I try to get to the bottom of this mystery. More thoughts coming. Stay tuned.

Evol Ving Ness

Hmm, in the box that my tins came in, Boston was sitting right right to Florence. Closed tins, mind you, but still. I haven’t tried the Florence yet. Not up to it after a day of tea with questionable flavouring.

ashmanra

Interesting! I look forward to your thoughts on Florence!

Lexie Aleah

I really like Paris from H&H They also have a really nice Bartlett Pear tea.

Evol Ving Ness

Thanks for the tip, Lexie Aleah. They are on my list.

Evol Ving Ness

Ashmanra, after my initial experience with Boston, I am in no rush.

Note to self—-you do not actually need any more tea.

My real tea obsession began in February 2015.

Not, sadly, when I had been living and working in China, though I very much enjoyed sampling a variety of teas during my travels there as well. No, no, that would have been far too sensible.

I am a reformed coffee drinker. I still enjoy a long double espresso with a good quantity or milk or cream from time to time, but for now, tea is my thing. All day.

*note—this is way out of date, so if we are doing a swap and you are checking to see what I like and dislike, mostly never mind what you find below. One of these days, I will update this. In the meantime, check what I’ve been drinking and use your own judgement. I like all the teas. Well, I am open to trying all the teas.

I tend to drink black, green, or oolong tea in the morning to early afternoon. Rooibos or
Honeybush or herbal in the evening. And perhaps some sort of sleepy-type tea in the wee hours.

This year, I’ve been discovering flavoured teas, so it may look like that is all I drink although that would provide a false impression.

Not a big fan of chocolate or mint in teas, but I will try them and, from time to time, have been pleasantly surprised. Also, usually I dislike a prominent cinnamon flavour, if untempered with other things, in teas. Again, I say usually, because there are exceptions.

Also, please note that haven’t quite gotten into the habit of updating my tea cupboard on Steepster, and it is unlikely that I will do this on any kind of regular basis.

I drink my tea black and unsweetened. If there comes a rare moment that I add something to it, I will mention it.

Finally, while I thank large and successful tea companies for tantalizing and beckoning me to the world of tea, I prefer to support independent ventures with real people, real enthusiasm and commitment, and real dreams.

Currently, I am researching monthly tea subscriptions. Perhaps it will keep me out of tea shops.

And here is Shae’s rating scale— which I am using with permission, of course— which more or less describes the way I have been rating teas. I am going to make more of an effort to stay very close to these parameters now.

Rating Scale

1-20: By far, one of the worst teas I’ve tasted. I most certainly will not finish my cup and will likely “gift” the rest to my sweet husband who almost always enjoys the teas I dislike (and vice versa).

21-40: This tea is not good but if I mix it with another tea or find another steeping method I might be able to finish it.

41-60: This one is just okay. I might drink it again if someone were to give it to me, but I probably won’t be buying more for myself.

61-75: This is a consistently good tea. It’s reliable but not necessarily special.

76-90: This one is a notch above the rest and I would gladly enjoy a cup of it any day of the week. I’ll likely be keeping this in my cupboard, but it isn’t one of my all-time favorites.

91-95: One small change and this tea would be perfect. I’ll definitely have a stash of this in my kitchen if you come over for tea.

96-100: No words can describe this tea. It’s an experience, an aha moment. Closed eyes, wide smile, encompassing warmth. Absolutely incredible. Perfect.

Mostly, but not always, Toronto, Canada.
