This apparently is just what I need today.

That and a full night’s sleep for a few days in a row. My neighbours on both sides have been waking me up for years. On one side, there’s a couple in their thirties with two kids—and a large noisy extended family. Both of them work out, in the house, on old wooden floors and on an elliptical and with other devices plus a Wii. Guessing that the kids do too, so there are several hours of action over there. All their devices are wireless and there seem to be several of them running at the same time. The adults appear to need little sleep.

On the other side, there’s a family of six plus several tenants who all seem to be running some sort of surveillance operation from their house throughout the night. All night long, their house is lit up from multiple screens inside. There are also people coming and going all the time, and their devices are in motion.

Between the two sides, I am woken repeatedly and kept awake for hours at a time. Not by noise but rather by electro-magnetic frequency of all these devices at close range.

If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

It would be awesome if I could block their signals or jam their devices in my proximity, but it is illegal in my country, so it is not possible to purchase items which do this.

Sorry about the rant. It’s been a long long haul and I am not in the best of health to begin with.

Anyway, this tea was good. Milky floral good.

Martin Bednář

Sorry you have to deal with it and not sure if I have some other opinion than moving out. Earplugs were tried I suppose.

Evol Ving Ness

Thank you, Martin. Yes, I tried seven different kinds of earplugs—foam, hard and soft rubber, two different kinds of wax, also some with metal cores.

Ok, this one is FAB.

I had approached it with trepidation, given my unfortunate even painful experiences with Boston and Apricot. This order came from H & S’s Canadian distributor. It was my first ever order of H & S teas. Because both of those teas tasted off, somehow synthetic and unpleasant, I was concerned that all my teas in this particular order were tainted, either in my order box or from the storage facility.

I was unfamiliar with all their teas aside from Paris, which someone shared with me through either a swap or the GCTTB.

I refuse to believe that Boston and Apricot are supposed to taste the way these do. And I refuse to give up on H & S. Yet. I am guessing that I will order a sample of both Boston and Apricot one day directly from them to check what is what.

yep, I like this one a lot. Honeyed berry malt on a punchy base.

I can absolutely see this tea as one on permanent rotation.

Shae

I feel like I’m one of the only ones who doesn’t like Boston. Glad to know it’s not just me!

Evol Ving Ness

No, not just you. I haven’t given up on it completely. I’ve only steeped it that once so far. Stay tuned.

Cameron B.

I’m not a fan of Boston either. :(

eastkyteaguy

Add me to the not a fan of Boston club as well. I don’t think I even bothered reviewing it.

Evol Ving Ness

Oh dear. I am wondering what exactly put you all off about Boston.

Evol Ving Ness

Because the people that love it, absolutely adore it.

ashmanra

I loved Boston, but something changed. It has the weird aroma like their chocolate teas have now.

As for the Queen, my love of Catherine has never been hidden.

Evol Ving Ness

Yes, yes, weird aroma and equally weird taste. Same with Apricot. I wonder if it has leeched from Florence. I know we’ve had this discussion before.

Also, the Queen and her fortitude in times of need won me over. Totally agree.

tea-sipper

ouch, looks like I gave Boston a rating of 55 a long time ago and that is very low for me and a Harney tea…

I don’t know. The scent of the steeping tea and the first couple of sips were promising, but now, false synthetic flavours are coming through on the pleasant true apricot. I don’t know whether this is contamination at the warehouse or during shipment, or if that is just the tea.

On the other hand, I used a DT’s perfect spoon, as I always do, to measure the leaf. Perhaps it was too much leaf. Though the tea does not taste too strong.

Or perhaps I am just spoiled with Anne’s teas. Maybe that’s it. But people seem to like H & S blends, so I don’t get it.

ashmanra

My tea party guest is in love with this one. I do agree that the flavoring is powerful in it but I like it well enough.

Evol Ving Ness

I don’t mind powerful flavouring. There’s just this false note. Maybe it will fade when I am able to shake the tin up.

drank Chai Houjicha by 52teas

Roasty toasty and Anne’s chai spices. Really good. Much prefer it to the previous houjicha versions such as Gingerbread Houjicha.

Also, I must really store my teas beautifully because this was lovely. I do NOT think this was from 2016. Was there a more recent version?

52Teas

I haven’t reblended this – this is the batch from 2016.

Evol Ving Ness

Oops, still VERY tasty. The packet had been unopened and sitting in a cool dark space. Maybe that’s the secret.

52Teas

I think so. Air & heat are two things that can cause teas to fade. I’m really glad this one has stayed true to it’s flavor all this time & that you’re enjoying it! I really liked this one – might have to consider bringing it back at some point.

Evol Ving Ness

I also have a committed relationship with heavy duty ziplock freezer bags. So there’s that too.

Beautiful true peach. No ginger that I detected though this has been hanging around for a while. the lack of ginger doesn’t trouble me at all. Delightful cup.

In other news, I wasn’t able to dine in a restaurant today because I had forgotten my vaccine passport. I had gone to pick up some takeout and, on a whim, thought that I would have a bowl of something there as well. It was such a lovely day. Oh well.

And it’s a sipdown!

Not quite sure how this one came my way. I remember tart/sour and I remember a roastier sort of oolong.

Thank you to the person who passed it along for me to try. This blend of flavours is not really working for me.

So, this was actually a mistake because I had thought that I was pulling out a different tea to steep. All good, though.

I’ve been staying away from rooibos and honey bush for a long while now. Just have found myself veering towards black, green, white.

The absence has been good for me, apparently, because I am quite enjoying this one. A bit formal, a bit tart, a bit berry. Haven’t checked the ingredient list or the description, but I suspect lavender, hibiscus, berry, and vanilla to tie it all together.

Also, does anyone know what’s going on with FB?

This has been another BIG favourite of mine from 52teas. Someone wonderful commissioned this tea from Anne based on a Korean sweet brown sugar fried pancake dessert. Whoever it was must have described the dessert perfectly because then Anne captured all the essential qualities in this tea. Really well done!

Apparently, the base of this tea is gone and unavailable forever, so that’s that. But really excellent memories remain. Maybe one day, who knows.

And it’s another sipdown!

#long time ago internet hiatus sipdown

52Teas

It’s not unavailable forever – just not a feasible purchase at this time.

Evol Ving Ness

Thank you, Anne. I’m looking at that as a promising thing. Something to look forward to.

52Teas

I hope so. I definitely would like to reblend it at some time. It’s yummy!

Evol Ving Ness

Yeah, that buttery, caramellised brown sugar, with the teeniest hint of cinnamon on that base! Omgwow! :)

Tiffany :)

Oh my, this does sound yummy and Anne is one of my favorite tea blenders. :)

Note to self—-you do not actually need any more tea.

My real tea obsession began in February 2015.

Not, sadly, when I had been living and working in China, though I very much enjoyed sampling a variety of teas during my travels there as well. No, no, that would have been far too sensible.

I am a reformed coffee drinker. I still enjoy a long double espresso with a good quantity or milk or cream from time to time, but for now, tea is my thing. All day.

*note—this is way out of date, so if we are doing a swap and you are checking to see what I like and dislike, mostly never mind what you find below. One of these days, I will update this. In the meantime, check what I’ve been drinking and use your own judgement. I like all the teas. Well, I am open to trying all the teas.

I tend to drink black, green, or oolong tea in the morning to early afternoon. Rooibos or
Honeybush or herbal in the evening. And perhaps some sort of sleepy-type tea in the wee hours.

This year, I’ve been discovering flavoured teas, so it may look like that is all I drink although that would provide a false impression.

Not a big fan of chocolate or mint in teas, but I will try them and, from time to time, have been pleasantly surprised. Also, usually I dislike a prominent cinnamon flavour, if untempered with other things, in teas. Again, I say usually, because there are exceptions.

Also, please note that haven’t quite gotten into the habit of updating my tea cupboard on Steepster, and it is unlikely that I will do this on any kind of regular basis.

I drink my tea black and unsweetened. If there comes a rare moment that I add something to it, I will mention it.

Finally, while I thank large and successful tea companies for tantalizing and beckoning me to the world of tea, I prefer to support independent ventures with real people, real enthusiasm and commitment, and real dreams.

Currently, I am researching monthly tea subscriptions. Perhaps it will keep me out of tea shops.

And here is Shae’s rating scale— which I am using with permission, of course— which more or less describes the way I have been rating teas. I am going to make more of an effort to stay very close to these parameters now.

Rating Scale

1-20: By far, one of the worst teas I’ve tasted. I most certainly will not finish my cup and will likely “gift” the rest to my sweet husband who almost always enjoys the teas I dislike (and vice versa).

21-40: This tea is not good but if I mix it with another tea or find another steeping method I might be able to finish it.

41-60: This one is just okay. I might drink it again if someone were to give it to me, but I probably won’t be buying more for myself.

61-75: This is a consistently good tea. It’s reliable but not necessarily special.

76-90: This one is a notch above the rest and I would gladly enjoy a cup of it any day of the week. I’ll likely be keeping this in my cupboard, but it isn’t one of my all-time favorites.

91-95: One small change and this tea would be perfect. I’ll definitely have a stash of this in my kitchen if you come over for tea.

96-100: No words can describe this tea. It’s an experience, an aha moment. Closed eyes, wide smile, encompassing warmth. Absolutely incredible. Perfect.
