pu-erh of the day. Sheng or Shou
Today I drank an expensive ripe, the 2016 Hai Lang Hao Lao Man E Ripe Puerh Tea Brick. This 1 kg brick costs $405 but I did get a 12% discount. I trusted Scott enough to take a chance on the brick. And I have to say it was an excellent tea, one of the best young ripe teas I have had. Over fourteen steeps it was quite good. There was initially a lot of fermentation flavor and this flavor was slightly unpleasant but not fishy. There was a bittersweet note that seemed to me like dark chocolate. This was replaced by another note, a sweet note when all this went away. I have yet to decide if it was worth the whole brick. For that I have to drink it again. But it was damn good tea, that is for sure. If you are putting in a Yunnan Sourcing order this one is definitely worth a sample, I believe he sells 25g and 100g sample portions. I will drink this again soon and see if I still like it as much as today.
Drank some of the 2016 Yiwu Charity cake from Tea Urchin. It’s a really soft and easy to drink tea. The leaves also have great longevity. Felt like the session would never end for a minute there!
It’s a rare day when I can mention drinking pu’ehr tea.
I did try David Tea’s Silken Pu’ehr over the holidays. No where near as disgusting aa a small tuer cha. Plenty of wet leaf smells and a little fish or earth :)
I would say milder than I had expected.
It looks more like a regular tea, as if it was shredded.
Today I drank the 2012 Bang Dong Spring fromo Tea Urchin, a sample I got with the sheng olympics of Liquid Proust. The was a nice tea with a good mix of bitter and sweet. I really wasn’t paying attention to the specifics but it was good. If I didn’t already have too much sheng I probably would go and buy a cake. It was nice to have tried it. Not sure if I am learning any more about the region Bang Dong but it was good.
2007 Dayi Adorned in Red Sheng today.
Long story short, I easily prefered the 2015 Legend cake, in spite of this one being more mellow with some extra age.
I’ve started off the day with 2008 Haiwan 958 sheng, that should see me OK until mid-day, then I think I’ll have a pre-lunch session with the White2Tea 2015 Smooch teaball I got yesterday as a sample.
finishing off a bag of YS Golden Needle loose shou from Yong De. Being loose (& me filling half the gaiwan with the dust) its pretty strong, but quite nice & comfy feeling. Its a bit dry & lack of sweetness & richness, but probably pretty cheap? i cant remember
When I woke up this morning I was a bit surprised not to mention disappointed to discover that during the night something nasty had converted my nasal cavities into a glue factory.
Smell and taste services appear to be down for the foreseeable future, so I’ve dug out the cheapest, roughest shou I own and I’ll be steeping it heavy and hard.
