Japanese Tea Identification Help Needed

I was gifted what I was told was a tea from Japan. It is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, though, and have been unable to figure out what it is and how to drink it.

It is dark and sticky, compressed like a puer, though you can’t see any tea leaves, and it came with a small knife.

Any ideas? Maybe it isn’t even tea after all?

From the sound of it, my guess is it’s a rare Japanese puerh compressed into a tea cake. The knife is to break off a small chunk for steeping. Have you taken a whiff of it? If it’s smells earthy it’s a good bet that’s it’s indeed puerh
