Gaiwan / Houhin questions
I just ordered my first gaiwan the other evening and can’t wait! I plan on trying to drink directly from the cup ala this 3 part video (with me not really doing the ceremony aspects): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VBJjiEVt88&feature=related I’ll post an update on any issues/traumas I have while attempting to do so.
I also think she seems like the sweetest lady ever! I spent almost an hour one day watching her videos. I think it’s in the second one of this set where someone off camera gives her some direction and she gets a little flustered. I wish I lived near her store just so I could take a class or two from her!
I also need to chime in and say how pretty both your and Gingko’s sets are. I’m trying not to covet! :)
You’re very sweet – thank you! I’m really getting into this small amount of water/multiple infusion per tea way of drinking (I didn’t even know about it until I came here to Steepster!) and these little gaiwans/teeny tiny teapots are great for this new-to-me way of indulging in some of the great green teas and oolongs!
This my gaiwan story – I bought a pair of cute gaiwan http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq70/gingkoheight/1-2.jpg and soon found its lid and saucer just fit my favorite teacup. So I instantly got two different gaiwan :-D http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq70/gingkoheight/2.jpg They almost look as if they belonged to each other :-D http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq70/gingkoheight/gaiwaninuse.jpg
When I didn’t have a gainwan in hands, I assembled these into a “gaiwan” http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq70/gingkoheight/brewingbancha2.jpg
Thank you! Prior to coming onto Steepster (in Dec 2009), I didn’t know to do small quantity tea/multiple infusions – but now that I’ve discovered the joy of doing just that & enjoying the ever-changing, multi-dimensional taste of the tea, I’m really appreciating these gaiwans and teeny-tiny teapots!
Before I got my gaiwan I tried using a rice bowl and two saucers , it actually worked..I finally decided on a gaiwan instead of a houhin because I thought the lip that holds the houhins lid would catch leaves and wouldnt be as easy to swipe out the spent leaves as well as a smooth sided gaiwan.I love the way a houhin looks though, and have my eye on one or two ( I need more tea space! ) Yours are quite beautiful Lauren : )
