Aged Tian Jian 2012
The finest grade of Hei Cha (dark tea) from Hunan Province, Aged Tian Jian 2012 (Heavenly Tips) produces a complex cup. The first sip entices the palate with hints of bamboo water, stewed plum, and raw almond. Then a musky undertone complemented by gourmet notes of maple wood smoke and pine gradually develop throughout subsequent infusions. Similar to an aged Sheng Pu’er, Tian Jian leaves a lingering aftertaste that is sweet and soothing.

Unbeknownst to many outside the tranquil village of its origin, Tian Jian was once a tribute tea exclusive to the imperial court. Till this day, local tea makers continue to handcraft our Tian Jian the old fashioned way. The tea’s rustic appearance speaks to its centuries-old heritage. After a light fermentation, the leaves are dried over gentle pine wood fire. Once firing is complete, the leaves are stored in a bamboo basket for natural oxidation and further aging. Highly recommended for connoisseurs and the curious.

excuse me for the noob question :) so is this Aged Tian Jian a Black tea? Or perhaps Oolong tea?

Ah, it’s actually a Dark tea or “heicha”. It’s post-fermented, kinda like pu-erh. Unlike Black tea or Oolong, which are both fixated (pan fried for most Chinese teas) after a certain degree of processing, Dark tea is allowed to naturally ferment or continue to age post-processing. I highly recommend this Aged Tian Jian!

So far Tian Jian I have tried has tasted very little like puerh. I admit I have so far only tried two.

Yea a lot of Tian Jian I’ve tried were musky without too much depth to it. I spent some time trying different heicha coz I knew very little about it for the longest time. It’s interesting that this lesser known stuff got quite some history. And the cup can get very complex!

It took a while to find this Aged Tian Jian I like. If I have to describe the taste it’d be similar to Sheng Pu-erh. Very sweet and lasting aftertaste.
