New Yixing Teapot

I’ve used the Verdant method for two teapots (one for a roasted oolong and the other for tieguanyin), and once to re-season one of my pots (re-season the roasted oolong to shou). I find it seems to work well. I have also just started brewing shou tea in my Jian Shui teapot after a quick rinse with boiling water (similar to how boychik does) and that one has also been seasoning nicely. Just be careful that the pot doesn’t rattle around in the boiling pot if you are doing the boiling method! Welcome to the yixing world :)

Oh, and I use filtered water to rinse out my yixings after use, as I find with my tap water a white film was left on the pots. Also +1 to leaving the lid off while drying!

if you must boil……put a wash rag on the bottom of the pot. then its in a nice little bed.

+1 soft boil as well.

And crimp the towel in the middle to create a barrier between the pot and lid.

yeap, i used Verdant tea’s method when i got it. used wooden spoons and sort of propped the pot/lid on the side, so that it wasn’t in contact with the bottom. then soaked the pot/lid in shou until room temp. it’s working great a few days in! Now, for a sheng and oolong yixing! Probably going to go a little cheaper on the oolong one though (maybe an ebay knockoff :) ) Update, purchased a cheapo one for oolong on ebay from ‘chineseteapotgallery’ – Chinese Yixing Zisha mini teapot pear shape. crossing my fingers! Going to wait and be selective for the sheng one. Would like another Mandala one, but it looks like i may have got the last one!

Not sure why they tell you to use wooden spoons.

The stuff the chinese teapot gallery sells can be ok or it can be crap, you just have to be careful. The stuff they sell for less than $10 is almost certainly not real yixing. However, that doesn’t automatically mean it will be a bad pot.

This EBay store has a lot of pots that are quite cheap. I have bought several from them and liked what I got.
