Do you take notes?

This question it’s specially for pu erh drinkers, but also for any other tea drinkers.

When you taste any tea, do you take notes such as the reviews that we post here in steepster to compare it (in the case of pu erh) in the future and see if the tea has improved/changed or not?

I don’t usually. I write as I drink. Makes for occasionally rather long-winded stream of consciousness posts, but there you are.

That tends to be my process as well.

+1. I have in the past delayed trying a tea so that I could do my note at the same time.

I write notes on a spreadsheet about 90% of the time. After I’ve had a tea a few times I try to write up a more detailed review for steepster, but I have to admit I’ve been spotty about the reviews.

I think reviews are harder for puerh, partly because it has less obvious flavors (at least to me) and partly because it is constantly changing, not just from session to session, but from steep to steep. As a result of this variability, I’ll often not give a numerical grade.

My idea is to write what I think and the notes I can find in every steep, and also the water temp and gr of leaves used to see how it changes.

I used to, but now I prefer to just enjoy the tea and keep mental notes of which ones I like rather than a scientific approach of keeping detailed notes. I just seem to prefer enjoying the experience rather than documenting the experience. Probably has something to do with using my right brain vs. left brain. I guess I’m more of a right brain person…

I was keeping a tea diary of sorts for a while but I stopped. I don’t take notes for my Steepster reviews. I try to write the review while I am still drinking the tea.

I take very detailed notes as I drink tea. Not for every single cup I drink, but quite often. I like to keep track of different notes noticeable as I change brewing parameters, and the change between harvests.

@AllanK @mrmopar That’s what I use to do, I write my impresions while i’m drinking the tea.

As I have recently bought some cakes to age it for a few years I think that it would be funny to take notes and see how it has changed in the future.

Yes, if you logged them now you can always go back and see how the tea has changed.

I journal in a marble notebook. I only make entries when I perform gongfu sessions and/or when I want to evaluate a tea to write a review. There’s too much about these teas to keep inside my head – it helps to gather my thoughts. I prefer to keep track of teas with my journal because I write down the exact date I had the tea. Steepster is vague with time.
