Earl Grey smell....

So I’ve been wanting to try Earl Grey tea for a bit, so I jumped at the chance of getting a free tub from work. Turns out Indie Teas closed up shop and my boss wanted to free up space on the shelf for products she could refresh. So I have a container of Crazy Earl tea from Indie teas….and I have one question.

Is it supposed to smell like dusty old pennies? I figured I’d smell black tea and citrus…nope. I haven’t been able to bring myself to trying a cup, just due to the smell when I open it up.

Thanks in advance!

That….sounds like it might have gone off. I find that sometimes black teas can have a metallic tinge to it, and it could be that your olfactory center is just registering it as metallic, but the dusty part has me thinking that your tub of tea is stale.

I don’t know about the metallic bit, but bergamot has always had a dusty, perfume-y sort of smell to me, never particularly citrus-y. So that description sounds fairly normal to me.

If you are not generally experiencing bergamot smell the same way that I do, I’m not sure I would bother with that tin if I were you. Probably wouldn’t be worth it.

If the tea contains bergamot oil (versus bergamot flavour) then the oil could go rancid after a period of time. Even if it was closed and stored well.

Ok, I think it’s gone bad. I raided the stash of random teabags we have at my other job and the bag of Celestial Seasonings Victorian Earl Grey smells a lot nicer then the stuff I have at home.

Thanks everyone!
