Woah, smells like bacon! This Russian Caravan is maybe a bit more smoked than what I generally like. Rather than using the usual Chinese black teas they seem to have gone with the more conventional (and cheaper?) Indian black teas. And you can tell as the tea has more bitterness and astringency than what I’m used to tasting in most Russian Caravan blends. Meh.
Preparation
There was a quite a yummy blueberry scent when I opened the package today. The green tea base is a nice one too, lightly vegetale with that hint of smokiness that I like in gunpowder greens. Like most flavoures teas, the blueberry flavour is more noticable as the tea cools and I found it nice and fruity without being too artifical-tasting. I’m not the biggest fan of flavoured greens, but I found this one to be quite agreeable.
Preparation
Adding milk does improve the tea and I think it gives the tea a more balanced flavour profile. I can taste the nutty pecans more clearly, though I’m not really getting anything that might qualify as the ‘pie’ part of the tea. Still it’s an improvement over taking this tea plain so I’m bumping up my rating a few notches.
Preparation
This is a fairly unremarkable black tea. I’m drinking it plain right now so it might be improved by soem milk and/or sugar. It largely tastes like black tea at first, then the pecan flavour sorta comes in at the end of each sip. Nothing special, but it isn’t gack-worthy either.
Is there a Russian Caravan you really like? I’ve been thinking about getting the one from Upton but am open to suggestions. :)
I’ve never really had a RC Blend, but if you wanted to try one from Upton, you could shoot them an email. They are really good at responding. I usually email Karen, but they are all helpful. I think the Finest Russian Caravan would probably be smoother. Or, is it the smokiness? I know you’re not fond of overly smokey teas.
I want one that isn’t too smoky. Might also give Mark T. Wendell’s a try
Murchie’s makes a good Russian Caravan, I’ve found: http://www.murchies.com/store/tea/russian-caravan.html
