Sipdown! (226)

I just realized why this tasted like a mocha and it’s because it has coffee in it. LIke, actual coffee. Good thing I like coffee, but I know that spells trouble for some of you.

Still, I really enjoyed it, and am now 2/2 for Simple Loose Leaf Teas! Thanks Sil!

Ok. this is another one from Sil-zilla. giggles

It’s really nice! I don’t get much chocolate from it, but it’s creamy and a little sweet. It’s almost mocha-ish, instead of chocolate. Odd! But good.

Thanks!

Sil

this one made me drool a little from a creamy coffee like substance

I drank this because I heard it was the last day of winter today and that means it should be the end of winter teas!

It was ok, but didn’t grab me. Maybe it would if I had it 3 months ago.

There’s a small part of me that thinks I should post on every tea I shared with you….just for funnies lol

Another tea from awkward soul via Terri. I figured i should have one green tea today..i guess. Frankly the whole commercial weirdo holiday thing makes my brain hurt. This is a really lovely vanilla mint green tea. I know it SAYS raspberry but to my there’s only the hint of fruitiness in thebackground. It’s like the raspberry isn’t quite ready to come out and play. It DOES add something to the tea as it’s not quite JUST a vanilla mint green..but it’s not strong enough for me to say YES! Raspberry! YES!

drank Creme Brule Black by Simple Loose Leaf
15006 tasting notes

This was my other flavoured tea from this morning. It’s also one of the teas terri and i picked up from Awkward Soul I have to say that this one smells strong, and has a really nice aroma. I’m not sure that i’d call it creme brulee exactly…but it’s delicious smelling. Upon brewing it, there’s a nice rich taste to this, though again…creme brulee? not really. It’s missing that sweet burnt sugar sort of taste in my opinion but it IS pretty tasty. hopefully Cavo will like this, and if not, she can continue the sharing tea! hahaha

nom nom nom. this one is pretty tasty. I don’t think i’d order it again, or maybe just one a year sort of thing but it’s a pretty good gingerbreadish sort of tea. This is another one from terri from awkward soul :) I have a feeling that the base in this one would turn bitter if brewed for too long as it reminds me of that sort of tea. However, this was certainly a tasty cup!

Whoa, this black was intense! I’m glad I tried a straight Lapsang Souchong yesterday so I was able to ID it out of the rest of the blacks in this black blend. In Russian Caravan Black is Lapsang Souchong, Keemum and Assam fine tippy golden flower orange pekoe. This black blend is mega rich, amber mellow, smooth, astringent, smokey, woody and earthy. Gorgeous tea too!

Though, despite liking a good dark pu’er, I found this black blend too rich for me. I’m not a huge black tea drinker, but I’m happy to of tried it!

A delicate white chai with a good, moderate level of spice! The white tea, shou mei, was also a good choice as the white tea base was strong enough to hold its own against the chai spices. What I like about this chai is the use of lemongrass – often lemongrass is too much, but here it adds just enough, mixed with the hint of creamy coconut, to add a bit of freshness, like fresh snow.

I am slow at getting back to this one. I took my wife to the doctor (nothing serious) and am just now getting back to trying to get this one right. So rebooting, I used 1 1/2 tsp and 12 oz of just off boiling water and steeped for one minute. Yeah, this is much improved with no bitterness. I do think 2 minutes might bring out a little more of the flavors. I expected cocoa based on the wet leaf scent, instead I got nice notes of leather wrapped in light smoke. It is slightly spicy with some pepperiness. There is also some earthy/woodsy hints mingled in. Based on the cost – just under $10/3 oz, this has way more depth than expected. This is not Zhu Rhong or Golden Tips but it isn’t competing with the big dogs. I feel comfortable recommending it as a really good value everyday Yunnan.

I could not find this on the website. I have contacted Simple Loose Leaf to see if this is still available. So no picture and no product detail. Actually no real review yet. This is more about being consistent. I normally use a 10-12 oz mug. I had the bright idea this morning I would use a 5-6 oz cup instead. That would be fine had I adjusted the amount of leaf and/or the steeping time. So one scoop of leaf equivalent to about 2 tsp and a 3 minute steep is way too much for this little cup. So its dark, strong, and bitter. I can tell it had some nice smoky/chocolate notes but they are overcome. A packet of Splenda in such a tiny cup is just as bad of an idea. Sure it softens the bitterness but now it tastes like bottled tea. Who needs it that sweet? Time to reboot my day. I owe this tea a better review. I mean its Yunnan tea!

I know this feel. Sometimes things just don’t go right and it’s no fault of the tea. Next time, it will be beautiful!

Well that was really fast! Simple Loose Leaf got back to me almost instantly. So I have updated the product info and included a pic.

Sami Kelsh, I am just happy to know we have enough experience to understand when its our fault.

Splenda is tricky, a little bit goes a long way

First tasting note from the traveling decaf tea box teas! I am not usually a fan of black teas, but I love this!!! This is what I wanted every single 52 Teas blend that had the word cotton candy in the title to taste like! I added sweetener to this and it was a caramelly, vanilla dream!

There are a number of flavors that develop in this cup, but I especially love the subtle sweetness that shines through, it really appeals to my sweet tooth. I’ve been trying very hard to avoid added sugar lately and instead prefer to enjoy teas that have a natural sweetness to them. Also immediately noticeable about this tea are the floral notes the magnolia contributes, they are much more subtle than other floral teas. Jasmine is a much more commonly found ingredient in scented teas, but I find that it is oftentimes overwhelming, reminding me more of potpourri than tea. I’m glad to see that magnolia falls into the softer category of floral teas, I think that it may appeal to those of you who wish to find a floral tea to enjoy, but have found other types off-putting.

I love the scent of magnolia. We have 2 trees in our yard! Interesting to imagine it as part of a tea :)

A re-steep of this proved not-at-all bitter since I watched my time more closely. Unfortunately, all the vanilla has gone out of it. Le Sigh. There’s still the base though, so there’s that.
