SIPDOWN! Thanks to LiberTEAS for this sample!

Aww, here’s another one I let sit too long. Very little flavor left in this. Too bad. Again, I’ll just give this the current average rating here on Steepster.

The leaves were interesting as there were quite a few bits of twig in there. I haven’t seen that before. It was probably 30% twigs and 70% leaves. Now if only I knew what it tasted like. :( I’m a bad swap buddy.

This is the first time I taste this tea. A very herbal flavor, with a beautiful scent. I would recommend it for an afternoon snack.

I love this tea. I’ve never bought it but it’s my no. 1 choice at one of my local tea houses (in Portugal). It’s very fresh, and as with most teas I drink it unsweetened.

One of my favorite teas from Gorreana, I usually use it to make my own azorean blend. Strong, but not bitter flavour.

I just tore into this wonderful little drink a moment age.Dry leaf smell made me hungry. I’m not proficient in cooking spices to recognise what it was; a sweet minty smell. Red brown color. Wet leaves didn’t unfurl much, stemmy with pieces.First drink caught me off gaurd, so smooth yet rich. The maltiness, which reminded me of red wine, stood out.A wisp of smoke was present along woth a minty sweet/sour I felt in my outer jaws.Full body yet light and airy. I went ahead and steeped a second time and was glad I did. It may have lost too much for some of the more experienced drinkers, but you will hear no complaints from me. The malt eroded away to even sweeter notes. Something else about this drink; it’s very thirst quenching-no astringency. I have to agree with a post I saw (spoiler) from TeaEqualsBliss where she said it was ‘juicey’. Thanks Pureleaf for this one. I only wish I had enough to drink it all day. That’s OK, it’s going on my wish list. Yummy for my tummy.

Thank you LiberTEAS for this great sample!

These dark and full leaves produce a very nice cup of tea!

Smooth, slightly creamy and even a touch of roasted nuts. This tea is definitely on the lighter side, which is a great alternative to a bolder and more astringent breakfast tea. I find this tea could be enjoyed throughout the day, because of it’s more mellow tone.

I had this sent to me by Gorreana after they caught wind of me whining about it on the SororiTEA Sisters page. What I didn’t expect was to receive so much of the stuff. In short, I adore this pekoe. It has a character quite like a Darjeeling OP but without the spicy overtones. That could be a good or bad thing, depending on your preference. I found it to be very balanced, sweet, and barely bitter.

A wonderful Orange Pekoe. Nice, medium-bodied, bright flavor. Sweet, honey-esque tones. Definitely not your grocery store variety Orange Pekoe!

This one is a goodie!

Wonderful rich flavour. Light and clean, moreso than most black teas.
The estate where it’s grown is very impressing.

Pretty good for a bagged black tea…satisfying, semi-bold, not too shabby at all :) Backlogging from yesterday…

I am drinking tonight what I guess is this same tea, only a bagged version of it. I prefer the loose leaf, but this is still pretty good as a bagged tea. A strong savory tone to this … more so than I noticed with the loose leaf. It is almost broth-y, but then I brewed it strong.

Nice, but as I said, the loose leaf is better.

Awesome! This is Hysson? I had a really REALLY bad Hysson in the past, so bad that it made me grimace when I received this Hysson… I was worried that this would be just as horrible as the last. Boy was I wrong!

This is delightful. Really delightful. Sweet, hints of apple-y sweet/tartness and a roasted nut taste in the distance. Light grassy taste, very light. A very rich and almost creamy kind of texture to it. Really, really good.

TeaEqualsBliss

Ironically I had the same wonder…as I, too, had a back Hysson experience in the past but I agree this one is GRAND :)

ms.aineecbeland

We have all had bad experiences with tea; mine was with a Jasmine Green tea and I have yet to try another. That being said, no Hysson experience as yet. Not sure what Hysson is. Don’t mean Hiccups ;-).

I think I am being ribbed and fell for it. I have been warned enough about posting etiquette. Thanks.

Maybe the tea you had before is a Hyson tea? http://bodzablog.freeblog.hu/files/hyson%20aj%C3%A1nd%C3%A9k.jpg. Which is very different from a Hysson tea, as this tea is made by Gorreana in the Azores and Hysson is just the name of their green tea, while Hyson is a Chinese company.

LiberTEAS

@Matt Gelowitz: No, I actually had a Hysson green tea, not from Gorreana, but, from another company (not Hyson company).

Canary

Hmm, I see. I was under the impression that Hysson was a Gorreana specific brand name, and not a type of green tea. Sorry about that.

LiberTEAS

OK… scratch my previous comments. When I first received this tea from Gorreana, I thought it was the same tea as Young Hyson, which is a Chinese green tea. So, when I said “this is Hysson?” I was referring to my experience with Young Hyson, but not Hyson from Hyson Tea Company. I probably thought that Hysson was the same as Young Hyson, since the names are so similar, and I must have wrongfully thought that Hysson was merely Gorreana’s name for their tea since it is technically grown in a different region than the classic Young Hyson. My mistake.

Too many Hys(s)ons!!!

While the Orange Pekoe and Pekoe black teas from Gorreana are quite similar with their deep flavors, this one is lighter in character. It is still strong enough to take milk, which I prefer. I quite like it, but it stands out less in my mind than Gorreana’s other black offerings. It is not flowery or spicy, which is a good thing in my eyes. I’ll add more detailed notes next time I have a cup.

What a fantastic tea, from Portugal no less! I was very excited to try this European tea – I didn’t even know it existed until recently – and I was not disappointed. It is robust, rich, and flavorful. It is highly reminiscent of The Simple Leaf’s excellent Mountain Malt tea, but doesn’t become bitter when steeped for more than 3 minutes. I don’t feel that the flavor is lacking in any way.

It is great on ice as well, using the method I described in my previous post about Taylor’s of Harrogate’s Ntingwe Kwazulu.

Shipping took quite a long time, but they included an extra tea for me, so it’s all good! I will definitely order more in the future.
