I really wanted to love this one. It smells exactly like a red apple Jellybelly jellybean; definitely apple & cranberry, with some elderberry. I’m normally wary of apple in tea blends, because usually it’s just there to be a fruit-ish filler, and doesn’t really go, but this is apple forwards and I like apple, so I had hopes I’d found a cider analogue. Unfortunately, although it’s a super awesome shade of pink and delicious smelling, all it tastes like is hibiscus with a dash of rosehips. Could’ve been so much more; wasn’t.

This is better hot but honestly a solid mint tea any way. It’s got a clear and crisp menthol that pairs nicely with the touch of umami from the green tea base. It’s refreshing and just an all around nice tea.

Had this iced while enjoying some cheese. The two paired really well.

Despite being a hot cup of tea, this was very cool and refreshing. It’s better hot than what it cools but it’s a pretty solid tea, especially given it only cost $1.

Been steeping this throughout the day with honey. It was quite minty at first and now I think I’m mostly drinking hot water and honey but I keep resteeping the leaves anyways.

Thank you very much VariaTEA for the share – I do love trying Genmaichas from other companies, but I think this was actually the only tea from the three Dollar Tea Club samples you gave me that I honestly didn’t like. It was weird because it had the toasty rice note I enjoy in a Genmaicha and that was actually pretty strong as well, but the finish was sort of eggy and sulphurous and I couldn’t figure out why. It was kind of icky though, and I didn’t like how that taste lingered in the back of my throat..

drank Bubblegum by Dollar Tea Club

Sipdown (798)!

Another share from VariaTEA – and definitely something that interests me!

I really love the idea of bubble gum teas but have yet to find one that I’ve really been happy with. I find that they often are too tart/hibiscus forward or apple forward without enough bubblegum pay off, or they have the gumballs blended in for visual but the taste is flat and doesn’t reflect the impactful visual…

I was pretty into this one, though it definitely has a sharper hibiscus note that does fall into that first bucket of disappointing aspects about bubble gum blends. I always wonder if people use hibiscus in blending bubble gum teas for the colour of it or if it’s more for body – surely people don’t actually believe that bubble gum is tart like that!? After the hibiscus top note kind of subsides, there is a quality about the main body of the sip that does remind me of bubble gum though – very sweet, sugary and slightly fruity. It’s so close to being what I want, but doesn’t quite land on the right flavour. However, as the tea cooled I did think that flavour element was getting a bit more strong and noticeable, and the tartness that the sip begins with seemed to be mellowing slightly.

It was an overall enjoyable cup, and not a half bad attempt at a bubble gum tea! However, it still doesn’t get me where I want to go – but at least it took me part of the way. Thanks for sharing VariaTEA!

Iced Latte Sipdown (325)

Dollar Tea Club has been using a picture of my iced latte as their advertisement on Facebook for a while now. They keep getting asked about my recipe and some people have found me on Instagram to ask the same. Consequently, Dollar Tea Club sent me a large bag of this tea to walk people through the recipe. So that’s what I did. Now I have a whole story, profile highlight and post on Instagram about how to make my latte. Check those out here: https://www.instagram.com/s/aGlnaGxpZ2h0OjE3OTc0NjQwNzg1MzU4MTU3?igshid=iocinubwix90&story_media_id=2501185104118810213

With that said, this tea was never a favorite. It’s fine but it’s sort of mediocre quality black tea and sprinkles. There isn’t much flavour beyond that so I don’t actually want the full bag. Thankfully I’ve been putting together a TTB and that seemed like a good place to toss this tea. Hopefully others will enjoy it or get to experiment with iced lattes like I did!

Iced Latte Sipdown (269)

I got this from the Dollar Tea Club subscription again and I debated about putting it straight into my swap box but instead decided to make an iced latte.

At first, it didn’t taste like much but after sitting for a little bit, it started to taste like sprinkles. Sprinkles and vanilla cake batter. I’m into it and while it’s not the best take on birthday cake I’ve ever had, it’s good. I wouldn’t be mad if it showed up again…and seems like it might be since Dollar Tea Club liked the picture of this iced latte on Instagram and has suggested sending me a full size bag in order to have me do a step-by-step photo guide.

Aww poop. This just reminded me I didn’t order from Adagio during my birth month so I missed a chance at their secret “Birthday” tea.

Do you know any good (and available) birthday cake teas? I’m a sucker for birthday cake flavor and I can’t seem to find a bunch.

VariaTEA

This one isn’t bad though not my favourite since I find it can be a bit hot and miss. Otherwise it’s hard to say since my favourite Birthday Cake tea was made by Butiki which is obviously no longer available and I know 52 Teas had good ones but they’re not available either. If I think of one though, I’ll let you know.

I had never heard of the Adagio birthday thing! Too late for this year, but I will have to check it out.

Sipdown (295)

I wanted an easy sipdown this morning so I reached into my Sipdown Box of single servings and pulled out the first tea I touched. This was that tea.

It is sweet but also a bit astringent. It is nothing special so while it was tolerable while I had it, this was a welcome good bye.

This smelled really good while steeping and then my sister turned the timer off and I oversteeped it. The first sip was cake-y and great. However as the tea cools, the tannins are coming out and this is less awesome. It has potential but (1) it is finicky with steeping and (2) is best when hot.

Thank you VariaTEA for the share! I’m excited to try these teas from Dollar Tea Club; I’ve heard such mixed things about the quality but the concept and price are certainly intriguing! This was interesting because it neither tastes spiced in any way or of bourbon at all – unless the bourbon is more meant to be bourbon vanilla!? Because what this did taste like was a sweet and creamy rooibos. Not bad tasting at all but a little bit unremarkable, and not matching to the name…

Thanks for sharing, though!

This did not seem promising when I opened it and it lacked the actual gum balls that Necessiteas’ bubble gum tea had. It also smelled a bit off. I just did not think it would achieve the same bubble gum flavour I enjoyed in the Necessiteas blend.

Steeped this had the classic hibby redness and a whole lot of hibby flavour. Hibiscus and waxiness. I am not digging this all that much. Hopefully Roswell Strange can make the last serving of this work for her.

This is a lovely fruity tea with notes of stone fruit and tropical papaya. I can’t say I taste the lime leaf but I do think it still makes a great iced cup. The black tea is slightly malty so the tea was thicker than many fruity black teas I’ve consumed lately. Unfortunately it wasn’t very smooth because there is also an acidity and a lot of tannins. It benefits from a touch of sweetener to bring out the fruit notes.

drank Paris Blossom by Dollar Tea Club
2955 tasting notes

I got my dollar tea club teas in the mail yesterday and want to try and review them in the next few days.

This one has a ridiculous name. There is nothing about blossom in here unless they are referring to all the flower petals they added to bulk this up (adds no flavour, though). There is nothing floral at all.
I also don’t like almond so I can’t say I enjoyed this “almond tart” rooibos. I don’t get pastry or tart, just marzipan/sweet almond and some typical rooibos minerally notes. If this has been called almond rooibos or marzipan rooibos I’d have given it a pass because at least I knew what flavour it was supposed to be. Since they named this paris blossom, I can only assume they were going for something to do with France or a floral profile.

Flavors: Almond, Honey, Marzipan, Mineral, Nutty, Sweet, Wood

From SkySamurai! Thanks so much. At first I was thinking “Eww, licorice is not my thing at all.” BUT this is a pleasant enough flavor for me. It’s licorice but it’s sweet and unique. Definitely not a flavor I’ve had before in a tea, so it’s interesting. Though it’s also impossible for me to describe.

Mastress Alita’s sipdown challenge Wednesday, March 17th: St. Patrick’s Day Tea #1

Oh lord how I forgot this is NOT an “Irish Breakfast” tea.  It’s a green tea.  With bergamot.  And sprinkles.  The sprinkles are cute anyway!  And into the steeper it goes.  Then as I’m drinking it, I realize this is actually very delicious.  The bergamot is lovely on this mild gunpowder base, and then the sprinkles enhance with sweetness.  I’m actually going to raise the rating from 74. This is a sample but I wouldn’t mind having more around.    Next time a sipdown.

Mastress Alita

I very rarely like berg mixed with green tea. I think I’d be less offended if they just named this something else since “Irish Breakfast” in my head is definitely a straight black blend!

tea-sipper

Yep, this definitely needs a different name.

tea-sipper

oh and happy birthday! I haven’t had a chance to read tasting notes today…

Leafhopper

I agree, the name is a bit misleading.

Thanks so much again for that lovely package of teas, SkySamurai! I’ve actually somehow never heard of this company before. I’m not sure if this was reblended differently or something because the description sounds mostly different from the resulting flavor. My blend is a silky coiled green tea with cornflowers and cute shamrock sprinkles. The flavor is mostly bergamot. The description for the tea mentions bergamot but also chocolate, coffee and vanilla. I don’t think I want chocolate and coffee in a bergamot blend (other than that awesome chocolate bergamot Lupicia tea I love so much). So I’m glad I’m mostly tasting bergamot, but it isn’t the tastiest of bergamots, but also not the worst. The green tea would probably have been delicious without the added flavors — I couldn’t really tell through the bergamot. With the right bergamot, this could be a great blend, but this wasn’t bad. Just leave the other flavors out of the bergamot, please.

This tea is amazing! It’s one of the few teas that both my husband and I really, really enjoy. I was put off by a twig falling out of my scoop, but the taste makes up for the odd appearance. You can definitely taste the marshmallows, chocolate, and a little bit of smokey campfire. The campfire is so delicate in there – it doesn’t overpower the other flavors as I’ve found in other teas. It’s just really really good. Tasted 01.2019

Smells nice and orange-y with a hint of chocolate. The smell is super promising, but the taste doesn’t meet expectations.

Steeped 3.5 minutes (recommended steep time is 2-3 minutes). I was worried that I made it too strong (I really don’t like strong teas) so I diluted it with some more water and hoped for the best that it hadn’t turned bitter. It tasted like wood, maybe a campfire? A bit smokey? I asked my husband to try it as well – he brewed it for a shorter time period and had the same conclusion r/t the taste. Tasted 12-2018.
