Dammann Freres advent calendar. Day… 4ish? Though I’m actually having it on the 11th of December, so whoops.
On the plus side though I have gone through the backlog and am (mostly) keeping up. This advent calendar stuff is hard when you work nights and the days change up on you mid shift.
Dry this really smelled a lot like cherry candy flavoring. Once steeped I get what resembles apple cinnamon. It’s so fun how these things change with nothing but the addition of hot water. Though there is orange in the ingredient list, I don’t get any here. Just mostly that cinnamon with apple and then a vague creaminesss that I will assume is from the vanilla.
What a cozy Christmas tea! I was worried about liking it since greens usually aren’t the first tea I reach for, but it is surprisingly full bodied and comforting – I don’t normally think of greens as a winter tea but it works here.
A refreshing break from the citrus, really. And quite good plain – I will have to keep this in mind if I do place a Dammann freres order in the future.
Preparation
Day 10 on the advent calendar.
I think this will be the first green tea of theirs I tried. Still haven’t gotten around to the Christmas tea vert from day 5-ish. I also wasn’t as careful with the water temperature as I should have been. These teas don’t seem to be too fussy about that though (maybe because they are higher quality leaf?).
Dammann loves them some orange flavoring. Fortunately I think they do it really well. This one is no exception, and may even be that much better with the vegetal green base. The spices (mostly cinnamon) are confined to the smell for me but I kind of like the duality there. It’s fun to drink something and smell something totally different (albeit complimentary).
So yes, a variation on a theme, well done, and I’m glad to have tried it.
Preparation
having a last cup of this one tonight. I did a little bit of cleaning up my cupboard tonight in terms of getting things organised. we’re not fully moved in yet, but we’re having 10 or so ppl over on friday to just chill and have food so i need to get at least a few more things out of the way. Given that a few tea friends imploded my cupboard, i thought i could semi see if i could make my goal (since it wasn’t orders that did it!!) by “removing” the samples from my count of teas. At least in that way i could see if in theory i could hit my goal. Soooo here’s where we’re at:
195 teas in my cupboard.
75 samples
Fake Cupboard: 120 (with a few inbound…)
Oh, sounds like fun! :D
And 120 sounds much more reasonable! I wonder what I’d be at if I removed things that I personally purchased…
Huh. So out of 169 different teas, only 115 of them were purchased by me. :P That makes me feel better. IT’s not my fault!!! Hahah
So that’s roughy for me since things like the BBB box I don’t count as samples. Anything later than 3-4 cups is not a sample in my count. Heh
Yeah, that makes sense. My actual-fake cupboard is probably higher than if I count things that are 2-3 or more cups! Most of it is shoved in a sample box looking messy and awful, while the rest are organized very nicely so it’s just more motivation to drink those ones down ASAP!
i’ve started tossing the things i don’t like in to my swap box more readily now… just means you guys have more to root through in case there are things you guys like.
Yeah, it makes sense to swap what you can! I only toss the things that have been passed around a bit and I don’t think anyone really wants, or it’s just not worth keeping around to try…
I’m hoping we can swing by soon. Maybe even this weekend!
Cavo, like DavidsTea Cherry Cola? :D I still have 10g of that and I don’t think I can foist it off on anyone, unless the SSTTB and the next recipients want to try it.
…feeling guilty for not working on sipdown tonight, i went with at least one of the teas that i want to work on getting through by July 1st. I’m still hoping that i can work through that part of my goal, even if i’m not likely to meet my cupboard size goal with all the swaps and purchases coming in the next little while. I still really like this one, especially as it’s a decent rooibos option for when i want something a little less black :)
Final Count: 129 (though there are like 6 swaps inbound, the BBB and 4 orders lol)
had a cup of this tonight while doing my best NOT to order more tea. Yunnan Sourcing, Herbal Infusions, Damn fine tea…i’m looking at you! Thanksfully, DFT has lots left of the special tea, HI has poor service and Yunnan Sourcing won’t disappear on me..so i think i’ve managed to curb my impulse. I feel like i REALLY need to try and last longer than a week in to March :)
Still enjoying this one as a caffeine free option, though i DO like the black base better. Likely won’t be a restock but it’d been nice to have :)
wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..last tea of the night with my freshly baked banana bread that my other half made for me while i was testing. lots of things to do tomorrow so likely not as many teas will be had, but still a VERY productive day/weekend today!
Final Count: 152
Figured i should cut back on the caffeine tonight/this morning? though who knows why. It doesn’t seem to be affecting me either way and either way i need to be up all night lol. I’m glad my other half is getting sleep though. I suspect i’ll be close to useless tomorrow…but here’s hoping i can get a mid morning nap in…maybe? i hope? still enjoying this one a lot…just wish it was a little more toffee like tonight!
cup of this while finishing up the first season of fringe. I’d totally forgotten about the crazy guy who believes he’s spock. So good. lol. Packed for tomorrow and checked in for my flight so now i just have to sleep, get up and eat, drink some tea and then head to the airport. Going to be a nice relaxing sunday!
Ok, the last thing I need is a new series to watch! Fringe is on my list though. I was told it was like the modern x-files. I do miss scully and mulder’s chemistry!
It’s different from X-files, which i watched and loved back in the day. The interaction between walter, his son, olivia etc is just as good, though different :) now that it’s over, i’m working my way through all 5 seasons, since at the time of airing i stopped after season 2 so that i would have something to buy and watch when it ended lol
made this in latte form tonight for a relaxing cup of tea before trying to get an earlish night in. I’m going to try and go in to work tomorrow so i need to rest up and make sure i get as much sleep as possible. I quite like this as a latte, though i’ll need to try it with the black version as well to see which is tastier!
Another evening, another cup of rooibos blend. I’m most annoyed to at I didn’t get a day today to bum around drinking tea but I am greatful that we have power. Some will be without until Christmas!! Count your blessings right? We’ve extended our home to anyone in need, but so far most of our friends have power so thank goodness for that. I’m certainly not leaving the house tomorrow so yay for being able to work from. Home!
Still enjoying that I have this cup as a rooibos option. It’s not the. Worlds greatest but it’s good enough :)
…this is becoming a habit. Had a cup of this tonight while playing “All things big and small” the favoured game of my other half. He’s indulged me in playing pandemic a few times in the recent future so we try to change things up a bit here and there :)
I’m stupidly tired from my long day today and i am dying to sleep. No rest for the wicked though as i still have another hour or so with testing before i can sleep. I just hope we wrap things up sooner rather than later. Glad i have my tea if nothing else. :)
nom nom nom. I really need to try this as a latte just for funsies. Still loving the option for non black blends so i’m glad i got this one. At this rate though, i’ll be finished up the 100g in no time flat :)
I picked this one up with my order of DF teas because a)i love caramel/toffee type teas and b)i need more caffeine free options in my cupboard. I figured even if i hated it, there are lots of folks here who like to try “fancy french teas” lol The good news? While it does taste a bit like rooibos in the background, it’s still a sweet, creamy, caramel like tea. Not overly so, and i prefer the black version that i also picked up, but this is great for the times when i don’t want caffeine! WIN! (especially at a mere 8 euros for shipping..)
Err… I been thinking about ordering from these guys. Wasn’t sure how it would go when credit card meets foreign currency.
I was going to say use paypal….also “These guys” = cadeaux vendomme not the. Actually DF site :) the one YYZ told us about!
The dry tea smells like the orange raspberry peach juice you can get in the grocery store. It would probably make a great iced tea.
Orange, cherry and strawberry are the most apparent fragrances once brewed. After 4.5 min. in 10 oz, the resulting brew is a nice blend of fruit and base tea. The fruit flavours balance each other, with the peach and cherry tempering tartness from the other fruit, and the orange adding a certain brightness while tempering the sweetness. The blood orange is well done and has notes from the blood orange compote from theJaffa cakes I had recently. This is a really nice fruity black that would be great in summer!
Dammann Advent Calendar, Day 10
I remember this one from last year, and I remember wishing it was a black base. Fortunately for me, I don’t really get a bubblegum scent to this one. Maybe a whif of bubblegum from a distance, but when I really smell it I smell the orange and spices and a bit of cream.
I still enjoy this one, and I still wish it was on a black base. I think the creamy orangey gingerbready-ness of it would be so well complemented by a hearty black. Ah well, one less tea to have to stock. :)
Preparation
Oh, duplicate Dammann names and shifting descriptions!
I checked the website and I see that Flocon d’Épices is 1) now available in bulk (not tinned) and 2) has a different description than it originally did. Now, it really does seem like these are the same flavorings on different bases, in which case I suppose my wish is granted.
Also, they no longer sell Noël en Alsace, which was a duplicate of Flocon d’Épices (but available in bulk when “Flocon” was only available in an expensive tin). I guess they decided they liked the latter name better.
Dammann advent calendar, day 10. Another one I haven’t tried! I honestly thought I might run into a lot of them that I had tried before given the fact that I recently acquired a lot of Dammann teas, but this is great because it’s a lot of teas I wasn’t sure about enough to order 50-100g of, but now I get to try them anyway.
I didn’t really know what was in this one but I think I thought it was some kind of green chai. Then I looked it up on Dammann’s site and saw that it is supposed to be gingerbread and orange?? Yum. The scent of the dry sachet was super orangey and sweet, and made my mouth water! It smelled really good. I think the gingerbread came out more in the scent of the steeped tea, although its not exactly gingerbread right off. Maybe it’s just the interaction with the orange. I quite enjoy the flavor, although this is another tea that I would be happier to have on a black base. I guess I’m just not that into flavored greens unless they are pure fruit or floral. I just think the gingerbread flavor would be more prominent with a black base. It is sweet, very orangey, and lightly spiced. There is also a nice creaminess to this one that grows as I sip it.
Haha this is one of those teas that I start out ambivalent about but then really grow to really enjoy it by the end.
Preparation
Day 10.
I said the same thing last year. Juicy fruit bubble gum. Ha ha. I don’t remember much of this one becuase I was in an intense meeting staying quiet, trying not to get noticed , shying away from eye contact and sipping my tea in fear.
The green tea base is very light. This tea is slightly floral. There is a definite fruity flavour that translates to bubble gum for me. I think I noticed some sweet candied citrus in there somewhere.
I got me through the meeting in one peice without being noticed. Big plus!
Preparation
Day 10!
I feel like with every Dammann tea I review, I find myself thinking this smells/tastes like bubble gum. That’s the scent I get from this one. Delicious fruity, juicy, bubble gum.
This tea tastes like candied oranges. I was expecting it to be more tart based on the description on the tea. I am tasting sweet candied oranges and cream. There may also be a bit of candied ginger flavour in here too, but I do not get gingerbread at all. The sencha is buttery and creamy, but does not overshadow the flavouring. It is blended perfectly. This one is definitely a great fruity tea.
Preparation
Advent calendar 2013, day 9.
I love Earl Grey. LOVE it. Mostly the EGC varietals, but I have to admit this is probably the most excited I’ve been about a tea so far, since I kind of know what level of flavoring I like and have had enough other versions that I could really do a good comparison.
The results were disappointingly ‘eh’.
There is surprisingly little flavor from either the tea or the bergamot in this, despite following the recommended steep parameters. I’ve enjoyed all of Dammann’s other teas without additives but maybe that’s what is missing here? I guess I’ll give it a try….
Okay, with a bit of milk and sugar the bergamot peeks out but this is still a really lackluster tea base. It’s smooth, it’s just…barely there. I think Earls need a strong base to stand up to the bergamot.
So this one wasn’t too my taste. Still a good tea, just…I’ve had better Earl Greys for sure.
Preparation
Received this as a free sample from my Dammann Freres order.
At first the smell of the dry tea sachet was medicinal rooibos. I was a bit worried. Would Dammann blend their rooibos tea to just as delicious and exceptional as all the others?!?
The brewed tea tastes lightly of vanilla. It is not super vanilla to cover up the taste of the rooibos. It is vanilla that works with the rooibos. The rooibos is woody, but it is not medicinal or peppery tasting. It is creamy and the liquor is thick. I am not a huge rooibos, or vanilla tea, but Dammann did not disappoint (as usual) :)
Preparation
One of the days of the Dammann Freres Advent Calendar – I forget which one. I’m sure other commenters have noted it.
Yet again, I oversteeped this. Suggested brewing time: 5 minutes. Actual brewing time: 23 minutes. Ack!
It still tastes lovely though, and is a solid green mate. (Not an herbal, as the package lists it). Tastes very much like mate and lemon rind, although there is a weird cinnamon smell to it that’s a bit offputting.
I love other mate’s though, so this will stay out of my rotation. Having said that, I’ll definitely enjoy the energy boost it gives in the next hours or so!
Preparation
It must be the name, because the ingredients you and Lala have described don’t seem anything spectacular or out of the ordinary – but like I noted on her tasting note, this just seems really interesting! I guess this is just another example of how much impact a name or title really has…
