Recent Tasting Notes

From Martin, thank you!

I haven’t gotten much of a lemon note from this despite containing lemon peel, more a tone of it, and it’s mixed with a savory-tending-alkaline Chinese? sencha base that’s also toasty in flavor. It does swallow juicy which is satisfying. The ginger presents after the swallow and is very mild.

Because the base is so savory, it almost reminds me of a vegetable broth spiked with lemon juice. Something reminds me of mayonnaise?? Mixed with an almost sweet, toasty flavor and a juicy swallow, I’m left confused. I’ve had it while eating grapefruit both times to amplify the citrus. It’s an overall average green-herbal blend, for me at least. Martin seems to really enjoy it :)

The theme of this tea is ‘Almost.’

Flavors: Dry Grass, Ginger, Lemon, Smooth, Sweet, Toasty, Vegetable Broth

Martin Bednář

You are welcome! Well, last few sessions weren’t that great, maybe it’s age, maybe a bad mix (you got the rest I had)… but well, “mayo” isn’t expected flavour profile! :D

derk

I’m grateful to have some green teas right now (even those with surprise mayo impression) since I’ve been craving them. Come on, fresh harvest!

Martin Advent Day 24
I definitely get a lot of lemon along with the black tea. There’s also a bit of a floral aspect that I wish I could taste a little more. Not my favorite, but not bad!

Martin Bednář

I actually laughed when I saw that random.org selected this tea for 24th. The name in the winter.
I am glad that you liked it, though it wasn’t your “cuppa” :)

Martin Advent Day 17
This black tea is a bit too light and mildly flavored for my tastes. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, it just didn’t excited me. Just tastes like a plain, light black tea.

Martin Bednář

Yep, in this tea something is lacking. Something more bright than tea, the elderflowers weren’t bad, but something, maybe some citrus zest? I am not a blender though.

AJRimmer

Yeah maybe I should have tossed some flavor extract in!

Martin Advent Day 11
It’s been a busy few days, but I’ve been drinking my teas (well 1/4 of my advents at least…)! I must have brewed this improperly because it came out pretty bitter, but I covered that with some milk and sugar, and it was fine! Quite floral, but in a good way. The black tea is quite strong too and has a nice malty quality. It’s a pretty balanced tea. I like floral lattes!

Martin Bednář

To be honest, there weren’t any instruction on the pouch, so I couldn’t really provide any. I am glad you were able to save the tea anyway! :D

AJRimmer

Not your fault at all because I never follow steeping instructions out of laziness :P

SIPDOWN 12
Kind of sad sipdown. I took some and sent to California; and I had only one or two teaspoons left. So I took them today and brewed them. It was an interesting experience trying another tea company; while I think this is in matter of size similar to CuppaGeek. They are available on Etsy.

The result was good; a nice grassy green tea base, very smooth and enjoyable, followed with spicy hints from ginger, but not fiery at all! And all together well rounded with an nice, lemony feel as the citrus note. A well made, though for some maybe too simple and not that great. But I have liked it!

Again I get cup of warm, yet dry grass note, juicy, but not sour lemon taste and warming ginger which was again appreciated.

Smooth taste, everything so right and correct. I enjoyed today cup of this tea.

I prepared it as usual, two teaspoons for my 300 ml cup. As it is green tea, I have used bit colder water, tried close to 80°C, but haven’t measured as usual. Lazy me.

Although based on sight it isn’t the most precious sencha, it is a good base. Very smooth, noticeable in taste as a grassy flavour. I don’t think that freshly cut grass flavour would be necessary, this was maybe better. Ginger and lemon peel combination was great. Ginger wasn’t overpowering the taste for sure, but was noticeable, and lemon was like combined with honey. It was a bit on the sweet side, but not too sweet. It reminded me Halls Relief cough drops (ehm, sounds bad, but it wasn’t). I don’t really know if they are the same in the US, but I hope they are. We have different packages though. And we don’t use them against coughs.

The lemon was somehow juicy, but not sour at all, and as iced tea, it would be another delicious blend. But the weather says no, we had temperature drop to 15-18°C in the mornings, so no more iced/cold brews are needed.

Sounds delicious-both the tea and the weather. : )

Leafhopper

I’m also jealous of your cooler weather. It’s going to be another hot weekend here in Ontario, Canada.

Mastress Alita

This is the second week in a row we’ve been pushing the high 90sF… I’m so tired of this heat wave!

Martin Bednář

I wish you all coler weather soon!

SIPDOWN
A gift from the company and well, I think I would order it. It’s pretty nice tea for drinking now and then. As it was bottom of the pouch, it was bit dusty. So it was stronger than usual, just a little rose and rather lavender forward.

As there wasn’t much of rose, it was maybe bit better for me. I liked the lavender, but it wasn’t too strong in floral at all. It was like a black Assam with hints of the lavender-rose note. Those hints were just on spot. Liked it more than whole pouch, but it wasn’t intended that way, right?

While I wasn’t very impressed last time I had this tea about situation over here; it is not getting better — it is actually very, very bad recently.

And the tea…? I am way more satisfied with it. Yep, it isn’t top-notch tea; but I liked it for being that nice. It had quite nice body from Assam base, and today it was more into lavender than rose. But the rose was noticeable as well, mostly for the aroma which of course was bit soapy, but not in bad way! It was maybe too floral for some, including me, but I think I will drink it now or then, when I will have mood for something different than malty, strong blacks; I may offer it to family members, friends…

I am thinking about placing another order, this time to choose some, bit more autumn-winter flavours.

Well, this is tea I haven’t ordered, but they added it to shipment as thank you for an order, so I am saying THANK YOU Casablanca Tea Company!

Effective from 1st of September, face masks in public will be mandatory again in my country. Schools have to be prepared for distance learning. But nobody cares about those students who may not have some kind of computer or they have, but don’t have internet connection. It is really small percentage of pupils (mostly), but they exist. Usually some low-income families. Nobody cares.

Tea review down here:
My typical set-up for Casablanca teas, so two teaspoons for 3 and half minute in my 300 ml glass cup.

Although when dry lavender took most present position, when brewed it is mostly the base with rose. Smooth and nice, floral tea. The base which is same for all three blacks I have (I assume) is again quite malty and strong, but roses and lavender are adding the floral notes as expected. Overall it is bit more on sweet side, nothing extra complex, but those teas are simple flavoured and definitely great for summers when you don’t want anything to care about.

This sounds like the perfect summer tea-the time of year when you want your eating and drinking to be easy. : )

ashmanra

Our county is doing distance learning for the first six weeks but they are sending out 80 school buses which will serve as wifi hotspots. I do not know what provisions are being made for people who do not have a computer or laptop. I think after six weeks they will assess whether classrooms should open.

Youngest is at uni and has in person classes, though.

mrmopar

Stay masked up and be safe Martin!

Martin Bednář

White Antlers: Yeah, that sounds like a good combination!
ashmanra: Well, that’s at least something. Here they told the schools — be ready for distance learning. Everybody have to get access to school materials. But nobody cares how!
mrmopar: Thanks. Well, I think that travelling by train every day isn’t most clever thing to do, but if I have in person classes, there is nothing I can do with it.

I guess I will need another pouch of this tea. I think that says enough about this tea.

I took two teaspoons; and brewed quite light. It could be two, three minutes maximum.

It was so nicely smooth, no maltiness today. It was in taste quite floral — lavender; but as well some cooling effect, I don’t know what was the cause; and as well bit rough from the verbena. It was bit lemony as well.

As I said, great morning tea! :)

I had this tea two days ago actually, but Steepster wasn’t working for me back then and I was without internet connection during the weekend (wasn’t working and wasn’t at home too :) )

So, actually it won’t be that perfect tasting note as usual, but here is it:

It was better than Paris Afternoon, it was certainly less sweet. I wrote a review on their Etsy profile:

Great morning tea! The base is strong, but herbals are strong as well! Verbena adds nice earthy flavours, while lavender adds the floral notes. Overall it is smooth nad very nice cup of tea!

Well, I think I will kept it like that here as well and I will do another tasting note while drinking it again.

Verbena is highly under rated.

Sad SIPDOWN

Although I am not that impressed as I have hoped about this tea, it’s sad sipdown as it was actually pretty tasty today.

The leaf was quite broken as it was just some dust on bottom of pouch, but it made this tea more brisk and bold and it was actually better in opposite of elderflowers and elderberries which are in this blend as well.

Today, it wasn’t cloying sweet as previous brews, and I liked it more. Maybe the previous teaspoons were too heavy on flower side. I don’t know, but I will rate it bit higher than 78 as it had before this tasting note.

I should try more from them, but I guess it will happen after holidays, as I am bit short on money (and Cuppageek order ate again something from my thin account).

Canadian friends, I would be very happy to see some orders from you to this company. I want to see if I am obsessed with small businesses and unintentionally being biased. Haha.

I just went to check since I’m in Canada, but where is this shop in Canada? It has no address haha! I’ll check through their teas to see if anything intrigues me though.

Martin Bednář

Their ZIP seems to be V8X 3V5, I have ordered from Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CasablancaTeaCompany :)

Courtney

Ahh perfect. BC — close to me. :)

Martin Bednář

Good for you then :)

I have tried it again today, though it is “afternoon” tea, I had it in the morning.

I shaked a bit with the pouch, took three teaspoons and steeped bit longer, I think it could be around 5 minutes.

It was more tea-prominent, even bit bitter. But it was how I was expecting it :) Bold tea with baked bread notes, as I said, maybe bit bitter due to long steeping time. But elderflowers were nice and making it bit more sweet and floral, I noticed hints of lemon as well. It was much better than last time. 63 → 78 at least for now.

By the way, I copied reviews posted here to their Etsy profile and “wrote reviews” there as well. This is the answer I got:

“Hello Martin
I would like to thank you for taking the time to write such thoughtful reviews- I really appreciate it.
If you want to order any of our other teas I will send you one as a gift for any one you order- just send me a note as to what you would like to try

Thanks again
Dawn"

So, if I understand that right, if I place another order, I will get free tea?

Sounds like it to me.

White Antlers

Yes. You have to place an order to get your freebie tea but that is a nice gesture on Dawn’s part.

Martin Bednář

Thank you! I wasn’t sure as non-native speaker. :)

White Antlers

You did the very intelligent thing that a LOT of native speakers don’t ever do-you asked. : )

A new company from Canada (bought on Etsy, they had free shipping offer for some teas), so I took three 20 grams samples. Got one tea as thank you. I know it’s not great time to adding new teas as database is quite slow nowdays, but I couldn’t help myself :). This tea was actually what I was searching for and why I placed the order.

I have used two teaspoons for my 300 ml cup, steeped for around 3-4 minutes.

I was like hit with the sweetness of the tea, both aroma and taste. It was really on the sweet note, the base tea was very nice and bready, bit malty as well. I have hoped that lemon peel will make it bit on lighter side and more refreshing, but probably too little of it in this cup.

Wasn’t that bad, just too sweet for me (but I am tired and maybe my taste buds are bit out right now :D )

I slept three hours, maybe bit more, had long night shift and then was hot morning so I couldn’t sleep at all. But now, it is after thunderstorms and weather is nice.

But Steepster is so slow! And I hit like on many tasting notes, but it seems it haven’t saved. Anyone can post it to discussion?

I can’t post to discussion or fill in my profile.

Your tea sounds quite nice. Maybe the lemon peel would be more apparent if the tea was iced?

Mastress Alita

I can’t post to the discussion boards anymore either. I used to be able to, and now this account no longer can. I had to make a brand-new account called “mastressalitaclone” just to use the message boards, which is ridiculous. My Profile Information was also deleted (though I had a backup at least, just like I always write all my tea notes externally and have them backed up, too…)

Courtney

I’m always on the hunt for Canadian tea companies to try, so I’ll have to check this one out!

Martin Bednář

White Antlers: I will very probably give it a try
Mastress Alita: I have noticed that in discussion, I can access, but I can’t write. Hopefully it will be soon resolved including everything for you!
Courtney: Give them a try :) I think they are really small business, maybe the blends are prepared just before shipping. And their packaging is nice too!

Leafhopper

Yes, Steepster is slow for me as well, and I keep getting 504 errors. Ugh!

White Antlers

Me too with the 504 errors.

mrmopar

Slow here too Martin. Be sure and catch up on your rest!

Leafhopper

Steepster is still slow. I’m also not sure if my dashboard is being updated, as my review for Seaberry Spa is the last one I see and it’s almost a day old. Maybe everyone’s waiting for the site to stabilize before posting their reviews?

Mastress Alita

I know that is the case for me, Leafhopper. I have around 6 reviews still on my Steepster.txt and I’m not about to try posting them to the site right now due to how unstable and unusable it has been for me since the switchover. The site is slow to the point where I am having trouble even trying to catch up on my giant backlog of review reading, and I’m constantly interrupted with the 503/504s taking it back down again.

Martin Bednář

I think many of us actually do that Leafhopper. It is so unstable so often it’s down and you can’t post at all, while others wait till situation is better.
