1 TB for 450mL water, bare.

Tastes like mouldy leaves.

Second sip, I think I get some lemongrass … maybe.

Seriously, I wonder if I have a bad batch. This is nasty.

Steep time: 3 min. Water temp: 82. Rating: 0.

It’s got to be the ginseng. I have yet to find a flavor that meshes with it. Tastes like you’re licking a tree branch, doesn’t it?

I’m not going to rate this because I added a few goji berries, which I was so excited to find! Trying to up my vitamin C wherever I can. I’m enjoying this tea, it’s very fruity and I can taste the tea. However, it is giving me a serious case of cotton mouth.

3TB for 1 gourd, no sweetener at first. Rating: 90.

Loose tea at the Bulk Barn? Loose tea at the Bulk Barn? Well, all right, I’ll look into that. They carry a decent selection of unusual bagged teas, including some hard-to-find Stash blends, plus the usual groaning shelves of Celestial Seasonings. In the past, they’ve kept ghostly teabags, all very gossamer, in those transparent bins where light can ruin them. (Gah!) The new loose teas are also in transparent bins, but the bins have magnetic seals, so they shouldn’t get too stale, too fast.

Some of the new loose teas are quite pretty to look at, including this one. The greens of the mate leaves and the lemon grass are quite vibrant, and the yellow petals strewn throughout add some contrast.

Taste: a quite acceptable green mate that is NOT overpowered by the lemongrass. I’d expected this to be a mouthful-o-lemongrass and so only bought 40 cents worth to try. The mate is crisp and very green in taste, in-your-face leafy, and the lemongrass complements that nicely. The mate will get bitter if forgotten in the gourd while you go fold a load of laundry, but add some sweetener and fresh warm water and all is well again.

The bin I bought from is pretty fresh, and the mate offers a decent lift. Overall, a pleasant surprise.

I bought this tea on a whim and I really love it! My first time around I brew it a little too strong and ended up pouring it over ice and lemonade.

Let me tell you, it was AMAZING!

The tea itself pacts a punch with a tart pomegranate flavour and has this aromatic floral taste afterwards. Combined with lemonade, I can see it quickly becoming one of my summer favourites!

Bought this on a whim last time I was at the bulk barn. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this tea. I think it’s the artificial tropical taste that overwhelms me when I guess I was hoping for more of a coconut flavor. I don’t think I’ll be buying this again!

Bought this on a whim last time I was at the bulk barn. I have to say (as odd as it may be) that it taste like it came from the bulk barn, you know that scent that things from the bulk barn can sometimes take on? I was hoping it would be a little bit like Della Terra’s Orange Brulee oolong but not a chance! Defiantly will not be buying again!

The smell of this tea is absolutely amazing. Perfectly sweet and wonderful.

Bulk barn fail.
The lemon part was fine, but the “ginger” was most certainly not ginger, if you get my meaning. Or maybe that was the base throwing me off. Something was just not right. Plastic and garbage like in the flavour, not so much in aroma.
Backlog from Saturday here. Sorry I can’t remember more of the sickening details lol

drank Candy Cane Tea by Bulk Barn

I shared a pot of this tea with my friend, and we both agree, it’s very nice!!
Best had with a teaspoon of sugar, or else it’s a little to generic minty. Actually, the sugar brought out the black tea base just as much as it did the “candy cane” aspect.
I prefered it with a dash of milk. Yum.
Reminds me of DTs Read my lips. An excellent alternative methinks, only I’d add a dash of cocoa or sauce. or shnapps!! ohhhh yah that would be amazing on a cold winter night :P

When browsing for candy at Bulk Barn (best way to get munchies I swear), I found a sign in the tea section advertising this new addition to their tea lineup. I haven’t been overly impressed with most of their teas, but it smelled too delish to not bring home and try.

Since of course there are no brewing recommendations, I went for a 76 degree water, for 1.5 minutes.

The tea is sweet and doesn’t need sugar added. There are definite green notes there, as well as green, and something else that blends it all together. I guess that’s their mojito flavour. I’m drinking this one hot and it is nice, but I am actually really curious to try this one iced. I think it’ll bring out the mint and make it really pop. I just see it in a pitcher with ice cubes that have raspberries frozen in them for some reason.

For the cost, it is definitely worth giving a try. I got more than enough for at least twenty cups for just over two dollars.

Their prices are pretty crazy cheap. The black currant one is probably my fav from Bulk Barn.

Aha! I knew someone else I followed bought at Bulk Barn! I’ll have to look out for the black currant!

drank peppermint herbal by Bulk Barn

Pretty standard mint taste, probably similar to bagged blends.
Kinda bland and not as strong or sweet as other peppermints.
Like other Bulk Barn teas, this is very cheap, so it is definitely worth the price. And probably cheaper than bagged varieties.

So lately I have been thinking about making some iced tea, but I have a dilemma. Making iced tea uses up a lot of tea leaf, and it steeps for so long that I don’t usually try to resteep it overnight. So I’d rather not waste money and quality tea all the time.
I’d looked at some cheap options and then I visited bulk barn for some other stuff when I saw this genmaicha. It is about $4.50 (?)/100g! With a price like that I could really care less how old the tea is or how big the leaves are. ;)

After purchasing some I brewed it hot at home. It didn’t taste bad, but it wasn’t really knocking my socks off either. Mostly I taste the rice, but at least there was no bitterness. (I used a gaiwan and steeped 45s, 45s, 1m)

So next naturally I scooped some into my ice tea pitcher, gave it a bit of hot water to help the rice steep, then added a lot more iced water to fill it up.

Now I’m getting to taste it for the first time (about 18 hours later). As I expected there is a nice toasted smell to the iced tea. Drinking it, the rice and green tea taste good together, and again there is no bitterness. I would like to taste more of the green tea, but knowing how cheap this is I can’t complain.

Overall a good iced tea, I will probably buy more when I run out of tea leaves.

This is another sample from Krystaleyn. Thanks again! It is my last sample from her, sad face.

Another very interesting tea. I know it says mango but really it feels more like peach to me. I get a hint of coconut right after the oolong. The oolong is sweet and again reminds me of rocks. Maybe my tasters are off today. I’d say it’s earthy but I find no vegetal or moist hints in it. Yay, more oolong! Thanks again.

I cannot believe how quickly you two blasted through these samples! I definitely have tons of yours left to go. Pitfalls of having too much tea around, I think? (I just looked and I think the only review I didn’t see was of a teabag I sent – or did I not end up sending one because I was over the weight limit?? I don’t remember!)

Kittenna

Also yes, not all oolongs have the vegetal flavour, and this would be one that doesn’t. I did get a lovely oolong aftertaste with this one though, if I recall correctly.

Missy

You are right there is a tea bag! That’s part of the beauty of sharing cups. I can brew 2 teas at one time. Score! What’s an oolong aftertaste?

Kittenna

Ummmm, I can’t describe it except as an oolong aftertaste XD

I find that oolongs, whites, greens all have a similar lingering aftertaste. It may in fact be the same one, but based on the tea I’m drinking I associate it as the aftertaste of a specific tea. It’s just…. good. And lingers. Like, really lingers, often.

Missy

I’ve had a few after tastes but I generally move on to another tea pretty quickly. I’ll have to let that after taste develop some time and examine it.

drank pomegranate white by Bulk Barn
1184 tasting notes

Smells like pomegranate, but there is no fruit, I do see rose petals and probably marigold petals.
1st steep: It is alright, I get a pomegranate/blueberry taste mostly. It still smells wonderful.
2nd steep: 95degrees, 4minutes, this is a weaker version of the first steep
I put the rest in the fridge to try cold—-it is alright, Pom Power from Davids is definitely better.
As Indigobloom and Aisling of tea mentioned, it does leave a dry cottonmouth taste in your mouth as an aftertaste.

This was actually very fruity and tropical smelling! Very good for coming from the Bulk Barn.
1st steep: very fruity, I mostly get mango and pineapple with a little coconut, with the oolong flavour in the background.
2nd steep: 95degrees, 4minutes, same fruity taste but more oolong flavour coming out, not the best oolong base, but still alright.
There is no fruit bits in here though, just flower petals, so I found that kind of weird.
But really, at this price, it is fairly worth it…..35g for $1
