Sipdown 39

It’s rare that I am in the mood for a plain peppermint tea, but the feeling struck at work the other day. This was fine- pretty much peppermint, but not necessarily the best version I have ever had.

drank Kolkata Chai by Bloom Teas

Sipdown 159-2021

I had been putting off drinking this, but a nice spicy chai sounded nice (and it was the only option I had that fit the bill at work). I was actually quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this blend. The bit of sugar I added complimented the spiciness of the red peppercorns and ginger nicely. Overall, a really nice chai blend that I would consider purchasing again.

I actually don’t mind this! The cherry is pretty candy-like (reminds me of a cherry jolly rancher), with a nice strong floral that comes off as more jasmine than rose.

Sipdown 157-2021

This was better than I expected. It has a very mild bergamot flavor, with a sweet candied lemon being the most prominent citrus. Not something I need to have again, but not bad.

drank Workout Matcha by Bloom Teas

Sipdown (1456)!

Well, I am officially completely finished going through my Bloom samples. This one was a bit mediocre – the matcha isn’t super high quality and combined with both the maca and the guarana there was a bit of a swampy quality to the taste mixed with a more grainy texture. I do appreciate the little perk up of energy from polishing it off, but it felt more like a task to do so than a pleasant cup of tea.

drank Cocoa Cabana by Bloom Teas

Sipdown (1460)!

The second tea I’ve steeped up while working on tasting notes tonight. Or, in this case, more like whisked up. It’s nice but a little thin/watery. I know that I could have controlled that better since it was a preportioned single serve, but it’s hard to gauge how strong it might taste until you’ve already made it and there was no advertised serving size on the package. It’s a bit like the watery “ice rink” hot chocolate you’d get as a kid that was so hot it scaled your mouth and that was more for warmth than taste. The nicest thing about it is absolutely the finish – it’s very toasty and nutty and reminds me of very golden and well roasted macadamia nuts. I think it’s the maca in this powder. I didn’t expect that kind of finish to the cup at all but I’m loving it and it’s keeping me coming back for sip after sip much faster than the thin chocolate notes would have.

Nooooooooope. Kind of smells like feet? Really oily unpleasant coconut flavor. Intensely sharp and grassy. No thank you.

drank Tummy Timeout by Bloom Teas

Sipdown (1425)!

Almost done with these Bloom Tea samples – only a few matchas left. This one was fine and makes sense compositionally for the function that it aims to aid with. In terms of taste, it was a whole lot of licorice root – very coating and cloying and not strongly my thing.

drank Turbo Turmeric by Bloom Teas

Sipdown (1426)!

Well… this was a whole lot of turmeric. I didn’t except anything different from that, so I guess it’s fine!? I had to keep remembering to rewhisk as I drink because this settles a lot and then you have a thick turmeric sludge at the bottom of the cup. I don’t love turmeric, but this was palatable and I appreciated that it leaned more earthy over spicy. Glad I only had the one serving though!

Nearly through these samples – this one was pretty unmemorable. Unoffensive but somewhat flat/stagnant. Just a really plain black tea…

Sipdown (1405)!

The look of this matcha was a bit of a duller green and it didn’t froth well so I got the impressed it was probably not super fresh, but it did taste pretty good. Smooth/no grit to the texture with a slight sweetness to it and a fresh and floral body flavour. Reminded me a little bit of lilacs and snow peas, and I was a little impressed and taken aback by how pleasant the taste was despite the off appearance.

Left this to near the end of the Bloom Tea samples because I was really excited about it & I didn’t want to start off by finishing all the sachets that spoke the most to me. Sadly, this was a pretty big let down – it was very sharply tart/sour but in a way that really felt quite superficial/surface level hibiscus and not at all like rhubarb. Just thin, and uninspired. Aside from that piercing but flat flavour, there was a bit of spice? But really this was a boring miss of a tea – doesn’t touch the delicious rhubarb teas already in my stash.

AJRimmer

Aw, this is another one I was thinking about ordering! I really want to try their banana flavor, but based on your other reviews, I’m not sure how many of their other teas deserve a try!

Oh, no! This is definitely an example of pollen blend gone horribly wrong. It just smelled foul from the moment I opened the sachet – like wet dog. There was a shift when steeped, but not in a way that made it better: instead of wet dog it was more like cat’s breath. Gross! At least the taste was mostly just shrill hibiscus, but I still wasn’t able to make it through the full mug of this tea.

BLEH BLEH BLEH! Bee pollen, poo-poo!

Bit of a muddier tasting peppermint, but a peppermint nonetheless. I own better, but it was a decent cup of tea. I’ve said it before and I’ll stand by it now, even a “bad” peppermint tea really isn’t all that bad…

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one but my God it was good! I think it’s my favourite thing I’ve tried from Bloom yet – what an impact!

It’s got the toastiness of a Genmaicha, but none of the oceanic/grassy notes – add to that the naturally honeyed nutty notes of the rooibos base, a creamy/custardy note, and a very thick and sweet overripe banana note and there is something here that does taste like a Banana Rice Pudding but more than that tastes like a rich and indulgent slice of Banana Cream Pie!!

I finished this one off and then I immediately wanted another cup. So far, I have to say, if you could only try one tea from Bloom and you even slightly like banana teas then this is handily the one I would recommend.

AJRimmer

This sounds incredible. I may just have to place an order!

Yeah, this is a hard no for me. A part of me wants to love all cherry teas, but I just thought this was weakly flavoured, and the cherry flavouring was very artificial. That flavour paired against a stronger perfume-y rose and the very grassy notes of the green tea just felt flat and directionless/confusing. It was drinkable, but so… bleh.

Nothing special about this EG at all, so very happy to have finished it off. Tannic and robust bergamot notes – but the type you can find pretty well anywhere…

S is for… Speakeasy Lapsang!

Sipdown (1396)!

I didn’t do a Lapsang for “L Day” so I was glad to have the chance to do one later on in this alphabet tea challenge – although this is technically a blend and not a straight Lapsang. It seems to be a slight twist on a Russian Caravan, reading through the ingredients list.

This definitely speaks to my flavour preferences/biases, but I think this is easily my favourite tea that I’ve tried from Bloom so far – it doesn’t taste like it’s been cut with Oolong or Sri Lankan black tea and is instead just an assertive blast of deep smoke and wet wood notes. Very aggressive, but smooth! It’s a delightful balance – especially as a few jammier red fruit notes sneak into the cup as it just slightly starts to cool.

I certainly don’t need more Lapsangs in my collection (I think I have well over a dozen!) but this is definitely something I would order again – especially because none of the Lapsangs or Lapsang blends that I have happen to be in sachet form, and that’s just super convenient for travel!

drank Roots Reboot by Bloom Teas
15678 tasting notes

R is for… Roots Reboot!

Sipdown (1400)!

Before opening the little foil sachet I had assumed this would probably be a very roasty and dark kind of herbal tea – lots of burdock and chicory, kind of in the vein of DT’s “Forbidden Root” blend for a few Halloweens ago. Instead, I found it was basically a blend of intense turmeric and ginger! Both still roots, so not sure why I was surprised, but it was just a different spin than I’d expected.

For a blend that is so heavily turmeric and that steeps such a pigmented yellow hue from the turmeric, it’s not really super earthy – definitely some heat and spice though. With the ginger, this is the kind of blend that tickles the back of your throat with the spices and seems to warm you from the inside out. It’s not really my kind of tea profile at all, and I found the ginger aggressive (though the turmeric was passable) but overall it was much better than I’d have ever expected it to be.

O is for… Ooh-La-La Vanilla!

Sipdown (1397)!

I was nervous about this tea because when I opened the bag I was hit with a wave of vinegar like sourness – not like lemon or hibiscus but the sort of funk of something fermented or pickled. I could also see some pretty massive chunks of licorice root in the dry leaf as well, and neither of those were particularly great signs.

Honestly, though!? This was nice. It’s nothing really exciting/the write home over but for a vanilla rooibos I found it thick in mouthfeel/texture and quite flavourful. More of a creamy/custardy vanilla with plenty of honeyed notes from the rooibos and not really too much noticable licorice root either. For a simple and no fuss sweet vanilla tea without caffeine this could be a good option – just don’t let the dry leaf funk scare you off.

drank Jasmine Rush by Bloom Teas
15678 tasting notes

J is for… Jasmine Rush!

Sipdown (1356)!

Soooo many of my options for “J Day” were jasmine teas and I honesty just wasn’t really feeling florals for the day so I didn’t end up having a lot of J teas for the day – it did end up being a good opportunity to combine my K teas into the same day though since my options were limited there too, so with this merger day I think I’m caught up to everyone else who started on the first. Just behind in writing out my tasting notes…

I did drink this tea though because I wanted to get in the sipdown – and it was better than I had expected from a bagged jasmine green, especially one with echinacea which isn’t the tastiest of ingredients. It was quite fresh and sweet, almost with a juiciness to it. I didn’t know what ingredient to attribute the juiciness to, but I liked it!

Flavors: Candy, Floral, Jasmine, Rose, Sweet

Kittenna

I, too, had a bunch of jasmine teas. However, I was lazy in my searching and only happened upon the one I ended up drinking.

Sipdown (1363)!

Definitely not my style of tea but I appreciate what they did with this one – it’s nice and fresh with zesty bright lemon notes and a warming tickle of ginger. Mostly lemongrass, but I love the hint of lemon myrtle that differentiates it a bit from all the teas of a similar profile that exist out there. Not the “cleanest” flavour execution but it’s not muddy either and as a quick steep/easy to make “sick tea” I think this is a really valid choice.

Sipdown (1365)!

C is for… Coconut Kola Punch!

The name of this was intriguing and the ingredients list seemed promising, but I think this might have been the worst tea from Bloom that I’ve tried so far – it was aggressively lotion-y tasting coconut with some pretty green and grassy notes that didn’t compliment/improve upon that unpleasant coconut note.

And I can’t help but wonder what was supposed to be the “punch”…

Sipdown (1366)!

The dry leaf aroma of this was so good and so surprising that I think my expectations for this blend, which started pretty subdued, got very high very quickly. It was just super fresh, aromatic and very much juicy pink grapefruit! However, once steeped up the cup didn’t quite measure up to what I expected. The taste was more muted and soothing with lots of lemongrass coming through alongside a mild pink grapefruit note – it was just gentler and lacked some of the same vibrant juicy brightness. It was still a really nice tasting tea and had the dry leaf aroma not been so incredible I think I would have been very satisfied, though!
