I love the smell of bergamot in the morning, and this loose leaf tea does not disappoint coming out of the box. Unfortunately, the aroma dissipates soon after you start brewing the tea, and what you’re left with is a big, dark, caffeine punch to the face. Which admittedly is not necessarily a bad thing if you need to wake up in the morning.
Preparation
Thanks Pureleaf for this loose leaf! A while back I tried the bagged version and this portion of the review/log is about the loose!
It’s a medium strength EG with a more gentle POW of the Earl (or is it Grey?) LOL. The Citrus flavor is more of an orange instead of a bergamot. Many people think it’s the same type of flavor but I sure think it’s different :)
It doesn’t leave a funky aftertaste which I appreciate! This is a nice one to have on hand for any occasion :)
This is a decent bagged earl grey. I has more of a lemon-orange type citrus than a strong bergamot type.
It’s not overly strong but still tasty.
First cup of the day while listening to The Christmas Donkey Song on the Radio!

Incase you were wondering about Dominic The Christmas Donkey
thank you very much, TeaEqualsBliss! I now have that song running through my brain and probably will have for the rest of the day … oh groan, it’s early morning yet and I have 15-plus-hours to go today … accompanied by Dominic & co. singing in my head … lol!
LOL – Are you on Facebook, Lauren? Last Night I had “Lamda Lamda Lamda and Omega Mu” as my status (from Revenge of the Nerds) I had THAT in my head all last night! LOL
This is truly a basic Early Grey Tea. But it’s not something I would give to my Grandmother for tea time. The bag exploded when I tried to open it, and the flavors are basic Early Grey. The bergamont is a bit heavy and spicy, but the tea is good when you need a cup of tea. Don’t go out of your way to buy this tea. There’s no point.
Preparation
This is a blend of Indian, Kenyan and Ceylon teas. It was brought back for us by a friend that went to England. It’s a very basic breakfast tea. Not very flavorful, but very dark. I may have used too many leaves, as it is a bit bitter and acidic, and not much else comes through. It’s good for breakfast as it gives a nice little jolt of caffeine.
Contains green tea and lemon flavor. Normally when I tear open the foil envelope of a flavored tea I immediately notice the aroma. That is not the case here as I notice only the grassy hint of green tea. Brewing results in a pail green/caramel colored liquor. The aroma of the brew is only slightly lemon scented. First sip brings to mind hard lemon candy. It is not quite the taste of fresh squeezed lemon and it is not the subtle lemongrass influenced flavor of Stash Lemon & White. This is bold and bright with a bit of green tea after taste. I can’t quite make up my mind about this tea. On the one hand it isn’t exactly natural lemon tasting, on the other I keep brewing another cup.
The aroma of this tea is delightful.
The flavor is good. The peach and passion fruit flavors are strong, juicy and delicious. The black tea is not real strong, but there is no detectable bitterness, and very little astringency to it.
Preparation
This is a very enjoyable cup of tea but the brew can become bitter if you steep for too long. The instructions say 3 to 5 minutes steep time. I say stay on the low end of the limit and go longer only after tasting. This is my first Darjeeling.
Preparation
The first time I reviewed this on Steepster was 5 years ago (5!?!? – wow where does time go. I already had a long history with this tea before joining here. Looks like the last time I logged it was 8 months ago. I’ve missed you old friend. The Earl Green teabag version has a brighter bergamot and less interesting green base. The loose version tastes somewhere between a chun mee and a bold Vietnamese green. It is brash and loud – I like that. The bergamot is more of a light background support flavor in the loose version. If Ahmad would double the bergamot, I might need no other tea. This is less than $10/lb. So yeah, it is super cheap but has always been a personal favorite comfort tea. Fancy teas come and go in my collection but this one seems to always be waiting somewhere in the back.
Have you ever considered adding bergamot oil to it? If you put it in a bag, shook it up, and left it in a tin for a few weeks it might bring it up to the level you want!
Found it! It was right where I said. The reason I overlooked it, besides it was 6:30 AM was the Teavivre bag I stored the baggie in originally held Golden Tips, and I just recently opened a new bag of Golden Tips so… Anyway, the loose version of this tea is actually a green tea with the addition of a tiny amount of bergamot. It smells much stronger than it tastes. Why do I like it so much besides it is so cheap? When Earl Grey was destroying my stomach years ago I switched to Twinings Earl Green. It did not hurt me but they stopped selling it right after I became addicted. I discovered the bagged version of Ahmad Earl Green online. It is very close to the Twinings version but better in my opinion. I originally bought a bx of the loose leaf thinking it was the same but it is altogether different. It is not Earl Grey but it spoke to me. Yes I hear voices and they tell me to drink more tea. I must obey.
You ever start through your tasting notes to find the tea you want to review because you THINK it will be easier than finding it in the database only to realize several pages in that it was a stupid idea but then you are so determined you just keep going? Sure would be nice to be able to search our own notes. Yeah I know you have a few sort options but it isn’t quite the same.
Anyway I had this one this afternoon because I didn’t want to concentrate on my cup. I just wanted to mindlessly sip while attempting (and failing) my latest rescue attempt in the Kerbal Space Program. I am so addicted. My wife says its a dumb game. I love the design challenge. I put one poor Kerbal on planet Moho (Mercury equivalent) easy enough, but getting a ship that can return home is proving near impossible. I almost did it today – I had enough reserve fuel, it touched down softly, then fell over and exploded. Maybe my wife is right, but like the database search I am determined!
Tea accomplished its mindless purpose. So assuming it was acceptable by previous experience.
I so agree. Search option becomes key after you get a certain number of notes. It’s so unwieldy to have to page 50 or so tea log pages.
We need to find a game your wife can become mindlessly hooked on. I remember when my mom was all like, ‘Oh, what a silly waste of time!’ about the Sims, and then WHAM. ’It’s Thursday already?! Golly! Just one more family…’
I finally changed the name of this to match the packaging.
Oh Green Tea with Earl Grey why do I love you so? Others don’t see it but I just can’t quit you. You are my addiction. Someday I am going to run away. But not today.
Just a light bergamot with a strong slightly bitter green base. Less than $10 a pound. A Cheapster Steepster delight.
Feeling super lazy today. This is the only tea I have steeped. Trying to decide if I have the ambition to refill the pot. Did I mention I’m feeling lazy?
Yes, yes, that’s all good and well, but how is Captain Jebediah’s successor coming along? We must consider his legacy.
Ha ha, well I guess the good news is everyone survived. The bad news is the next generation prototype craft exploded on the launch pad. The credentials of our engineers are currently under review.
Just got home from my final exam. I decided I needed some comfort that I know I love, don’t have to think about, and almost can’t ruin. Yeah Ahmad tea!
My final was in Solid Works – a 3D modelling program. It was a grueling 3 hour experience. I was comfortable that I would pass but I exceeded my own expectations. Of a possible 240 points, I scored 240! Don’t mean to brag but Woot! You really can teach an old dog new tricks. As I left, some of the others were starting to kick the tables and slam their keyboards. I feel their pain. They should have some tea.
I am going stark raving mad. I haven’t been out of the house since late last week. My sons dug out our driveway late yesterday but until the ice is off the parking lots. Getting around is way too difficult for me and I am not going to risk it. Tomorrow I am driving to town to see how safe it looks.
In the meantime I brewed one of my simple favorites. I am so happy to have drawers full of amazing teas, but honestly sometimes I just miss a simple cup.
This is a tea I have bought for years. Long before I knew anything about Steepster or the bigger world of tea I found bagged Ahmad in a local market. It is generally about the quality of Twinings. I found the loose version at Amazon. I think it was $6 for 500g. It cost somewhere around $9 for shipping. This summer I found the loose leaf at the market where I was originally introduced to Ahmad. It was $10 for over a pound of tea. Is it THAT good? Uhmm. It has 3 ratings sooo maybe just to me. We have history :) Seriously, this is an inexpensive chun mee with a hint of bergamot. It will steep twice. What’s not to like.
