308 Tasting Notes

Another day, another iced cuppa Queen of Tarts to get me going.

I think I might sob if/when DT discontinues it, and the way they’ve been getting rid of teas left and right who knows what’ll be chopped next. That said, I might have to stock up the next time DT has one of those buy 2 get 1 free sales. I think I’ll have made a significant dent in my collection (through sipdowns and sales/trades) by then.

Flavors: Blackberry, Cranberry, Hibiscus, Tart

I feel you. I’m so frustrated that they are getting rid of mulberry magic and ginger beer. It’s like I can’t trust them cause I’m afraid of loving a tea to only it get discontinued.

apieceofquiche

Yeah, I’m the same way. There are so many teas that have been discontinued lately that I really enjoy – Cranberry Pear, Redberry Tonic, and Gold Rush to name a few – and I didn’t have the opportunity to stock up before they vanished from the website. Sad times. There’s really not enough warning, especially with these permanent teas.

Kristal

Mulberry Magic has been around for at least a solid 4 years (2nd tea I tried from DAVIDs and therefore one of the first teas I ever had and fell in love with). I understand from a business/profit perspective why they discontinue teas, but to me as a consumer it’s very inconsistent and unpredictable. Hence why I’m really been getting into a local tea shop in town- I was talking to the owner on facebook and she said she would NEVER retire a tea as long a customer was drinking it :)

I’m dipping into my Fantasy Island stash because I think I might have found a similar blend from another company.

I love this tea. It’s my favorite flavored black tea from DT. Pity that it’s been discontinued, retired, whatever term they use when they get rid of blends…

This tea is giving me a really rich, decadent dessert on a slightly astringent, chocolaty black tea base. I can forgive the astringency because this tea combines two flavors that I never would’ve thought to combine but now completely adore as a pair – coconut and raspberry. That said, recommendations for other coconut-raspberry blends are welcome.

The one thing it’s missing is chocolate.

…and, now that I’ve said that, I want to try it paired with Chocolate Macaroon.

I bought a ton of this tea when it magically reappeared on the DT website one day. I’m enjoying a lovely teapop this morning (double-strength Ruby Red + La Croix Melon Pomelo, iced). It tastes like summer in a glass – tart citrus with a slightly bitter finish.

I’m sampling the last of my unopened/new teas so I can determine whether or not to add them to my overflowing sell/swap bin.

I definitely get gingersnaps from this blend despite the lengthy ingredient list. Currants and candied pineapple? Random. I don’t love it but I don’t hate it. I don’t care for oiliness that ends up on the roof of my mouth.

I was hoping to like it a bit more than I do because it has a roobios and mate base like my all-time favorite mate from DT, Honeydew Mate. This blend, however, reminds me (a lot) of Pumpkin Mate with more spice. So if you enjoyed that you might like this as well.

Sadly, this tea does not compare to my beloved Honeydew Mate. I’m positive that this would be completely overlooked among the other mate blends in my collection, so it definitely needs to be re-homed.

It’s been a very long week. I don’t understand how it can only be Thursday. I needed a bit of a Calgon moment this afternoon, but I’m at work so I’ve decided to find comfort in a cuppa.

For me, this tea is akin to a big hug and kiss from grandma. It’s sweet and familiar. It’s comforting and uplifting. It’s creamy caramel-covered coconut deliciousness on a light and lovely white tea base.

I could, literally, drink this every day. I’m so tempted to buy more of this because it’s been discontinued but it’s so spendy.

I made a pitcher of this tea the other day because I’m desperately trying to de-clutter and sipdown the older teas in my stash. I brought the last few cups of it to work in my travel mug this morning.

It is a very heavy tea. I find I get more bang for my buck when I chop the larger pieces up in a food processor. That way there isn’t a random huge piece of dried tangerine or strawberry when I go to measure the tea.

That said, I love this tea. It’s delicious over ice, but I find it tastes so much better when steeped (for at least an hour) and then chilled. It’s literally like fruit juice, only thinner and without the pulp. This was my go-to summertime drink the summer it was released (2014). It also makes a fantastic base for other warm weather drinks – tea cocktails, slushies, etc.

I’m happy that, should I want to repurchase it once I’ve sipped down what remains of this DT LE blend in my stash, I can find it at other retailers.

Peaches & Cream > Just Peachy

I recently acquired a few more grams of this and this morning I’m reminded of how much I prefer it over Just Peachy.

It’d be different if Just Peachy was, in fact, just peaches or predominantly peaches, but it’s mostly apples. If the apples just contributed sweetness without any discernible taste I probably wouldn’t be bothered. However when there are so few ingredients in a tea, and the primarily ingredient is apples, one really notices the apple flavor.

But, I digress…there are apples in this blend as well, but the addition of vanilla and safflower petals really help to make this tea very well-rounded. I do wish the peach flavor was a bit less Haribo gummi peaches and a little more natural, but I can live with the fact that it’s not.

I really hope they bring this blend back one day.

Yeah I definitely prefer this one over Just Peachy also

This tea’s a staple for me when it comes to mate blends. I’m happy to be drinking it again. I steeped it with a bit of Me to We this morning. Even with the addition of Me to We it’s still so wonderfully tart. That’s a good thing to me. It’s like freshly picked blackberries that haven’t quite reached their ideal ripeness…in liquid form. I added a bit of stevia to just the tartness just a bit before pouring the tea over ice. Yummy.

drank Cookie Dough by DAVIDsTEA

A kind soul sent me a sample of this. I’m glad I don’t love it as much as other people seem to because it’s been discontinued for quite some time. Don’t get me wrong, it’s quite tasty. It’s not sugar cookie dough. It’s more like a really buttery chocolate chip cookie dough before the chocolate chips have been added. It’s sweet but not overly so, and the white tea base is pleasant. Is there apple in this? I taste apple. While this doesn’t tick all the boxes for me in terms of a dessert tea, it’s still quite nice. I’m glad I had a chance to taste it and remove it from my wishlist.

Side note, if anyone has recommendations for other “cookie” teas, especially with black tea bases, please share.

Flavors: Butter, Cookie

I remember liking this a lot 3 years ago when it was in store, but my tastes have changed and I don’t really do for chocolate teas anymore :/

apieceofquiche

Isn’t it weird how taste buds change?! A few years ago I didn’t like chocolate teas at all. Now I love chocolate teas that have a black tea base, especially as iced lattes in the morning.

Kristal

Haha indeed. I only occasionally go for dessert teas nowadays, which is a nice treat. 2 of my favourite treats are Birthday Cake from DAVIDs as a latte, or (just recently I discovered this), Earl Grey Cream Roobios from International House of Tea as latte. Yum :)

I cannot drink black teas due a sensitive stomach :(

apieceofquiche

I’m avoiding actual desserts and having dessert teas instead. I like Birthday Cake cold-steeped in almond milk. It’s one of very few rooibos teas I enjoy. Sensitive stomachs are no fun. I have sensitivities to gluten and dairy, so I understand completely. :/

Kristal

Yes, that is a good idea to sub dessert teas for desserts (something I should do myself!).

Wow, gluten and dairy- two whole food groups! That’s tough. My sister in law is lactose intolerant (so she can still eat most dairy products, fortunately) + gluten intolerant so I see how tough it is for her, never mind dairy as a whole.

I have a bit of acid relux/too much acid in the stomach so I gotta avoid fried foods, peppermint, + high acid foods (especially certain fruits and tomatoes). I still have a bit of wine at night a few times a week and it doesn’t seem to bother me though cause it’s always after dinner? Weird.

I generally like teas that combine strawberries and coconut so I thought I’d give this a go. Unfortunately, for me, it’s a miss. I just don’t love the base. To be fair I’m not a big fan of honeybush or rooibos teas. The strawberry and coconut really compliment each other well in this blend. The honeybush adds its usual sweet, honeyed flavor. There’s something slightly creamy about this tea too. It’s nice if you enjoyed fruity honeybush/rooibos blends, but I don’t like it enough to keep my sample-sized bag.
