965 Tasting Notes
I love Tokyo from Harney and Sons, and was very excited to see another sesame seed option. I was going to purchase a tin of Tokyo, but decided to try this one instead. I honestly wish I had just purchased Tokyo. This one is just okay. I like the sesame seeds and toasted rice with the black tea base, but there is too much coconut, and the caramel flavor turns my stomach a bit. I topped it with some coconut whipped cream from Trader Joe’s, and that made it more bearable. But, overall it was just a bit too sickeningly sweet.
I had initially tried a sample of this, and enjoyed it so much that I just purchased a tin. I generally don’t enjoy coconut teas, but found this one to be excellent. The lemongrass, coconut, vanilla, and ginger work together very harmoniously with the green tea.
This is the other tea I purchased after my tasting with Imen of Tea Habitat. It’s incredibly sweet, and has a nice sweet potato/yam flavor that made it so easy to drink. There’s nothing quite like a wild grown black tea, and Imen really has a talent for finding the best of the best.
I had an absolutely incredible tea experience today. I recently found out that Imen, who owns and runs Tea Habitat, offers private tastings in the Los Angeles area. Imen is considered the foremost authority on Dan Congs outside of China. We talked for 2 hours about tea, and tasted 6 different varieties- 2 blacks, a pu’er, a Wuyi oolong, and 2 Dan Cong oolongs. I ended up purchasing this one and a black that we tried. The tasting itself was only $25, and considering the quality of the tea, and the time she spent with me, an absolute steal. I got to enjoy a nice dim sum lunch at one of the most popular dim sum spots in LA, so it was a nice afternoon.
As for this tea, I was surprised by how much I loved it, as I thought I would prefer the Dan Congs we tried. But, this was incredible. It has a rich, spiced wood flavor that I could not get enough of.
Summer 2019. Just received this in my Whispering Pines order, and I’m not really getting any of the natural sweetness and honey flavor that I was anticipating. I’m getting more of a savory, rye bread note. It’s not bad by any means, just not what I was expecting. I’ll have to try this again in the next few days with a different brewing method to see if that makes a difference.
This is another reblend from the January box. It’s no longer a Shou Mei, but I thought it made sense to keep everything on the same listing. This is one I had been wanting to try for a very long time, and was ecstatic to see it make a reappearance. It’s exactly as I hoped, and by far the best grapefruit tea I’ve ever had. I love grapefruit, but there always tends to be an unpleasant acridness that is so synonymous with grapefruit. The brown sugar really balances out the natural bitterness of the grapefruit, and the overall mouthfeel is so smooth and velvety.
Enjoyed this as an oat milk latte with a shot of DavidsTea’s Candy Cane Matcha. The little milk frother I got for Christmas really changed the latte game for me. Super smooth and creamy, with a beautiful minty coolness. Even though the matcha is pretty sweet, it’s not cloying.
Received my 52Teas January box today, and I’m so excited to try all of the blends! There are a couple that have been on my wishlist. This one really tastes just as the name describes. Very distinctly raspberry, with some nuttiness, and a crumbly cookie flavor. Super tasty!
