This tea has grown on me. On it’s own it’s just ok. But my new trick is to add 10 (yes 10) mini marshmallows to my mug before pouring the tea in. Adds a little more gooeyness, which makes this a pretty yummy cup. Not as healthy as I’d like, but I’m cool with that.

Awesome. Great idea!

So I bought this late at night and didnt read the ingredients very carefully. Turns out this is a mostly rooibos tea. There’s some green, but the rooibos wins the battle. It actually is good for a rooibos but that stupid aftertaste still comes through. My mom loved this as it does have some coffee flavor in it. For some reason when I ordered it, I thought it was a black tea. I’m thinking next time I’ll mix some black in cause the caramel flavor in this is good. Anybody know of any other tricks for masking the rooibos aftertaste?

Ooh, I like how you think!

Maybe some whole milk or cream?

The first time I had this tea I thought it was amazing. The subsequent times it has gotten less and less tasty. Maybe because I’ve had so many other great caramel teas that now this one just lost its luster. Oh well.

What a disappointment. This tea sounds like it’d be amazing. I’ve tried so many different things and can’t seem to get much out of it. I just cold brewed it and it’s an ok tea, but it doesn’t really have any flavors that taste like buttered toffee caramel corn. Looks like this is going in the swap pile.

Sil

brew for 2 mins. add just a touch of sweetner. it should help a little. not enough to save it in my opinion, but it made it a better cup.

TastyBrew

Thanks Sil, I’ll give this one last try…

Sil

it’s certainly not high on my list but the sugar helped…but i just don’t like drinking tea that requires sugar to be more enjoyed lol

I saw this tea at H-Mart today and I couldn’t resist, in fact I bought a bunch of strange sounding grain teas, but I was insanely excited about this one. I love burnt rice, burnt anything really. Not SUPER burnt, but a little burnt (roasty) flavor goes a long way with me. So once I saw the name of this tea I couldn’t not buy it.

I didn’t even know what to expect, an extra roasty genmaicha? I got home and threw a bag in a mug and poured my water in. I smelled toast coming from my cup. After a few minutes (I had no idea what the parameters are as it’s in Korean), I pulled the bag out and had a sip. I knew I loved it immediately but I couldn’t place the flavors. After a few sips I realized what it tastes like.

Slightly burnt cheese toast. I know that sounds really strange for a tea, but holy snikeys, that’s what it tastes like and it’s sooooo good. I can totally imagine using this in a broth too. I love finding good savory teas that can try and fill my snack cravings. This one is probably the best find yet. I can’t wait to try the rest. But only after I make another cup of this.

I buy so much stuff at HMart. This sounds good. The last grain tea I got (at Lotte though) was roasted barley tea, but it was too roasty.

Kittenna

Hilarious tea name!

OMGsrsly

SO good to make at home, too. Almost burn the rice crust onto the bottom of your pot, then steep it in water. Mmm. I need to go to H-Mart now I know there’s a faster version!

Dinosara

Burnt rice “tea” is a huge thing in Madagascar, actually. It’s called rano mafana, which literally means hot water, or rano napango, which doesn’t really have a meaning. Every meal is eaten with a lot of rice made in a huge pot, and inevitably a lot gets burnt to the bottom. They boil water in the pot until its nice and dark; tastes like toasty, burnt rice! It is also functional because it helps with cleaning the pots after dinner since it loosens up the burnt rice so you don’t have to scrub so hard.

TastyBrew

@Dinosara That’s cool. Thanks for sharing. I love this stuff! I’ve been drinking it all day now. I can see how it could easily become a staple. Especially since it’s so functional!

And the name of this tea is awesome. My mom came over this afternoon and she’s used to me offering her some pretty nice teas. Today I offered her, Crust of overcooked rice tea. And she loved it to.

love the name!!

Love. This. Tea.

I added brown sugar to the pot for the second steeping. Yum.

Terri HarpLady

That sounds awesome!

Kittenna

Oh man. I can’t even imagine what brown sugar would taste with this tea. Mind-blowingly awesome? :P

Sil

Ooh there’s an idea…

This tea has the most amazingly wonderfully delicious aroma. It came in the mail today and I grabbed it as we were leaving so I couldn’t brew it up right away. So instead my excitement grew and grew to try it.

At least it smells good. But the tea is not great. I’m hoping I can coax a better flavor out of this by experimenting with temps and times. I let about half my cup cool completely while I was making dinner and it actually kind of tasted like caramel corn and genmaicha. I resteeped my leaves and the second round had kind of an old butter flavor. Bleh.

I really want to like this. It has so much potential and I love flavored genmaichas. And seriously, it smells amazing.

In the past couple days I’ve had this and forever nuts and I’m pretty sure they are the same. This tea is ok for me. Tealizzy is right that brioche tastes very similar to this but with a good black tea base. She’s so right. I love brioche, but I like the dimension the black tea adds to it. This tea tastes ok, but just seems to be missing something. Plus I’m not a fan of the beetroot.

Update: Actually, this one is growing on me. Not as fakey as forever nuts. More apple maybe? Hmm, I may actually reorder this.

This has been my morning tea for a long time. There is absolutely nothing fancy about this. It’s rich, bold, malty and takes (requires) milk and honey well. I haven’t had this in awhile since trying all kinds of new ones, but it was a long night and I needed something extra strong. This is definitely still a favorite, a little bit like coming home.

Update: I forgot how strong this one is caffeine wise. Don’t drink this one without food!

This is a really interesting tea. Buttery, nutty, rice-y. I’m really enjoying it. Very unique. It’s kind of like the love child of a buttery milk oolong and genmaicha. I like it.

I love tea. And I love beer. I spent my twenties thoroughly enjoying all that beer has to offer but now that I’m into my thirties and a stay at home mom of 2 little kids and 1 big kid, I spend more time enjoying tea.

I joined steepster in Feb 2013 and it’s crazy how much my tastes have changed since joining. Before, I liked cream and honey in all teas and loved mostly dessert blacks. Now I almost rarely drink them, but enjoy them from time to time. What I love more than anything are straight rich black teas, Fujian, Laoshan, Rizhao, etc… I also love pretty much any black tea that the little leaf hoppers have gotten their teeth on.

I’m still not too into the green/white/oolong varieties. I keep trying to but my tastes are evolving pretty slowly on that front.

Overall, I just enjoy tea. Something about it that just settles me.
