93 Tasting Notes

Backlog from last night.
Had a killer headache and was a bit restless at 11. (The rain is getting on my nerves)Then I found this in my cupboard – gooddie!

It’s… It’s sweet and soothing. Can’t really tell you all the flavors because of the blend. Because it is a Blend with a biiiiig B. Green tea meet herbal tea meet rooibos. I acually felt my body unwinding after a half cup of this, so it works.

They should call it SUPERTEA

Ewa

oooh, sounds nice! I’m always looking for a good relaxing tea…

drank Mi Lan Dan Cong by Canton Tea Co
93 tasting notes

I read a description of this before preparing the tea. Is it me or does every description of tea have the word fruity in it? Some teas actually have NO fruity notes whatsoever.

In time I have learned to ignore the descriptions and I actually learned to enjoy sitting for hours trying to figure out the name of a specific flavor. Today was different. I had to find out what Canton tea had the name “DAN” in it. The name was handwritten on my sampler so I wasn’t sure of the name – Milan DanCang sounded a bit off.
By the time I founded the correct entry I started to read the tasting notes just for the fun of it. When I went over the “fruity” description I ignored it. All teas can’t be fruity, It’s a naturelaw.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this tea really was fruity.
I still can’t figure out what fruit it is. Peach? Something like that. Anyway, the tea also have a nutty flavor in the end.

Fruity AND nutty!
I like it (honestly what don’t I like?!).

By the way! I just won some tea by Doulton! Yay!
- I shouldn’t write it in a teanote but I can’t help myself. I am just too happy ;)

OH GOD!
This is AWESOME. I have to get more of this!!!

I remember smelling the leafs before steeping and going HMF. It smells so green and seaweedy – I was really not in the mood for green. But I went with it…
Threw a lot of leafs into the mug. Thought for a second that I may have overdone it, but Eh, didn’t have a lot of time. After steeping my mug was full of leafs. Literally – there was a jungle of tea in my mug. Pretty!

Was bracing myself for the seaweed when I took the first sip.
Imagine my face freeze for a second, my eyes go reaally big and looking dumbfounded to the mug. (Worth to notice : I never tried a alishan oolong) Had I forgotten to clean the mug before use? No, I just took it out. I am sure of it!

I.Love.this.
Yum… It so spicey. A warm spice… Kardemomme?
What’s that in english. sigh I love this.

Thomas Smith

Cardamom
I usually get a bit of cardamom and cinnamon as well

Rijje

Oh thank you! It’s always good to know that I didn’t hallucinated the spicey note.
Sometimes it’s hard to belive what flavor you can get out of the leafs!

drank Earl Grey by Royal Copenhagen
93 tasting notes

One of the guys requested a tea with rum. (He had a cold)
Had to find one of my books about tea to find out what tea is good with rum, and the book from Perch had a recipe on a drink with earl grey and rum – thus the choice of this tea.

I was a bit too generous with the rum 1/6 part so the first cup was too bitter.
Then I made two cups more for me and another friend (we got curious) and made a 1/8 rum and earl grey blend. With honey.

May I say YUMM? Oh, yum. YUM.
Next time I host a party TeaRum will be on the table!

Lori

hmmm..earl grey and rum- that’s a combo…!

Rijje

It is :)

Ewa

oh man, you saddled the sick guy with the failure? So sad!

Rijje

LOL no I switched the cups, so the sick guy got the 1/8 blend.
Couldn’t dream of serving bad tea (rum or not) to my guest.

Decupboarded.
Had it standing with some other teas at my parents for a time. They got sick and went “ninja” into my cupboard (I don’t mind really – the more teadrinkers in the family the merrier). Mother swears she had some kind of “highs”. I think she steeped some of my pure herb bags.

Anyway, they tried almost everything until they found my ceylon and my darjeeling. They confessed with guilt when they returned my tea: “We’re sorry, but we drank all of it.” (The ceylon and the darjeeling)

I was almost rolling around on the floor with tears of laughter.
They are really the opposite of me – I couldn’t stand those two cans of ceylon and darjeeling. Father loved the daarjeling from a No-name-brand and mother loved this ceylon from perchs.

Picked a random pack from my Canton sampler :)
Is a little sleepy, so my review will be short and lacking in details.

Leafs are nice, green and hairy. Erhm… and somehow they defy gravity and stays at the top of the cup. Maybe it’s because I was to lazy to preheat the cup before steeping. Or maybe it has issues. “I am too good for this cup. Now get me your finest porcelain.”-ish issues.

How to describe the aroma?
First thing that comes to mind is ASSAM, but no way in hell this is assam. I must be craving or something. Anyway… First sip screams: ASSAM, but no. It can’t be. This is a white silver needle soooo far from assam as it’s possible.

The only thing you can trust me for is that this tea really is green/white, hairy and that the liquid is very bright. Sweet tasting.

The rest – look away from it. I’ll write another tasting note for this when I have dealt with my ASSAM! craving.

Funny thing is… I really don’t like assam that much.

drank Yugen Matcha by Marukyu-Koyamaen
93 tasting notes

I actually had this for awhile in my cupboard.
The tiny can just stood there in my fridge looking pretty
…I lacked the courage to try it.

But today is the day!
Took me forever to whisk the pouder out, F-O-R-E-V-E-R, but the end result is pretty. Fresh cloudy green. Aroma: The pouder before steeping/whisking is very…seaweedy.

But the first sip revealed a sweet tea with a little seaweed note at the end.
JOY! The seaweed I can work on… Maybe work with the amount of matcha.

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C

drank Bai Lin Gong Fu by Canton Tea Co
93 tasting notes

Before Brewing:
Awesome leafs. Very (very) thin leafs with red/golden streaks on them. And they got hair! A lot of red tiny hair. LIKE you already Bai Ling Gong fu! Smelling the tea reveals a unique aroma. What is it? It’s… seaweedy, assam smelling intense aroma.

After steeping:
Golden liquid, thick and smooth texture and – assam tasting tea with a twist. A little salty sour at first and juicy sweet at the end. Yum! Didn’t catch the caramel, but trying the resteep at a lower temp in hopes of finding it.

drank Jasmine Pearls by Canton Tea Co
93 tasting notes

Before Brewing:
These pearls are different from my other collection of jasmine pearls. They are a bit smaller and whiter with more “hair” on them. I like that! That’s like three indication of a good tea. And the smell of jasmine! Oh god, it’s so powerful.

After steeping:
It’s so relaxing to watch the pearls unfurl… Not to mention fun. I just love to see the balls that float at the top fall down to the bottom. Just call me evil, but I really like gravity (and water) drag them down. The brew is very light in color – to be honest it looks exactly like water. First sip reveals a gentle jasmine flavor. Some jasmine tea are too perfumed and too strong. Simply put : to damn overpowering. This has a perfect balance. Like other jasmine tea it has a lingering aftertaste, but it’s very discrete and quickly gone.

I resteeped the leafs, only to find the tea become even better!
It becomes so gentle and juicy at the back of the throat.

I am really pleased with these pearls. They deserve every star they got.

Paul M Tracy

I’ll have to go back and give this one another chance. It was good, but I was looking for more fragrance and less “perfume like” taste. Do you happen to remember your time and temp? Maybe I messed up on the preparation.

Rijje

I steeped them at a low temp.
The water was heated to 80, but I let it cool of to 75 – 70 celcius. Then the brew stood for about 5 min… if I remember correct that is :)

drank Rooibos by Flavia
93 tasting notes

It’s a unflavored rooibos, that dosn’t smell of much.
Very dusty liquid, very dark orange and very neutral all in all. This is not a tea that screams: “COME AND TRY ME”…

That’s fine also. It taste okay.
It’s you typical rooibos right there – but I am missing something vital. A freshness, a personality. If this tea was a human it would be a boring middleaged man who minds his work, loves his family but forgot to live a little for himself (so sad).

Let’s pep the tea a little bit (I usually don’t but now I feel sad for the tea because of the disciption!) brown sugar should do the trick adds sugar
Hmm. It’s fine but it’s still off. Milk? Do people add milk to rooibos?
adds milk

Wauw! It’s a whole new tea. It taste of honey now…
I like this!!! Note to self: Add milk to this every time.

LiberTEAS

I’ve never been real fond of plain rooibos… BUT I never have tried adding milk to it either…

Rijje

I was very surprised, but I don’t think I would add milk to a flavored rooibos.
That would take out the fun of it.

Many things can be said about me, but I rather not go into details… Other than the facts that: Yes, I am from Greenland (Yeah, it’s totaly awesome!) and I love my books, cats and tea.

I love all kinds of tea, but must confess a greater love towards the Da Hong Pao and a deep hatred for Ceylon and Pickwick. (Yes, I am aware that Ceylon is area). Sorry, It’s not them, it’s me.
Other than that I love the greens, the whites and the blacks (and all of the things in the middle) evenly.

Rating system – I love the smileyrate here on steepster, so I’ll just follow that. That’s 1 point for the worst tea in the history of man, and 100 point for some of the best tea… note that I usually rate high because I am a optimist and love all things tea.
