drank Watermelon Doke by Butiki Teas

I had the second steep of this blend iced. It was still sweet and watermelon-y, but the base tea had much more presence than in the first, hot steep. It was a bit grassy and drying. I liked it better the other way.

I liked this so much at the Coffee & Tea Festival that I bought a tin on the spot. Unfortunately, I oversteeped it last night and ended up with an overly tart hibiscus blegh. Note to self: watch the time on this one.

Travel mug breakfast tea. For some reason I was expecting the base to be Doke Rolling Thunder. Imagine my surprise upon finding that this is actually a white tea. I’m still not convinced that it isn’t mislabeled – this blend looks, tastes, and smells exactly like the Watermelon Xylophone. Which is to say, juicy and delicious. Drinking this, I could almost believe it’s spring despite the temperature still being wintry.

Yum! I had this with rice milk in my travel mug. Not sure if I would call the flavor white chocolate per se, but it is creamy, malty, and vaguely chocolate-y. Wonderful start to the day. Bonus points for being a black tea that doesn’t make my stomach hurt. Thanks for the swap Dustin!

Sipdown! This turns out to be really good at making me sleepy. I used a little more leaf than last time, so the brew was earthier this time around. It’s still very smooth and soothing. Thanks to Starfevre for sending it to me!

I had this with a splash of rice milk today. The result was a creamy apricot brew that, yup, made my stomach hurt. Delicious though!

Almost all teas taste the same to my dad, and even he thought this one’s special. He gulped down the first giant mug and immediately requested a second. High praise indeed!

Dangit. I tried this one at the Coffee & Tea Festival yesterday and promptly bought a tin. It’s delicious. The spice blend is very well-balanced and a touch creamy even before adding anything to the brew. I happily made myself a cuppa this morning with some rice milk to bring out the creaminess more. My one critique is that the clove gets a little too strong towards the bottom of the cup, but it’s still delicious. So OF COURSE this turns out to be one of those black teas that makes my stomach hurt. Maybe it’s Indian teas specifically? I know I recently had Chinese and Nepalese blacks without a problem. Hmmm.

Anyway, this is frickin tasty but I can’t drink it. Swaps, anyone? Otherwise I’ll just give it to my brother.

Flavors: Cinnamon, Cloves, Creamy, Vanilla

Indian black teas give me a stomach ache. I believe it is due to the higher levels of polyphenols. Indian greens do not seen to affect me, so it may have something to do with the varietal used, or the terroir, or who knows what?

Aw, it’s nice to know I’m not alone!

My stomach started growling during dinner. No pain, just… strange noises. I hoped some pu’erh might silence the grumbling. I wanted something easy to drink and settled on this blend, which came to me courtesy of Starfevre almost two years ago. It’s definitely easy drinking. Sweet and floral. The first cup stopped the weird stomach noises, but they started up again when the cup was done. Time for more! This seems to be fairly low in caffeine. I’m pretty caffeine-sensitive but I’m actually getting sleepy. This is just so smooth and sweet… it tastes more like an oolong than any pu I’ve had yet. The leaf easily yielded three solid steeps. The third steep was earthier than the first two but still mild, sweet, and floral. Thanks Starfevre!

I love this company. They have a Fujian black that is excellent, and the daughter ring green is so good.

drank Roasted Almond by Capital Teas

Another blend I tried at the Coffee & Tea Festival. The flavor was just almond cookie goodness. Alas, there’s a bit too much hibiscus in here. It really lingers on the palate, too. Blegh. I probably would have bought a small quantity of this blend anyway, but they only had it in 1-lb tins. I’m not about to buy a pound of any tea!
