1112 Tasting Notes

I placed a big order to Mountain Rose Herbs for essential oils, herbs, spices, etc. and couldn’t help choosing a few teas to try, too :) I am one of those people who love a nice simple rooibos, and thought one with a little vanilla added would be right up my alley.

This one is truly delicious – fresh tasting and very rich. The vanilla is subtle, and I’m thinking of cutting a vanilla bean into it to enhance the vanilla flavor (I also got a bunch of them from Mountain Rose!).

I really like the idea that it’s so full in Good Things. As the Mountain Rose site states: A gentle and effective tea full of anti-oxidants, Vitamin C, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Sodium, Copper, and Manganese. I think this sounds much better for a person than the processes they use to make decaf tea :) I still love my Vanilla Comoro 4ever & ever xoxoxoxo, but I think I’m going to give up on my searching for decaf teas, and enjoy these naturally caffeine free tisanes that have some nice benefits.

P.S. Finally got the Tea tote I’ve been coveting from Mountain Rose Herbs for the last year!

Hello everyone! I’m going to change the way I do tasting notes, and wanted to let you all know :) I’ve decided I’ve learned enough about my daily tea habits to start logging only when I try a new tea, or when I have something exceptional to say about a tea that I’ve already logged. I’ll still keep my cupboard up to date, and be checking in regularly to see what you are all drinking!

This was my cup today, but in the spirit of my new system, I’ll refrain from saying mmmmmmm roasty and delicious for the 29831982301238 time ;)

I simply adore this tea. It has instantly shot up to my top 10 list :) It kinda reminds me of a love child of Queen Catherine and Emperor’s Red. Just a little smoky. Rich. Roasty. Chocolatey. Sweet. Somehow relaxing and decadent…almost like a glass of port or some other spirit that makes you want to sit back and sigh and ruminate.

I am so glad you like it! It was a HUGE hit here at Tuesday tea a few weeks ago. I will have to keep this one around.

I have some in my cupboard waiting to be opened….. ;)

Feeling better today, and enjoying my zingy, roasty friend! Four steeps, including one cold one. No one can say I don’t wring every last drop from each teaspoon of tea :)

I wanted a tea that I could drink alllllllll day, and this one came to mind. So nice and sweet. I can’t taste the complexities with my illness, but the sweet potato-ness and gentleness come through. Very soothing and delicious.

I hope you start feeling better soon! My son is abed right now with a terrible sore throat and pounding ears. He never ever misses work or school unless he is terribly sick – he came home with a temp of 103 AFTER Tylenol! Doc says it is viral so we are waiting it out and treating the symptoms…hope yours goes away really soon!

JacquelineM

Thank you! You should have seen me at 2:30 am eating dark chocolate on the sofa :) :) :) It did help for awhile!!!

JacquelineM

…and I hope your son feels better too!!

ashmanra

I ate some Lindt Dark Chocolate with a Touch of Sea Salt. I am not sick, however. We’ll go with the story that an ounce (or two) of prevention is worth a pound of cure! :D

I made one bag of this tisane with an addition of a squeezed lemon and honey for my Endless Cough and felt dramatically better…for about an hour. I felt that it worked better than any of the cough medicines I’ve been trying. Friends who have had this nasty bug say the cough lasts for 2-3 weeks, so you will be hearing me complain for about another week ;)

I think this is the 9th or 10th cup I’ve had of this in the past two days. When I’m drinking this, I don’t cough. They really are magic herbs for sickness. Medicinal in the best way possible. Tasty and helpful for two steeps.

A nice sleepy cup with lots of honey. This one isn’t as fresh tasting as it once was, and it’s low on mango and cranberry pieces, but still very enjoyable. I’m one of those people who actually like the taste of chamomile :)

I chose this one partially for relaxation, and partially because I’m still coughing and the honey is soooooo soothing. If anyone has a cough remedy, or even an OTC medicine that always works for you, I’m all ears. I haven’t had a full night of sleep in almost a fortnight (and neither has my husband!).

Dark chocolate, at least 65%, works well for my hubby. He prefers Hershey Special Dark, while youngest daughter prefers Dove Dark. This works for him when prescription codeine cough syrup doesn’t.

gmathis

Oooh, I like that prescription!

My mother-in-law smears mentholatum on us and ties a bandana around our necks to keep it there…when she can catch us! I must admit it works when the problem is sinus drainage….

My poor husband had a vile and long day at work yesterday, and didn’t feel up to doing the shopping. We are out of coffee and milk. I’ve talked before about how I drink coffee AND tea. Two cups of coffee with milk and sugar has been my happy wake-me-up for decades.

TODAY is different, and I am drinking Queen Catherine. It was of course delicious, and really lovely with a buttered English muffin. No bitterness, that slight sweet smoke amazingly delectable.

BUT, I have to say, I am missing my coffee something terrible. Of course part of it is caffeine withdrawal. I’m headachey, cranky, and impatient. I would have to drink at least twice the QC to get to my coffee state (and that doesn’t take into account the tea I drink later in the day which adds even more caffeine). Part of it is that I’m missing the milk and sugar comfort. I think I would be pining much less for my coffee if I had a cozy Assam with milk and sugar instead of the austere QC.

I don’t even know what I’m trying to say! I am feeling very annoyed with my dependency on caffeine, milk and sugar…that’s for sure. This little morning of “doing without” is revealing. I felt very excited when I started appreciating my late morning and afternoon plain chinese teas, and maybe it’s time to take it a notch further? Maybe this will all be a distant memory once my husband goes to the store? We shall see…

I made another pot of QC and used a teaspoon of sugar in it. My disposition is improving. I must need sugar supplementation ;)

ashmanra

I always put milk and sugar in my QC if I am drinking it in the morning…in any morning tea for that matter! I just need the comfort, I suppose. I had a buttered English muffin today also, but with chocolate milk to cushion my tamoxifen and ibuprofen. Now it is time for tea!

LadyLondonderry

I can empathize. Caffeine addiction is tough, and I have yet to conquer it. So far the best I’ve done is confining coffee and black tea to mornings, switching to green tea after noon, and then going totally decaf after work.

Besides the caffeine addiction, the force of habit is strong. I too feel cranky when I have to drink my wake-up tea without my customary almond milk.

Bio

I love to cook, bake, read, paint, knit, do needlework, and garden. I need my coffee, but I LOVE my tea. I work at an Art School, and attend a large public university doing post-bac work (my BA is in English). I’m interested in the liminal spaces between art and craft, the academic and the practical, the individual and community, and the old and the new. I’m currently exploring these ideas through the disciplines of education, literature, history, and psychology.

I enjoy writing tasting notes, but have decided not to numerically rate teas as of 9/14/10. For an explanation, see my looooong tasting note about Mountain Malt from the Simple Leaf.

My favorites:
Chinese black teas
A good “milk and sugar” English style black
Earl Grey (classic, and in all variations!)
Vanilla teas (classic, and in all variations!)
Jasmine, Rose, Violet and other froofy, flowery teas!
An Occasional Oolong
Flavored Rooibos
Herbal Tisanes
