421 Tasting Notes
Tried this with my husband today when we stopped into a new tea room – The Tailored Tea. He of course said “it tastes like tea”. But I noticed the earthy tones of this tea. It was nice and light. Not something I felt the need to take home (they sell it by the ounce there), but I would probably have it again sometime down the road when we go back. I will say it was prepared correctly! Which is sometimes rare when ordering loose leaf tea in most places. So kudos to them on that!
I’m trying to like green teas. In fact there is one I like from another company but you’ve seen those posts… So thanks to AmyOh for letting me know about the Den’s tea sampler only available to new customers. It came with five green teas and a booklet on green teas. PLUS I also got a little sample of the tea of the month!
We went out to dinner tonight (thankfully as I did not want to cook) with some of my husbands frat brothers. They’d heard about a local place that served up exotic burgers along with those made from beef. His friend were bent on getting a Lion burger!! Which they did and I tried, it was good. I opted for a lobster burger (YUM!) which came with some fries with crazy hot spices on them. We also got a banana date dessert on the house because well we were awesome.
Right…the tea. Well, I was very full after such a great meal and wanted something on the lighter side when I got home. So I figured I’d give this one a go. I have to say I like it. Mostly because it doesn’t taste like grass like most sencha I’ve had does. In fact it is very light and crisp. The liquid in the cup is very green, but very good. I think this one might be a keeper. Of course I’d also like to try their loose leaf version too. Very refreshing after a long day at work and an interesting dinner out.
This was one of the teas in my tea of the month package for May. I thought I’d give it a go while i was at work today. I tend to love Yunnan Black teas and this one sounded interesting to boot. I was not expecting to be blown away by a tea, but I was. This tea is very bold and savory… may be in love. I must add it made my snickers bar taste out of this world too. ;) Kudos to David and his team for this find that is going to cause me to place another order in under two weeks.
All of these good reviews…….it makes me want to order ssooo much more tea, and I really do <3 a good Yonnan tea!
I’m working on liking green tea. I really am. BUT this was nowhere near any kind of good. :( I steeped it for the time listed on the bag. It went really bitter really quickly. There was also something kinda globby in the tea as I was drinking it…this did not help. I also managed to spill half on my desk…this did not add to the experience. sigh
Bummer. I hope you don’t give up on green teas, though! It may take some time to find one you like, but I think you will find when you do, it’ll be worth it!
Dragonwell in general has so many grades and most on the market carry it for its name recognition, that many of the good ones are difficult to find and usually cost in excess of$60/# so beware cheaper imitations….would not be my first pic if your trying to like green tea, its elusive nutty/pistachio flavor is nice, but it doesn’t really evade the astringency or vaguely oceaning flavor that so many don’t like about green teas….I think I would start with a nice green Darjeeling….or verdant teas laoshan green
Oh dear. Sometimes it’s just not meant to be. I find Dragon Well has a very distinctive flavour, though, so don’t give up. Alternatively, make it again, pour out the first steep and go straight to the second. For me there was enormous difference between the two and the second seemed much more fresh and perky. (Of course that was a different brand, so it might still not work)
@SimpliciTEA – I’m not giving up! :) I know I like the Sun Dried Jingshan from Verdant, but that should mean I will like other green teas too? Right?
@Kashyap I love the Sun Dried Jingshan Green from Verdant. It came as one of my tea of the month teas a while back and I do like it. So now i’m trying to expand on that and find other greens to like. I’ll look into the Green Darjeeling – which tea co. has your favorite?
@Angrboda – Thanks for the tip! You may be right their Dragonwell or Dragonwells in general might not be my cup of tea!
I have not been a fan of dragonwells in the past. I finally found a really good one and it was $24 an ounce.
Maybe start with some flavored greens? A while back, I couldn’t stand the vegetal flavor of green teas. But then I had some really good flavored greens and then found I liked the unflavored versions more. I still can’t appreciate Dragonwell though, so you’re not alone there!
I brewed up a sample of the Sun Dried Jingshan green from Verdant last year, and it was one of the best tasting green teas I have ever had (it seemed to embody that hard-to-describe fresh taste I have found in only a few green teas); so, yeah, if you like it you will likely find other green teas appealing.
It seems like it’s a matter of experimenting. My wife didn’t like green teas at first (she used to call drinking it, ‘taking her medicine’), but now she actually enjoys drinking some of them. I agree that going with a flavor-added green could help ‘ease you into them’. Still, when it comes down to it, no matter how many you try, you may not like them; after all, they’re not for everyone (what is?). But if you like that Sun Dried Jingshan, you will likely find other green teas you will like. Good Luck! : )
This tea was one of my teas of the month for May (at least I think it was for May). First off there is a WHOLE lot of ginger in this cup! I didn’t think their would be so fool that I am stuck my nose right in the bag and we’ll just say my sinus troubles might be over for the season. There is more to this tea like cinnamon, fennel, basil, etc, but sadly the ginger is all I am smelling at the moment.
The taste is heavy on the ginger too. It isn’t bad, but it isn’t what I expect from a chai either. I don’t say this very often about a tea from Verdant…but I am not in love with this one. I’ll give it another go tomorrow and see if I’m somehow missing everything else.
The jury (me) is still out. Maybe I need to add milk and honey as they suggest on their website next time. It isn’t horrible, just not what I am used to with other Chai’s I’ve tried.
I mean the West Cape Chai.

I like both the Chais from Rishi (the caffeine and the West Cape). Just for the record I thought the Laoshan Chai from Verdant was pukey but everyone else seems to love it – go figure
If anyone wants to try the Ohio Thunder Chai let me know….when its gone it may be gone for good and its pretty yums
send me a message with an address and I will send you a taste…Ceylon Kenilworth OP, organic Assam Banathspathy FOP, organic green cardamom, cinnamon chips, whole clove, organic shreaded/dried ginger, decordicated cardamom, organic whole black peppercorns….the cup is warming, fruity, gently spicy and the large tea leaves make it very difficult to overextract allowing for the spices to have enough steep time to be expressed
I just used up the last of my stock of this tea. Not to worry I ordered more as it is currently on sale! (Bad influence I know) I’m not usually a fan of green teas, but I am slowly finding out which ones I like and which I don’t. This is one I really enjoy a lot. It does have a bit of a veggie flavor to it, but in a good way. This is a really crisp cup of green tea. It also (at least for me) never gets bitter – which is a green tea turn off for me.
I also have to say the description here is pretty accurate the tea almost sparkles in the cup and it is very refreshing. I’ve also enjoyed it iced too. I scored three infusions of what little tea i had left…I sure hope my new order arrives this week! I highly suggest picking some up.
This puerh just keeps giving! One brick off the bunch will give you several steeps! So many that I broke down and made iced puerh out of it! The flavor is very rich with hints of chocolate ad I sip. The smell of the dry leaves smells like a typical puerh to me, but the taste is a nice mix of the chocolate and a hint of licorice. The color of the tea is an earth brown that looks a lot like coffee. But the taste is amazing!
Preparation
First things first, I bought the loose leaf version of this tea. The shop I stopped in today had both for the same price and well that much was a no brainer. Long story short…I’ve been looking for an Earl Grey I liked for a long time now. So a few weeks ago the latest Republic of Teas catalogue turned up with a sample of this tea and I gave it a go and I found I really liked it. So I finally bit the bullet and bought some. I think I like that the bergamot flavor is really light (for me) and it makes for a very light and smooth cup of tea. So glad I grabbed some. :)
I don’t tend to enjoy green teas. I drink them but I don’t “get” them. Hopefully you all are following me. Anyway I think I found a green I can get behind! The toasty and nutty flavor is awesome in this green tea. So flavorful and yes I may have eaten the rice pieces too. I can’t describe the smell for you because I can’t really smell a thing at the moment. But I will tell you this has turned into my afternoon go to cup since i picked it up last weekend in DC. :)
Preparation
First tea of the morning. I picked this up last weekend in DC for a friend of mine and I snagged a cups worth for myself from the tin this morning…shhh! I needed a little pick me up and this did just the trick! Rich and bold the perfect morning wake up for me today. There is a little hint of honey to this one and I liked that too. I did steep this a little too long and needed to add one cube of sugar to it…but that’s it. Yum!
Ha ha – he sounds like my BF ;-)
Glad to know I’m not alone in this!
My mom and dad always say it taste like tea (that means Lipton to them). My wife says, “does it have caffeine?” “yes” Then I’m not trying it. sigh. Thank heaven for Steepster. At least there are nearly complete strangers who get it.
