drank Coquito by A Quarter to Tea
1433 tasting notes

I steeped this overnight in cold water and it’s fab. It reminds of David’s old Coco Lemon Thai, except this bai mu dan base is less inclined to become astringent, and the lemongrass is far more balanced and less “pissy.” It’s a smoother, creamier tea overall, with a subtle dash of tropical pineapple.

Also, the spices pair phenomenally well with a handful of snickerdoodles (the only thing better would be horchata). The cinnamon and cardamom are most noticeable; the peppercorn and cloves appear for me the end of the sip.

I’m drinking this along Eggnog Pound Cake tea again. I guess consuming an overload of cake tea is better than stuffing my face full of all the snickerdoodles that suddenly spawned all over the house (cookie infestation!). I don’t know what to do with all the cookies; rationing is clearly out of the question.

Both tea samples are out, so on to the high priority repurchase list they go.

It’s a pretty tea but I’m not sure it quite works for me. The flavours made me think of a nice Hot Toddy with rum, more than it did gingerbread pancakes. Maybe it needs something to make it more bready or cake-like?

I added brown sugar and it brought out.. more Hot Toddy. Maybe I should add a lemon slice next!

This is a winner. I may even love it more than actual eggnog.

For old fans of Butiki’s Creamy Eggnog, this is a more than adequate replacement. The main differences are this has a somewhat floral white tea base instead of a green, and it takes a backseat to the flavouring instead of being particularly noteworthy in it’s own right.

The smooth and creamy eggnog flavour is spot on, with even the odd hint of cake. I just need to remember not to double fist it with On Wisconsin Jade Oolong; that was possibly too much cake this morning (but so good that I secretly regret nothing)!

This tea is good people, Sil. Did you pick up a sample of this in your order?

Sil

nopers. it was gone, think it was a limited edition, but between a bunch of us we may have enough someday to get 4oz made.

Crowkettle

No, no! There’s more! D: Although it does seem like it should be seasonal tea.. (not complaining).

weird…totally wasn’t there when i looked…i’m losing my mind i guess. I’ll have to add it to the wishlist and check it out next order heh

Crowkettle

It definitely feels like there are teas that are missing or have moved from the limited edition section since I ordered on the site so you aren’t the only one :/

Refreshing and easy to drink. After my cup cooled I chugged this down pretty quick.

There seemed to be more sage in my last serving, but this tea still had a lovely balance between sweet, refreshing fruit and savoury, vegetal herb. While first and foremost grassy, the Kukicha base also adds an extra dimension of nutty, and creamy sweet, with faint peach note. The finish and aftertaste act like a palate cleanser.

Not sure I’d order this again soon, but it would make a nice addition to the summer tea cabinet.

Wow. The flavour profile hits me in all my weak spots. I still have some left and I already want so much more.

What we have here is a floral and buttery oolong paired with some considerable cream heft to form a delightfully floral and milk-sour cheesecake tea. There’s some cinnamon added, which I find shocking because it blends so seamlessly in the cheesecake notes (natural and added).

I’m actually surprised how well this blend, well, blends together! Almost everytime I’ve come across a flavoured green oolong (more than one note) the flavouring and tea either act like oil and water, or the tea feels thin. This doesn’t feel thin at all.

Anyways, I hope this holds up well to repeated exposure (because this is a sure repurchase).

The subsequent steeps are more subdued in the dessert tea department. When the the second steep cooled the cinnamon was brought out a lot.

Sipdown!

There were exactly zero fruit and star anise pieces today, which seems to have made exactly zero of a difference to this tea’s great flavour. Maybe it’s more chocolatey and peppery than usual, but that’s hardly a bad thing! It reminds me of a hot chocolate croissant.

I still haven’t formed a complete opinion, but I’ll definitely come back to this one at a later date.

Maybe it’s because I steeped it in the same cup that I had my Sticky Rice Oolong hours ago, but today this is coming across with the full force of almond shortbread. It literally tastes like a biscuit you’d eat along side tea.

The first time I made this up the jasmine was stronger. The pecans and green base also combined in a way that enforced a marine/seaweed note. I steeped a pot up twice last time, so I clearly liked it, but I love it this time. My mother loves it too, which is a big success!

Oh, finicky flavoured green teas- you make rating and reordering difficult.

Pure goodness in a cup. This tea is the sole reason I placed an order with What-Cha in the first place; It’s amazing when I can pick up my old Butiki favourites elsewhere!

People have written some awesome notes on this tea already, so I won’t go into too much detail here. This tea has a stimulating mix of sweet (honey, caramel, lemon) and savoury (malt, sourdough, sweet potatoes). It’s pretty special and I totally recommend it to people, especially those who think white tea is a one trick pony. The Rhino has some surprising black tea characteristics.

This is probably one of the nicest peach teas I’ve ever had; I’m a big fan of the actual fruit but peach flavouring tends to fall flat with me. The Yunnan black tea base is cocoa-like with a peppery nip, and pairs interestingly with the peach flavouring and the star anise.

It’s a really soothing cup, and I wish I could channel some of that to my parents, who are in month three of home renovations and at wit’s end. The worker messed up badly with the tile laying in their en-suite shower (and won’t own up to it). Now they are looking at having someone else redo it, which is incredibly depressing and frustrating.

The nightmare of paying someone gazillions of dollars to invade your house for months on end and do their job poorly. Yep.

Crowkettle

That unfortunately sums it up :/

Kittenna

This is definitely one of the best peach teas I’ve had. Not only is the peach delicious, the base is flavourful too. Mmmm.

We’re looking at some heavy-duty renos in the near future… it’s scary to hear stories like that, but it happens far too often. Sympathies to your parents :(

Crowkettle

The base is lovely. I possibly loved the second steep more, which is novel for a flavoured tea! :)

Thanks. I hope your future reno goes nothing like my parents’ situation. I know it can be a challenge even in the best of circumstances.

Profile

Bio

I started my Steepster loose leaf adventure back in 2012. I can’t say I’m completely new anymore, but I still view oolong as a magical, extraterrestrial creature that unfurls in water.

My favourites are teas like Milk Oolong, Silver Needle, and Japanese Sencha/Gyokuro, or fruity and floral flavoured ones. However, I generally enjoy ALL the teas, including a good old cup of Earl Grey or Breakfast blend.

Less Preferred Flavours/Ingredients:

Subjective Rating System:
I don’t give a lot of low ratings out, since a) I tend to grab tea I know will appeal to me, and b) I don’t have a lot of strong dislikes.

90-100: Favourites. The Desert Island Teas.
80-89: Loved teas. Possibly staple-worthy.
70-79: Good teas, but I’m less likely to repurchase. Minor quibbles.
60-69: Ok teas. Likely a few preference and/or quality issues.
50-59: Cup of meh. Will do in a pinch.
11-49: Varying levels of undrinkable tea.
1-10: Nightmare tea from the chaos realms. This tea is the embodiment of the primordial swamp, an unholy abomination. It’s very gross and I’m almost positive it doesn’t exist.
