1443 Tasting Notes

This tea does not disappoint. The combination of Laoshan Black, cacao, and toasted rice is brilliant. I’m on my second steep and it really is malty and delicious, with a natural sweetness that pulls it all together. Truly a comforting tea.

I’m on my first resteep now and the flavour really holds.

drank Maple Pecan Oolong by Butiki Teas

After so many flavoured teas that didn’t really work out yesterday, this tea is such a relief this morning. Each day that goes by in my life with tea, I’m finding more and more often I reach for unflavoured or in this case, as naturally flavoured as possible.

Last time I had this I decided that the next time, my last cups worth, I’d pick out the pecans to see if it worked better for me, and YAY, it did! I don’t know that I’ve ever altered a tea like that haha, but in this case I really do prefer it. I’m quite sensitive to sweet anything and perhaps the pecans along with everything else here just put this one out of my sweet enjoyable range. I am so thrilled I can enjoy this tea sans pecans though :)

And this is a sipdown.

I’ve also been leaning more toward unflavored/naturally flavored teas lately. I think drinking a lot of different kinds of teas has helped me appreciate the subtleties in flavor rather than artificial or candy-like flavors.

Courtney

Yes exactly! I have very few artificial teas that I like at this point, and I’m appreciating more and more the same subtleties in flavour, especially recently in straight black teas.

drank White Chocolate Frost by DAVIDsTEA
1443 tasting notes

This was the newest seasonal tea I was most excited about, and it is pretty tasty.

The main flavour is overwhelmingly mint, which is fine and dandy. There is a hint of spiciness, which I’m guessing is the peppercorns, and underlying the mint is a creaminess for the white chocolate. The chocolate taste doesn’t come through very strong, it more just contributes to the creaminess. There is definitely an inherent sweetness to this tea all on it’s own.

It’s refreshing with all the mint, and I can see why this is a winter/Christmas tea for sure.

The mint and creaminess came out even more as it cooled, and the resteep is still tasty! More mint than creaminess for the resteep but I’m enjoying it nonetheless.

I want to try this one and Gingerbread the most I think!

Courtney

Hah I asked the guy helping me today, and those were his favourites!

This again is similar to David’s Toasted Walnut, and by similar, I mean essentially the same haha. Although I believe this one is ever so slightly less expensive. The walnut, almond, and green tea is a lovely combination, especially with the added sweetness of the brittle and pineapple. This tea doesn’t need anything to sweeten it up, and it’s nice to find a green tea base with flavours that clearly shine through, but don’t completely overpower the tea.

Toasted Walnut was always one I meant to go and get refilled, but never ended up doing. I’m definitely happy I ordered this one.

drank Toasty Almond by Tealish
1443 tasting notes

Okay so I sometimes get a little overexcited in my tea ordering rampages and should’ve realized this is Tealish’s version of Forever Nuts by David’s. I enjoy Forever Nuts, but it didn’t ever make my cupboard permanently.

Perhaps Toasty Almond will make the cut :)

This is a lovely herbal. The combination of baked apple, almonds, and a hint of cinnamon is quite comforting. It’s unlike many other herbals in that it feels slightly more substantial. I’m not quite sure that’s the correct way of wording it, but until my mind works out something more suitable, that’s what we’ll go with. Perhaps it’s the almonds? I will enjoy this one the rare times I’m not trying to caffeinate myself as of late, to get the least amount of sleep humanly possible.

drank Bella Berry by Tealish

I generally do not enjoy fruit teas with a black base. The ones I’ve tried just seem to be at odds between the fruit(s) and the base, but alas, this tea is quite tasty.

I threw this in my order just because. It had melon, which is always so tempting. The melon is right there, beneath the surface, and I’m getting a hint of strawberry. The strawberry and melon work great together. There is a hint of an artificial taste, and usually this would be a deal-breaker, it’s not overly offensive in this tea at all. I am quite happy I threw this one in on a whim. Perhaps there’s hope for black teas with fruit after all.

drank Maple Pecan Oolong by Butiki Teas
1443 tasting notes

I so want to love this tea! The tea itself truly is a masterpiece, and I know everyone else adores it, but I can’t seem to get completely on board. It really is creamy and delicious, and the maple sweetness is so lovely, but the pecans just aren’t quite doing it for me.

I’ve tried it multiple times now, and I’m just waiting on my second steep from today to cool now. I have a couple cups worth left and I think perhaps next time I have the urge to brew some up, I will measure it out sans pecans to see if it works better for me.

drank Oriental Beauty by Butiki Teas

This is a nice oolong. It’s smooth and ultimately relaxing. I am getting a touch of a mineral taste, but nothing offensive by any means. I can smell the honey notes more than I can taste them, but nonetheless, I am enjoying my cup. Hopefully a few resteeps to come over the rest of the afternoon.

I ordered so many oolongs from Butiki in my most recent order, and they are all delicious in their own way, but I’ve secretly been comparing them to Gui Fei, and I think that will always be my oolong. It’s just so unique.

Thanks Kittena for parting with some of this :) I think perhaps there was more than a cups worth by a wee bit, but I just told myself it was one cups worth and used it all haha. Possibly overleaf.

I can see why the cinnamon, cloves, and raisins are mentioned in the description. This is a truly tasty tea. It is malty and definitely a smooth sip. Overleaf or not, I’m quite happy with this one. I find Caramel Vanilla Assam is hit or miss with me. Some days I absolutely love it and other days I’m not so crazy about it – I haven’t figured out what I’m doing to make it amazing or not amazing, but this one is definitely on the amazing scale.

Two assignments down today! One quiz, one assignment, one lab report, and a few chapters of reading left to do. It would be so easy to devolve into stress, but I have tea and life is good.

drank Mi Xian Black by Butiki Teas
1443 tasting notes

I just brewed this up and I’m now clutching my mug as I read through an article on environmental health I have to write a response to. The scent of straight black teas are always comforting to me. I’m not always in the mood for them, but when I am they are so comforting – however I often find the natural honey sweetness gets a bit much about 3/4 way through my cup.

This is such a great straight black tea though. From the first sip, I already love it. I am savouring each and every sip. I need to remember to do that with each and every cup of tea, lately I’ve been so busy everything in my life seems like it’s flying by. There does seem to be very subtle hints of peach-like flavour in the background of this tea – I could almost be imagining it.

I can see how it’s similar to my favourite Gui Fei oolong for sure. Yum.

I’m gonna put on my nerd hat and ask what the environmental health article was about :P
And I agree with savoring tea. It can get hard when taking tea on the go, too.

Courtney

I’m such a nerd too! It was in a study done on pregnant mice exposed to chemicals and how it effects not only the pregnant mouse, but also their offspring, and their offspring’s offspring – and how the same thing can happen to humans. Transgenerational chemical effects.

I really try to savour my teas the rare moments I’m home now since I practically live at school haha!

Profile

Bio

I love black tea and this is usually what’s in my mug. I’m also happy to enjoy a cup of green or red rooibos (green preferable to red), herbals, oolongs (unroasted/green and red preferable to roasted), whites, and subtly flavoured greens (mango or pineapple, yum!).

Likes:
Raspberry, strawberry, peach, rhubarb, passionfruit, blackcurrant, redcurrant, fig, and most fruits in general, maple, creaminess, hay, biscuit, lavender, and cacao/dark chocolate.

I enjoy bergamot when paired with flavours that mellow it (Camellia Sinensis Earl Grey Cream is one of my favourites).

Dislikes:
Any smokiness at all, stevia, too much blackberry leaf, rose, jasmine, ginger (except in chai), cinnamon-heavy teas, anything cloying or fake/candy-like.

I’m vegan with an allergy to potatoes, so I avoid any animal products in tea, along with sprinkles as these often have potato starch (I usually just pick them out of blends).
