52teas 12 Teas of Christmas 2023 – Day 4

YASSSSSS! I love genmaicha and marshmallow treats and candy cane teas, so this is good on so many levels ha ha.

Roasty toasty and smooth genmaicha base with a touch of creaminess and a refreshing peppermint twist! As usual for these type of blends, I don’t really get marshmallow treat per se, but the inspiration is still there.

Still loving it as a candy cane genmaicha with a hint of cream! :D

Flavors: Brown Rice, Candy Cane, Creamy, Dry Grass, Fresh, Grain, Hay, Peppermint, Roasted, Smooth, Sweet, Toasted Rice, Toasty, Vanilla

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML

DIY Kyoto Obubu Advent Calendar – Day 15

Just yum. This is actually less intense than I was expecting – it’s so fresh and green. It’s like newly sprouted grass poking out of the ground in the spring. So mellow and sweet, and light yet full of flavor. The texture is silky and viscous, but not too heavy on the tongue. Light, creamy vegetal notes bring to mind edamame and freshly shelled peas.

It’s just… The essence of all things light green. Freshly sprouted tea! :)

Flavors: Clean, Creamy, Fresh, Garden Peas, Grass, Green, Kabocha, Light, Savory, Silky, Smooth, Soybean, Spinach, Sweet, Umami, Vegetal, Viscous

Preparation

Compagnie & Co Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 15

Just a classic Moroccan mint style tea – gunpowder with mint leaves.

Really enjoying it tonight though, there’s a nice balance between the earthy, mineral, and slightly toasty green tea and the light and cool mint. It’s a really good choice for winding down on the couch in the evening. :)

Flavors: Earthy, Fresh, Mineral, Mint, Peppermint, Smooth, Sweet, Toasty

Tea at the White House Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 15

This is much nicer than I expected. I actually get a distinct blackberry note, which is rare for me. Usually blackberry teas taste more generic IMO, but this one is bringing back memories of my grandma’s blackberry cobbler. The maple adds a nice sweet note and rounds everything out, but the blackberry is the star.

Flavors: Berry, Blackberry, Brown Sugar, Maple, Sweet, Tannic, Tart

Thésaurus Tea Fandom Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 15

Caramel and pineapple puerh? Okay then.

Unfortunately, I mostly just taste the chamomile. Not sure why there even is chamomile in this, honestly. Something is reminding me of coconut as well, I guess it must be the caramel combining with something else? I don’t really get pineapple, and I certainly don’t taste the puerh.

I don’t mind chamomile, so it’s not bad, it’s just nothing like the description.

Flavors: Butter, Chamomile, Coconut, Floral, Honey, Pollen, Smooth

Preparation

Sipology Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 15

So many coffee teas in this advent! Not that I mind ha ha.

This one is on a puerh base, so it’s very deep and rich. Doesn’t particularly taste like a macchiato to me, more just like plain coffee with a hint of sweetness and a dash of cinnamon. Dark and toasty but still very smooth.

It’s nice! Wouldn’t go out of my way to get it, but I’ve been spoiled by Old Barrel when it comes to coffee teas… :P

Flavors: Cinnamon, Coffee, Earthy, Roasted, Smooth, Sweet, Toasty, Woody

Preparation

Bird & Blend Matcha Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 15

Ooooh, another of their newer matcha that I’ve been wanting to try!

This one is lovely. The blackcurrant is the stronger of the two flavors, giving that classic syrupy dark berry sort of taste. Then the apple helps to lift the flavor a bit, and similar to the pear matcha, it’s quite crisp and refreshing.

Really nice pairing, and another one I would consider buying. It’s just that their matcha is quite pricey compared to my usual (3 Leaf) and I tend to fall out of the habit of drinking matcha quite often, and I wouldn’t want it to go to waste… :P

Flavors: Apple, Berry, Bitter, Black Currant, Candy, Crisp, Fruity, Grassy, Sweet, Syrupy

Preparation
Iced 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

drank Earl Grey Cheesecake by 52teas
3986 tasting notes

52teas 12 Teas of Christmas 2023 – Day 3

This is nice, very similar to a cream Earl Grey. A nice strong, classic black tea base with a high-quality bergamot flavor and a swirl of custardy creaminess. I have a creamy Earl Grey from JusTea that also tastes very rich and custardy, so this is reminding me of that tea. The base is almost a bit too brisk for my tastes, but I also steeped it fairly strong and it’s been cooling for a while, so I’m sure that brought out those qualities.

It does taste like Earl Grey mixed with cheesecake to me, so definitely on point given the name! I’ll have to try it with milk and sugar next time.

Flavors: Acidic, Astringent, Bergamot, Brisk, Citrus, Creamy, Custard, Malty, Sweet, Tannic

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

52Teas 12 Teas of Christmas 2023 – Day 2

What an interesting combination! Sort of like gingerbread meets figgy pudding.

However, I’m kind of missing the cookie part of the gingerbread? Mostly I just taste ginger, and it’s not overwhelming or anything, in fact it’s quite mellow, but I’m wishing for those sweet molasses-y notes. I do get just a touch of fig, but I would love more of it.

So to me, it’s sort of a subtly figgy, but mostly gingery-earthy honeybush. I am enjoying it as a relaxing evening blend, but not what I expected from the name. As I keep sipping it, I am getting a tongue-tingling sensation from the ginger as well.

Flavors: Earthy, Fig, Ginger, Pepper, Smooth, Woody

Preparation

DIY Kyoto Obubu Advent Calendar – Day 14

Yassssssss! Who needs genmaicha when you can have just the genmai? :P

So delicious. Toasty, nutty, buttery, so satisfying… Reminds me of a cross between popcorn and brown rice, with such a nice balance of rich nuttiness and cozy roasty notes.

Perfect evening tea… :D

Flavors: Brown Rice, Butter, Cashew, Grain, Nuts, Nutty, Popcorn, Rice, Rich, Roasted, Roasted Nuts, Savory, Sweet, Toasty

Hi, I’m Cameron! I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, KBeauty, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
