drank Honeydew Green by Tea Drop

Well, this is odd. Despite being called “Honeydew Green”, this tea has apricot flavoring and only has honeydew pieces, which I seriously doubt contribute anything to the flavor.

Mostly it tastes like a strong and somewhat astringent green tea with a subtle apricot flavor that I would assume was natural if I didn’t know better. It actually reminds me of a Lu An Gua Pian green tea that I had earlier, with the same astringency and somewhat harsh flavor, and obvious apricot notes.

It’s not bad, but the name is really misleading ha ha, and it’s certainly nothing special. I would say it needs more apricot flavoring at a minimum.

Okay, so I already know I don’t like this one, but I received a one-cup sample in a swap, so here we are.

It’s not awful or anything, it just tastes very artificial to me. Not really like pecan specifically either. I get sweetness, cinnamon, nuts, and artificial-tasting flavoring. I don’t really taste much of the base.

Luckily it was only enough for an 8-ounce cup, hooray! \o/

I can pretty much say without a doubt that this won’t be for me, given the strong chocolate flavoring smell, but we’ll give it a try!

Hmm… Well, it’s actually more almond and hazelnut than chocolate, which is nice. The nut flavor has a nice buttery quality and very much reminds me of roasted almonds.

However, there is definitely chocolate flavoring, of which I am not a fan, and also it’s a bit too sweet from the brittle pieces. A shame, because that roasted nut flavor is quite nice!

(I’m going to leave off a rating just because my aversion to chocolate flavoring really does ruin this for me…)

Holy crap Batman, this tea has such a high rating!

I’m not saying it’s bad, in fact it’s quite delicious. I love jasmine pearls, and these are undoubtedly high quality. I’m just surprised by the average of 89!

Anyway, the tea is light and fragrant with a nice sweet and natural jasmine flavor. Smooth and almost creamy, like other fine jasmine pearls I’ve tried. There’s a lingering sweet and nectarous floral finish.

Like I said, very good! I don’t have any Teavivre jasmine pearls handy, but it would be fun to compare. That being said, this tea is priced higher than even the most expensive grade of jasmine pearl from Teavivre, and I can’t imagine it being worth that much…

Flavors: Floral, Jasmine, Milk, Nectar, Peach, Smooth, Spring Water, Sweet

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 3 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML

Nice to see you’re adding new flavor descriptors to the menu! Spring water, savory, I remember seeing a few others.

Ha ha yeah, every time I want one that isn’t there and seems reasonable, I add it. I guess we should make a thread for suggestions or something… I’m sure there are a few you wish were available too!

drank Earl Grey Crème by Three 6 Tea

Sipdown! (46 | 250)

Earl Grey Crème always reminds me of Courtney now, because she loves it so much.
Hi Courtney! (waves)

This is pleasant enough. It has a nice balance of bergamot and vanilla, though the flavoring overall is perhaps a touch heavy for my tastes. The vanilla tastes fairly natural and a touch creamy. It’s hard to taste much from the base because of the strong flavoring.

Added a touch of milk to the second half of the cup, since I just wasn’t feeling the strong bergamot right after lunch. Plus it was a good excuse to use one of my oft-neglected tiny creamer jugs. :3

So this isn’t a tea I would personally order, as I’m not a lover of strong bergamot. But it seems a perfectly nice Earl Grey Crème for those who prefer their Earl Grey strong.

Flavors: Bergamot, Creamy, Perfume, Smooth, Sweet, Vanilla

So I had a tea yesterday that tasted a bit like rancid coconut even though there was no coconut involved, and I’m wondering if this tea was to blame. The dry leaf has a bit of an off coconut smell to it.

I will say I’m not detecting it as much in the taste. But overall, the taste is very light here. It’s subtle hay and oat notes from the white tea, and then a bit of creamy coconut. I do get a bit of a rancid taste in some sips, but it’s not like it’s making me gag or anything.

A pity, this one sounded like it would be interesting, but I’m not going to drink rancid coconut, ha ha…

More swap samples!

I’m honestly not a fan of Peeps in the first place, but I do like marshmallows, so this should be interesting.

It actually does taste like peeps – sugary with a bit of marshmallow. Maybe a hint of fruit as well? But mostly it’s just sugary and sweet because of all the sugar I saw in the leaf.

It’s not awful, but too sweet for me.

“An Ode to Tea” Alphabet Challenge – V

This was part of my S&V order late last year, but I haven’t gotten around to trying it yet. Today’s the day!

I admit, I’m not expecting much after seeing the other notes for this tea. But it’s honestly not bad. I do taste bubblegum, as tea-sipper mentioned, but I have that issue often with Dammann’s orange teas as well. I don’t really get vanilla, and only a little orange. Mostly it’s a strong jasmine green tea with some bubblegum.

Not exactly good, but not awful either. I’ve been spoiled by Teavivre’s lush jasmine teas, so this pales quite a bit in comparison. That being said, the jasmine is okay, it doesn’t taste like perfume or anything. But I am happy that I only have one ounce to sip through!

Flavors: Bubblegum, Candy, Floral, Jasmine, Orange, Sweet

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML
tea-sipper

I’m glad you didn’t hate this anyway! I probably lowered expectations with my tasting note. And yeah, it’s hard not to think of Teavivre jasmine teas when I drink any jasmine tea now.

Cameron B.

I really need to order some of their pearls but every time I look at them, I can’t decide which one to get! XD

tea-sipper

My opinion, the superfine pearls are hardly different from the premium. Both are very great.

drank Hot Jam Brownie by T2

Sipdown! (43 | 247)

Another flavored black tea from T2. Given my general dislike for chocolate flavoring, I’m not hopeful…

Bleck, this tastes a bit soapy, almost like coconut that’s gone off. But there’s no coconut in the blend, so not sure what’s giving me that impression.

In any case, nope!

ETA: Turns out the rancid coconut taste was flavor contamination from another tea!

Flavors: Artificial, Chocolate

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML

But whhaaatt the heck is a hot jam brownie though. Whatever it is, I want one. haha

Cameron B.

I don’t know if it’s a real thing or not, most of the Google results were for this tea, ha ha. But we’ll make it real!

tea-sipper

Well, I had leftover brownie so I just tried some COLD raspberry jam on top and of course that was good. Very sugary though.

Continuing with swap samples today!

Wasn’t sure what to expect from this one, but apparently it’s supposed to be oats, cinnamon, and caramel. I do get a bit of sweet cinnamon and perhaps a bit of grainy flavor from the oats. I also taste the cacao shells.

Overall it’s just a bit muddled and comes out being just okay. I’ve had a similar experience with a lot of T2’s teas…

Bio

Hi, I’m Cameron! I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, KBeauty, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
