Compagnie & Co Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 14

This is a sort of salted caramel oolong, though technically I assume it’s inspired by the sablé Breton (since it’s named for Bretagne). But it’s similar to other salted caramel oolongs I’ve had, like the one from Dammann.

It’s very smooth, and the oolong is somewhat oxidized which gives it a nice toasty vibe. The flavoring is somewhat subtle, though I do taste the butteriness and brown sugar notes. Very pleasant as an evening tea, but these caramel oolongs never seem to taste as good as I expect them to, given the name. :P

Thésaurus Tea Fandom Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 14

This is pleasant. Mostly rooibos, but I do get a bit of the maple in there as well. Thésaurus seems to really like fennel, as it’s been in several blends (as well as butterfly pea flower), but I don’t actually taste it here. I don’t taste the cardamom either.

But actually enjoying it, just as a mellow maple rooibos. :)

Flavors: Brown Sugar, Maple, Rooibos, Sweet, Woody

Sipology Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 14

Okay, so this one is just straight-up horrible.

It tastes like a pile of chemicals, and there’s a cloying mouth-coating sweetness coming from somewhere. I don’t understand where since there’s no stevia or monkfruit or licorice root listed…

The beginning of the sip is apple, and from then on I feel like I’m drinking nail polish remover. Definitely one of the worst teas I’ve ever had… :X

Flavors: Apple, Artificial, Chemical, Cinnamon, Sweet

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

Bird & Blend Matcha Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 14

Scrumptious! This one is quite strong on the flavoring, but wonderful as an iced oat latte. Getting equals parts sweet-tart raspberry jam and rich, creamy vanilla. It makes me think of a cream puff with crème pâtissière and raspberry sauce. I do notice a bit more bitterness from the matcha than usual for some reason…

Anyway, loved it! Would consider picking some up, though I find their prices painful since I’m used to 3 Leaf… :P

Flavors: Bitter, Creamy, Custard, Fruity, Grassy, Jam, Raspberry, Rich, Sweet, Tart, Vanilla

Preparation
Iced 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

Tea at the White House Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 14

This is a pleasant enough tea. Very mellow but sweet lemon flavor mixed with more herbaceous lemongrass. The black base is smooth and inoffensive, but lacks a bit of flavor.

Certainly not a lemony enough tea to be called limoncello, in my opinion. It’s more of a soft lemon fluff sort of flavor.

Flavors: Candy, Dry Grass, Hay, Herbaceous, Lemon, Lemongrass, Smooth, Sweet, Thin

Compagnie & Co Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 13

Fruity rooibos and I don’t generally get along, but this wasn’t terrible. I would’ve preferred it without the red fruits, because they make it lean slightly medicinal, and I like the mandarin more. There is a slight bubblegum quality to it.

Drinkable, but not a favorite.

Flavors: Bubblegum, Candy, Cherry, Citrus, Fruity, Medicinal, Orange, Red Fruits, Rooibos, Sweet, Woody

DIY Kyoto Obubu Advent Calendar – Day 13

Hojicha redemption! :P

This is just wonderful, so deep and toasty and yet so smooth. Definitely a bit of charcoal mineral note and a soft smokiness going on, in the best possible way. Gently sweet and savory at the same time.

Just nom nom nom!

Flavors: Charcoal, Earthy, Mineral, Roasted, Savory, Smoke, Smooth, Sweet, Toasty, Woody

Thésaurus Tea Fandom Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 13

This is so blue. I feel a little I’m drinking mouthwash ha ha…

Otherwise, it’s a cardamom oolong. Neither of those flavors are super duper strong, but I wouldn’t call them weak either. It’s a very mellow oolong, just smooth and slightly green, but not overly floral. And then the cardamom is also mellow, probably because I think there was one single pod in my sample.

They do go quite well together, but it’s a bit of a disconnect with the blue color for me. There are also blueberries in here, which I don’t taste at all, and I wish I did. Blueberry and cardamom would be nice!

Flavors: Cardamom, Savory, Silky, Smooth, Spring Water, Sweet

Preparation
190 °F / 87 °C 3 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 6 OZ / 177 ML

52teas 12 Teas of Christmas 2023 – Day 1

Cranberrrrrry! I was so excited to see this right out of the gate, I’ve heard great things about 52teas’s cranberry teas in the past and especially in the advent.

So I opened the pouch and smelled a lot of cinnamon, and I admit, my excitement deflated a bit ha ha. And to be honest… I’m finding this quite bland? Mostly I taste the black tea base, which is flavorful and smooth, but not really the point. I can tell that it’s flavored, but I don’t think I would be able to tell what the flavoring was supposed to be if I didn’t already know. There’s a bit of creaminess, and a bit of cinnamon. A hint of fruitiness perhaps, but I think I would guess plum before cranberry? Maybe just because the spice makes me think of plum? So to my tastebuds, it’s almost more of a spiced plum sort of tea, but overall the flavoring is very mild.

So, sadly, not quite what I was hoping for given the name.

Flavors: Cinnamon, Creamy, Earthy, Fruity, Plum, Smooth, Sweet, Woody

Tea at the White House Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 13

Well this was a surprise coming from this advent!

I admit I’m a bit of a hojicha snob these days, but this was still good. Basic run-of-the-mill hojicha with a lot of grassiness and not much nuance, but still so cozy for a rainy day like today. Definitely more sharp than some of the hojicha I’ve become accustomed to though.

Bio

Hi, I’m Cameron! I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, KBeauty, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
