Somewhat a disappointment. The leaves are broken into pretty small pieces. the fragrance is muted, with flowers, tropical fruit, malt and earth in it. The taste is really underwhelming and weak, with some sweetness, floral notes, cacao, and mushrooms.

I expect my keemuns to be more bold and defined. There are much better ones in that price range, including other keemuns by Teavivre as well.

drank Nilgiri by Dominion Tea
226 tasting notes

I am still on the lookout for a good Nilgiri after the three quite unremarkable ones that I previously tried. This one from Dominion Tea is the first Nilgiri that at least has some character and interest.

It has large attractive leaves with a pleasant smell when dry. The tea itself is also aromatic with earth, flower and tropical fruit notes. The taste largely mirrors the aroma with some unavoidable Assamica bite. The aroma and taste hold well after several steepings. Overall, not a bad tea for someone who digs Indian teas (which I am mostly not).

The appearance and aroma are very impressive. The taste is not particularly remarkable though. A rather generic green that is easy to turn bitter.

Flavors: Butter, Grass, Spices, Umami

The tea has a rich aroma (there is a lot of going on, including mineral, earth, flowers, and apricot) and a very nice colored liquor. The taste is complex although not intense. The aftertaste is long and pleasant. It is a very nice oolong indeed.

A very good oolong: a great aroma and the color in a cup. It resteeps well. I am going to make it my go-to milk oolong.

Flavors: Milk, Raspberry, Vegetal

(Appearance) Nicely pressed into a heart-shape. The tuocha falls apart in the cup fast and easily. (Aroma) Strong smell of rice and mushrooms.

(Taste) A very nice blend of rice, mushrooms and earth. It can be re-steeped many times without any appreciable loss in flavor, which is very consistent. Overall it is a very comforting and relaxing tea (if not the most complex), one of my favorites for winding down. Will certainly buy again…and again… and again.

drank Lychee Black Tea by Teavivre

Aromatic tea with a cozy, homey taste. It re-steeps well. Lychee tea is one of the best flavored teas in my opinion, on par with jasmine and rose petals. Will order again.

The dry leaves are visually pleasing: they are large and gnarly. The smell is sweet -reminiscent of the field of wild flowers in the spring – and spicy.

The liquor is very fragrant: fall leaves, burned leaves, spices, sandal wood, honey. The smell is quite distinct and uplifting.

The taste is mild but complex. There is some woodiness and sourness, plus malt, floral and honey notes and lots of other, harder to identify things. It also has a lingering and pleasant aftertaste.

It was a sampler and I will certainly order it again and in larger quantity. A keeper.

Not a bad Keemun but quite unremarkable. The aroma is so-so, the sour notes predominate in the taste. Upton has much better Keemuns that cost just a bit more, such as China Keemun Mao Feng or Hao -Ya B Superfine Keemun. Will not buy again.

I like to drink teas to recreate a specific mood, or just to take a break at work. The world of tea is so endless, patiently waiting for exploration and rewarding you in many ways big and small.

I am looking forward to years of playing with tea leaves, gaiwans, cups, and YouTube videos.

My ratings:

90 or more – a very good/excellent tea, I can see myself ordering it again.

80-89 – it is a good tea, I enjoyed it but not enough to reorder.

70-79 – an OK, drinkable tea but there are certainly much better options even in the same class/type.

60-69 – this tea has such major flaws that you have to force yourself to finish what you ordered.

<60 – truly horrible teas that must be avoided at all costs.
