drank Organic The Skinny by DAVIDsTEA
162 tasting notes

I got this tea way back in 2008 and I finally just finished the tea now. S’what happens when things get “organized” in the pantry, I guess. You knew where everything was, then BOOM. Complete disorganization that is masquerading as organization. Ugh.

So. This tea isn’t gross. It’s not good, but it’s not gross. I think I probably liked it significantly more back in 2008 and even 2009, but I can’t say I’m disappointed it’s gone.

The pu’erh gives off a slight fishy-smell, but less than a straight pu’erh would. The ginseng in it always reminds me of the taste of bacon…no idea why. But a fresh cup of this tea always reminds me of bacon. I can taste the citrus a little at the beginning; it starts to become more obvious as the tea cools slightly.

It’s OK. I won’t be refilling the tin with The Skinny.

drank Pink Passionfruit by DAVIDsTEA
162 tasting notes

I saw this tea during the pre-launch preview but it was sold out before I could buy one of those fancy cardboard container-thingers. So I had to wait FOUR WHOLE DAYS to be able to buy as much as I wanted. So I bought some! And faaaaaaaaaaaantastic. Sour like a true passionfruit, but not so sour (i.e. hibiscus-y) that you want to cry and eat your own cheeks.

Not only is this tea good on its own, but it’s also wonderful with the DAVIDsTEA Organic Guayusa or a plain green tea (tried it with a gunpowder green and it wasn’t so good…too smoky from the green tea). Not only do I like this hot, I like it when I steep it then forget about it for an hour and realize it’s stone-cold. Yum. I’ve never tried cold-steeping with any tea since I’m an “instant gratification” type of gal.

drank Kokomo Green by DAVIDsTEA
162 tasting notes

I’m rarely disappointed with an “on the whim” tea purchase, but this is definitely one of them.

The smell is exactly what I expected. Step onto a tropical island, and whabam. Kokomo Green tea. The taste, however? I still can’t get over the bitterness. I tried steeping it for literally 60 seconds. Bitter. It was cheek-hurting. I don’t HATE this tea, but I certainly don’t like it. This could have been so good…but then something wrecks it. Is it the rose petals? I don’t taste them in the tea, I would even go out of my way to say they add nothing to the tea at all. I’m tempted to try picking all of the rose petals out of a scoop and see if it makes it better. Blargh.

Won’t be buying this again.

drank Mango Fruit Punch by DAVIDsTEA
162 tasting notes

I bought this as an attempt to replace last summer’s fruity watermelon tea. I love fruity teas that are just as good iced as they are hot, and thought this one would be the winner.

I’m disappointed, but not because of taste. This tea is darn good. It tastes exactly like juice, which is precisely what I wanted. The unfortunate part: because it’s solid mango, pineapple and orange chunks it weighs almost twice as much as other teas. That’s crazy! For that reason, it gets a lower rating. It saddens me to say it, but I won’t be buying this again (because it tastes so good). The quest for a fruity-watermelon tea replacer continues…

drank Merry Cranberry by DAVIDsTEA

So first complaint: HOLY CRANBERRY. I ordered 250 g of four different types of tea, and this one seemed like it only had half as much in the bag as the other three. That makes me sad. Bright side: I like cranberry.

Taste-wise: it’s pretty good! For the life of me I wouldn’t have been able to figure out this was a green tea if the package didn’t tell me. Tastes like cranberries, apples, cinnamon, and a little bit of an I-don’t-know-what kick (probably a combination of the blackberry leaves, star anise and mistletoe). Yum! Definitely does remind me of Christmas, although it would have to be a lot more cinnamon-y and pine-y to be truly Christmasy to me.

I’m not sure if I would buy it again only because the tea is so heavy; you don’t get much for what you pay for, and there are a lot of other lighter green teas I like just as well.

drank Chocolate Rocket by DAVIDsTEA

Chocolate and raspberries. One of my favourite combinations, and it’s a big winner in this tea with the almonds. It’s a little smoky, a LOT chocolatey, and a LOT raspberry-y. This tea makes me happy; I’m pretty sure it’s my favourite DAVIDsTEA tea ever. It’s a sweet tea, but not like candy: the taste of chocolate isn’t like a chocolate bar. It’s more like dark bitter chocolate but the bitterness is balanced by the sweetness of the raspberry. A great, great combination.

drank Rose Congou Green by DAVIDsTEA

I’m sorry, but I just can’t do it. I thought I was really going to like this, I really wanted to like this, but I just couldn’t finish the cup. It literally tasted like I had walked into a rose garden and started eating everything in sight. Yuck. If there was some more “stuff” in it other than just rose-flavoured pieces I would have definitely liked it more. I’m not put off by the taste of rose, it was just SO MUCH ROSE.

I might try mixing this with something weird I have in my drawer like Forever Nuts or some Gunpowder Green. Maybe it will turn drink-able. The BF, who thought his mom would like it, is also not a fan for the same reason. Too much rose.

Another one from my most recent purchase from DAVIDsTEA. I was hoping to get a sort-of-substitute of Mom’s Apple Pie (which to my dismay was discontinued earlier this year) and I’m pleased to say I’ve sort-of-found-it.

This is an apple-y green tea with hints of other “stuff”. I don’t get much pistachio flavour, but the nuts themselves do add an oil-like texture to the tea. Doesn’t sound very appetizing when I put it that way, but I like it. It adds richness. The rose petals definitely add a rosy flavour which I like in moderation and this one doesn’t overdo it. It doesn’t have cinnamon in it to make me think of apple pie, but it’s almost exactly what I was looking for. I’m satisfied.

drank Indian Summer by DAVIDsTEA

Just got this tea because DAVIDsTEA was having a sale for like the first time ever. Got 250g of it despite never having tried it, hoping for the best based on previous reviews (I figured I like fruity teas, I like cherry, I like watermelon, I like apple, I like sweet, what could go wrong?)

Well, pleased to say this tea lived up to my expectations. I opened the bag and it smells a bit like a grocery store was put in a food dehydrator and then dumped in the bag. There are SO MANY ingredients it’s hard to believe the tea would be any good. But it is. I can’t taste the carrot, I can’t taste the lemongrass, I can’t taste the fig, I can’t taste the pumpkin, and I can’t taste the hibiscus (but it does turn the tea a lovely shade of pink). The watermelon is what pops out first, then followed by a strong cherry flavour (in this spoonful there happened to be a whole cherry, so I’m not surprised). The apple is there, but subdued.

I personally really like this tea. I can see how others might not, but it’s good. If this is just a sale and not an inventory clear-out for these teas never to return, I’d definitely buy it again.

I bought this tea in my local grocery store for $0.99/100g. Yep, really that cheap. So how does it taste for the price?

In my opinion, pretty darn good. I wouldn’t say it’s THE BEST green tea I’ve had, because it’s certainly not. It has a bit of a bitter after-taste no matter how long you steep it, and has a bit of strange colour after steeping. It has a bit of a “mouthy” feel while drinking that’s hard to describe. But for 99 cents? You can’t beat it.

I like to mix this tea with some dried fruit (or even fruit-based teas) to give it a bit of a flavour-kick. Dried apple and mango are especially good. The smoky flavour of the tea is nicely balanced by the sweetness of the fruit. I don’t put sweetner in it whether it’s straight or mixed with fruit.

I love tea. And I don’t mean like “I like to drink tea in the mornings”. I mean, I LOVE TEA. I also have an intense love for spreading the news that plants and fungi are the coolest groups of organisms on Earth. If you’d like to learn why I think so, you should visit my blog.
